17 TH -18 TH MARCH, 2018 MIRANDA HOUSE UNIVERSITY OF DELHI 1

Greetings! We, at Miranda House (University of Delhi), are delighted to welcome your esteemed institution to the seventh edition of the Zenith Model United Nations on the 17th and 18th of March, Model United Nations is an educational simulation of United Nations and other intergovernmental bodies and committees where students engage in lively discourse regarding matters of global pertinence as world leaders. At Zenith, we seek to formulate pragmatic and detailed solutions to the concerns which plague the world and thus encourage students to grow as aware citizenry of the global community. Alongside the debates, we strongly support the development of skills such as reporting, photography and filmmaking which contribute greatly to the success of an event. In 2012, the Economics Society of Miranda House, organized its first edition of Zenith Model United Nations Conference as a part of its annual festival, called Zenith. Over the years, our conference has grown to witness greater participation and more challenging deliberations, making our event one of the most keenly anticipated conferences. 2

At Zenith MUN 2018, we hope to do even better and eagerly await your participation. We are extending an invite your institution to send a delegation to Zenith MUN 2018 where we plan to simulate five committees as well as the International Press. It would an exciting experience for the students and we look forward to a positive response. The relevant details of our conference are mentioned below. For any further queries, do get in touch with us at the contact details provided. We look forward to hosting your participation. Warm regards, The Secretariat,

COMMITTEES 1) UNITED NATIONS COMMISSION ON STATUS OF WOMEN CHAIRPERSON: SANKALP DIKSHIT VICE CHAIRPERSON: SAKSHI JUNEJA AGENDA: ADDRESSING GENDER STEREOTYPES IN THE MILITARY The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women and the flagship committee of Zenith. A functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), it was established by Council resolution 11(II). The CSW is instrumental in promoting women s rights, documenting the reality of women s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women. UN Women supports all aspects of the Commission s work. We also facilitate the participation of civil society representatives. 4

2) JOINT CRISIS COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON: RAHUL KRISHNA CHAIRPERSON: SIDDHANTH BAJAJ COMPETING CABINETS: AMERICAN CABINET AND RUSSIAN CABINET AGENDA: SHAYRAT CRUISE MISSILE SITUATION A Joint Crisis Committee is very different from the normal MUN experience, yet equals conventional simulations in complexity and challenge. JCC consists of two independently running subcommittees whose decisions and actions immediately affect the perpetual crisis at hand. JCC is about what your country needs and wants. One must embody the state, whether that is to be generous and open, or vicious and calculating, and to do what needs to be done. The delegates must compromise, negotiate, and persevere in a battle of diplomatic wit. 3) UNITED NATIONS ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL CHAIRPERSON: ANNA SINHA VICE CHAIRPERSON: AKHIL PURI AGENDA: RAISING THE ECONOMIC ASSIMILATIVE CAPACITIES OF NATIONS HOSTING REFUGEES, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON SKILL DEVELOPMENT The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It is responsible for coordinating the 5

economic, social, and related work of 15 UN specialised agencies, their functional commissions and five regional commissions. The ECOSOC has 54 members and serves as the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues. It also formulates policy recommendations addressed to member states and the United Nations system. At the centre of the United Nation s development efforts, it conducts cutting-edge analysis, agrees on global norms and furthers the cause of progress through sustainable means. 4) EUROPEAN UNION CHAIRPERSON: AAYUSH MOHANTY VICE CHAIRPERSON: NIKHIL GOYAL AGENDA: REVIEW OF EU-US TERRORIST FINANCE TRACKING PROGRAMME WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON SETTING UP OF EUROPEAN UNION TERRORIST FINANCE TRACKING SYSTEM With 28 member states, the European Union is political and economic of union of primarily European countries. Founded in 1993 in Netherlands, the European Union traces its origin the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and the European Economic Community (EEC) and is headquartered in Brussels. EU policies are guided towards ensuring the free movement of people, goods, services and capital within an internal market. It enacts legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintains common policies of trade, agriculture, fisheries and 6

regional development. In the recent past, it has contributed in the relief efforts to assuage the refugee crisis. 5. PARLIAMENTARY STANDING COMMITTEE ON EXTERNAL AFFAIRS MODERATOR: YASHDEEP CHAHAL AGENDA: CREATING LONG TERM POLICY FRAMEWORK FOR ONE BELT ONE ROAD (OBOR) INITIATIVE WITH RESPECT TO INDO-CHINA RELATIONS IN THE 21 ST CENTURY Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs comprises of not more than 45 members of which 30 are nominated from the Lok Sabha by the Speaker and 15 are nominated from the Rajya Sabha by the Chairman. This departmentally constituted standing committee endeavours to provide Parliamentary surveillance over administration concerning External Affairs. The committee is in a very privileged position to provide necessary direction, guidance and inputs for broad policy formulations pertaining to diplomatic relations, foreign administrative services among other related objectives, chief of which is the achievement of the long-term national perspective by the Executive. 7

AWARD POLICY 1. Committee-wise awards are awarded by the respective Executive Boards and their decision in this regard will be final. 2. There will also be a Best Delegation Award. This award will be decided as per the following rules: A delegation should consist of at least five members (excluding members of the International Press). A delegation will be awarded the following points: 5 points for Best Delegate 3 points for High Commendation 1 point for Special Mention In the spirit of fair play, we will also consider the win-participation ratio of each delegation. This is to ensure that all teams are judged on equivalent grounds and no team is at a disadvantage because they have fewer members than another team. In case of equality in win-participation ratios of two delegations, the Best Delegation Award will go to the delegation with the higher number of Best Delegate awards. 3. The International Press will be competitive, with awards for both reporters and photographers. However, points won by International Press members will not be added to the tally of their delegation. 8
