KENYA COASTAL KENYA PROGRAMME WWF Kenya

About WWF-Kenya WWF is one of the world s largest and most experienced independent conservation organizations, with over 5 million supporters and a global network active in more than 100 countries. WWF s mission is to stop the degradation of the planet s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature, by conserving the world s biological diversity, ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable, and promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption. Locally, we are ensuring a healthy natural environment supporting growth in Kenya. WWF-Kenya WWF-Kenya WWF-Kenya

Overview WWF Kenya s Coastal Kenya Programme (CKP) was unveiled in September of 2011 within the Coastal East Africa priority place. The programme addresses sustainable natural resource management and biodiversity conservation in three Coastal Kenyan counties Kwale, Kilifi and Lamu. Parts of Tana River and Garissa counties are also covered to address challenges and opportunities at ecosystem level. The key areas of focus are marine and forest resources and the communities that depend on them. The programme aims to address threats to the integrity of Kenya s coastal natural resources (NRs) such as agriculture, infrastructure development, mining and climate change. The programme s area of work has been based on a conservation action plan (FY13-16) that has until now been aligned to WWF s national, regional and global aspirations. The CKP is made up of terrestrial/forestry, marine and ESD projects at two priority land and seascapes (Kwale and Lamu- Tana and other tertiary sites). There are three broad categories of projects under CKP: Marine: The marine work-stream is based at Mkokoni KWS camp and covers Lamu and Tana seascapes. It focuses mainly on conservation of key marine species (e.g. turtles) and sustainable fisheries management. Terrestrial: The terrestrial workstream is based at Kwale, Kilifi and Boni- Dodori landscapes. It addresses forests conservation and management including comanagement. It aims to promote sustainable forest resource management and associated livelihoods. Education for sustainable development (ESD): This is based at Lamu and covers both land and seascapes. It focuses on enhancing education for pupils/students, youth and their communities for sustainable natural resource management and environmental protection.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS Over the last 15 years that CKP has been existence, it has made significant achievements in a number of areas summarised below: Facilitating the establishment and management of protected areas, including gazettement and enlisting on recognisable levels such as World Heritage Sites (WHS) e.g. nine traditional forests (Kayas) which have now become WHS listed. Facilitating the establishment and operation of community-based conservation and natural resources management institutions (county forums and networks, CFAs, Beach Management Units BMUs). Supporting the development of innovative incentives for enhancing community participation in NRM (e.g. village community banks VICOBAS or Village Savings and Loans Associations - /VSLAs livelihoods projects). Contributing to policy development (tuna work, coral block mining work, forest management plans, integrated ecosystem management plans). Promoting restoration of degraded landscapes and seascapes.

OPPORTUNITIES IN COASTAL KENYA PROGRAM The Kenyan Coast is experiencing a boom in economic opportunities ranging from port (and associated infrastructural) development, extractives (mining oil and gas) and large- scale irrigational agriculture. These developments create new opportunities and demand a different way of working. While the approach in the past has been project based, scattered in different places without links, a landscape/seascape approach is now proposed, which for instance will see marine work expanding in scope from northern Kenya to the south Coast. The programme will still invest in traditional conservation work-streams but the major focus will now be on influencing large-scale infrastructure developments so as to minimise their adverse environmental and social impacts. Private sector engagement will be key and close collaboration with county governments is critical to support spatial planning among other policy investments.
