Online Course Urban Drainage and Sewerage September 2012 January 2013 Course coordinator: Solomon Seyoum, MSc
Course Objective The general objective of the course is to provide participants with an understanding of the basic principles and knowledge for the planning, design and construction of urban drainage and sewerage systems.
Learning Objective Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to: describe the inputs, outputs and functioning of urban drainage/sewerage systems; appraise urban drainage and sewerage management problems in urban areas; describe the standard practice in designing urban drainage systems and develop simple drainage system designs; explain the elements of an urban drainage/sewerage model; describe the elementary hydraulic/hydrological processes involved in the urban drainage systems and recommend their appropriate applications; construct a simple model for analysis of hydraulics of a drainage system; interpret simple model results and use them for decision making in design, renewal and upgrading systems.
Topics/Subject 1 - Introduction 1.1 First Day Survey 1.2 Introduction to Urban Drainage and Sewerage 1.3 Natural water cycle versus urban water cycle 1.4 What is urban drainage? 1.5 Effects of urbanisation and climate change on urban drainage Topics/Subjects Lecturer Solomon Seyoum, PhD fellow Solomon Seyoum, PhD fellow Assela Pathirana, PhD Solomon Seyoum, PhD fellow Assela Pathirana, PhD 2 - Types of urban drainage systems Solomon Seyoum, PhD fellow 3 - Urban hydrology SB Weerakoon, PhD 4 - Urban hydraulics SB Weerakoon, PhD 5 - Wet weather and dry weather flow characterisation 5.1 Wet weather flow characterisation 5.2 Dry weather flow characterisation Damir Brdjanovic, PhD Mogens Henze, PhD 6 - Data collection and processing for urban drainage management Zoran Vojinovic, PhD 7 - System components and Design Solomon Seyoum, PhD fellow 8 - Modelling Urban drainage Zoran Vojinovic, PhD Solomon Seyoum, PhD fellow Assela Pathirana, PhD 9 - Advanced topics in Urban Drainage Various 9.1 Sewer systems as a bioreactor 9.2 Asset management of urban drainage 9.3 Optimization in Urban Dranage 10 Case Studies Various
Expectations and grading Expectation Participants are expected to follow the on-line course schedule. Several assignments will be posted as a part of this on-line course. Assignments should be submitted by the deadline that will be clearly stated on each assignment in order to be graded. Assignments not submitted on time will not be graded and receive a mark = 0%. Participants are encouraged to ask/answer questions to/from their peers and the coordinator by using the e-campus platform of UNESCO-IHE ( All the course material will be posted using this e-campus system. Course Grade The final grade of this course is determined from: Activity Weight the average of several course assignments; Assignments 20% final project report; and final examination Final Project 30% A minimum average grade of 60% is Final Exam 50% required to pass the course and issue the certificate.
