Belle Vernon Area School District Science Curriculum Grade/Course: Grade 1 Science Unit: (Description) Life Science Unit A Plants Are Living Things 3.1 Unifying Theme 3.3 Biological Sciences Use their senses to make observations. Know the similarities and differences of living things. Describe basic needs of plants. Identify that plants have life cycles that include being born, developing into adults, and reproducing and eventually dying. Identify the basic parts of a plant and the function of each part. In what ways do living things vary? How do we describe the similarities and differences of living things on Earth? 1. Evolution of Life Over Time: Earth is home to a great variety of living things. 2. Cell Theory and Organisms: Living things are similar to and different from each other and nonliving things. On-going Remediation: CompassOdyssey On-Going Enrichment: CompassOdyssey

Grade/Course: Grade 1 Science Unit: (Description) Life Science Unit B Animals Are Living Things 3.3. Biological Sciences 3.4 Earth Sciences Animals have life cycles that include being born, developing into adults, and reproducing. Animals closely resemble their parents. Animals have external features that help them survive in different environments.(habitats) Animals are alike and different in many ways and have characteristic parts to classify them in groups. Animals need food, water, air, and shelter. 1. In what ways do living things vary? 2. How do we describe the similarities and differences of living things on Earth? Earth Systems Theory: The earth is constantly changing and operates in cycles. Organisms: Living things are similar to and different from each other and nonliving things. Grade/Course: Science Grade 1 Unit: (Description) Earth Science Unit C The Sky and Weather

Describe Earth s relationship to the Sun and the Moon. Explain that a group of stars form constellations. Identify the planets and discuss likes and differences. Identify basic weather conditions and how they are measured. Identify the four seasons and recognize the differences between seasons. 1. What are ways we can observe and describe changes in an object's motion and position? 2. What observations can we make that show the earth is constantly changing? 1. Earth Systems Theory: The earth is constantly changing and operates in cycles. 2. Force & Motion : Changes in an object's motion can be observed and described 3. Forms, Sources, Conversions, and Transfer of Energy: There are a variety of ways to make things move. Grade/Course: Science Grade 1 Unit: (Description) Earth Science Unit D Caring for the Earth 3.1. Unifying Themes 3.2. Inquiry and Design 3.3. Biological Sciences 3.7. Technological Devices 4.2 Renewable and Nonrenewable Resources 4.3 Environmental Health Identify the Earth s resources such as rocks, minerals, soil, water, oxygen, plants and animals. Understand how resources make a difference in our daily lives. Identify types of pollution and the effects of it on our lives. Explore and identify ways to reuse, recycle and reduce as ways to stop pollution and take care of the Earth s resources.

1. What are ways we can observe and describe the properties of objects and materials? 2. In what ways do living things vary? 3. What observations can we make that show the earth is constantly changing? 1. Earth Systems Theory: The earth is constantly changing and operates in cycles. Grade/Course: : Science Grade 1 Unit: (Description) Physical Science Unit E Matter, Matter, Everywhere 3,2 Inquiry and Design 3.4 Physical Science Identify matter Recognize basic concepts about the structure and properties of matter. Use simple tools to measure types of matter.

1.What are ways we can observe and describe the properties of objects and materials? Atomic Molecular Theory of Matter: Grade/Course: Science Grade 1 Unit: (Description) Physical Science Unit F On The move 3.4 Physical Science Explore different types of force and motion. Name and use position words to describe an objects position. Measure movement using a ruler. Explore the property of magnets and identify the ways people use them. Explain the relationship between sound and vibration. 1. What are ways we can observe and describe changes in an object's motion and position?

2. What are ways we can observe and describe the properties of objects and materials? 3. What is needed to make things go? 1. Atomic Molecular Theory of Matter: Objects can be described in terms of the materials they are made of and their observable and measurable properties 2. Forms, Sources, Conversions, and Transfer of Energy: There are a variety of ways to make things move. 3. Laws of Force & Motion: Changes in an object's motion can be observed and described.
