Water utilities There is a growing challenge in providing quality water to communities and serving the rapidly growing cities with efficient water supply, drainage and wastewater systems. The demands for improving and protecting the environment and human health conditions are also increasing. One of the major challenges in the 21st century is to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation. Experience has shown that process optimisation can add controllability and stability, decrease outlets and increase the capacity with payback times between one and two years. Freshwater is a precious resource. Providing high quality drinking water and efficient drainage and wastewater systems for the world s growing communities and cities is a formidable challenge. The impact on urban flooding, combined or separate sewer overflows, treatment processes and receiving waters are high priority issues worldwide. Both the scientific community and the United Nations anticipate resource efficiency for industrial production to increase by a factor of four corresponding to a doubling of production using half the present resource consumption in the coming 20 to 30 years. DHI contributes to industry by making the numerous and complex water-related challenges manageable from sewers to wastewater treatment plants and flood risk assessment. 4
Drinking water and distribution systems Decision support and urban water management Urban flood management Wastewater collection systems Water and wastewater treatment Weather radar and rainfall forecasting Climate change adaptation By combining DHI s knowledge of processes and advanced technology, the capacity of the various systems may be optimised and increased, energy consumption reduced and effluent quality improved. This is often accomplished without physical expansion of the plants and systems. 5
Industrial products and technology Enhanced productivity requires optimisation of production processes and improved management tools. This again requires a better understanding of the various mechanisms. A cleaner production with focus on improved and safe productivity may be achieved by utilising this knowledge. By developing solutions, tools and technology, which can support sustainable industrial development, environmentally friendly solutions may be promoted. Core competences include development and testing of new waste treatment technologies, water reuse, reuse and depositing of residuals and byproducts, management of chemicals and a wide range of laboratory services. The goal is to achieve economic growth and enhanced production with less impact on the environment and health and to ensure chemical compliance. REACH is changing the way chemicals are handled and documented in Europe. Today the entire supply chain must be able to document that products can be handled at low environmental and health risk. The future Global Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) from the UN will set new guidelines for the labelling of chemicals supporting the intention of REACH to protect both people and the environment. Likewise, the implementation of the Water Framework Directive has focused attention on the environment not least the fate of wastewater. 6
Clean production and water savings Treatment technologies Waste, soil and contamination Environmental impact assessment Exposure modelling and risk assessment of chemicals Chemical regulatory compliance Implementation of global harmonised system (GHS) on chemicals Software tools for management of chemicals By assisting technology suppliers and users in identifying the possibilities of process improvements and adaptations, cleaner and more efficient processes may be achieved, processes ranging from handling and management of chemicals to treatment of waste. This is reached by the expertise and facilities available at DHI. 7
Coastal and marine engineering Coasts are diverse dynamic morphological systems encompassing spectacular arrays of windswept beaches, tidal inlets, rocky coasts and coral reefs. Coasts contain a range of habitats. Their beauty and importance are second to none and are considered one of our favourite destinations. Coastal environments are transient, continuously reshaped by the natural processes of the waves, tides, surges, erosion and deposition. There is increasing pressure on our coasts from the competing needs of commercial, recreational and residential interests. Careful planning and comprehensive assessment is required to preserve these complex coastal dynamics and to safeguard our magnificent coasts for future generations. As global trade increases, more and more goods are handled by ports. This again increases the demand for enhanced operability and capacity. Planning, design and construction of ports and marine structures as well as any marine operation require a range of hydraulic and environmental engineering services and tools to ensure viable design, safe and efficient operation and minimal environmental impact. This also involves a number of disciplines ranging from surveying to shoreline management. At DHI our philosophy is to work with nature based on a thorough understanding and detailed analysis of the various processes. DHI provides the required combination of expertise and an integral suite of inhouse tools such as surveying and monitoring, numerical modelling and hydraulic model testing. This is what provides the clients with the optimal solutions to often complex problems. Better and more efficient results can be achieved by working with nature instead of against it. That is our design philosophy. 8
The combination of know-how, advanced data sampling and modelling tools provides the design criteria. These criteria form the basis for making the right decisions founded on operability and economic viability. Metocean data Marine and coastal structures Sediment transport and morphology Shoreline management Spill management Environmental impact assessment Surveys and monitoring Climate change adaptation Waterfront developments 9
Transport and energy production A combined effect of globalisation, increased energy demand and improved wealth require increasingly more goods to be transported over long distances. Many of these goods are transported by sea, including oil and liquefied natural gas. To accommodate both more and larger vessels new ports and terminals are being built, and existing facilities and navigation channels are being expanded. The primary source of energy is fossil fuel. To meet the increased demand, exploration and production of fossil fuels move into both deeper waters and more sensitive areas such as the arctic. Environmental awareness and the fact that fossil fuels are limited resources have intensified the development of sustainable energy sources. Similar to conventional offshore structures, offshore wind farms, tidal power and wave energy converters need to be designed to withstand the often rather harsh environmental conditions. At DHI we offer a wide range of services for the transportation and energy production sector. We assist with optimisation of port layout, operational optimisation of hydropower plants and predict the energy production from renewable energy sources. Activities also cover the determination of loads and response of offshore structures and pipelines. The services provided by DHI combine inhouse expertise and state-of-the-art technologies, which include advanced numerical models and physical modelling often supported by hydrographic, biological and chemical field surveys. 10
Metocean data Offshore technology Renewable energy LNG facilities Marine pipelines and outfalls Ports and terminals Marine and hydraulic structures Navigation channels Water and energy forecasting Considerable savings may be obtained by establishing the correct design conditions and by optimising the design based on these. This is why we combine physical and numerical modelling approaches with field data and achieve innovative and cost-effective solutions. 11
Agriculture and aquaculture The demand for food supplies increases and so does the pressure on natural reserves. The challenge lies in improving the efficiency of production while, at the same time, reducing the environmental impact on land and at sea. Agriculture has a high impact on the environment. By adapting an innovative approach the load on the land can be reduced, thus minimising the impact on the groundwater. The production cycle from seeding to harvest can be optimised by integrating precipitation predictions using, for instance, local weather radars and advanced prediction tools. thereby rendering the stock vulnerable. By addressing the ecological issues caused by, for instance, fodder residuals the overall load can be reduced. DHI has the knowledge and tools to optimise the production cycle and reduce the impact on the ambient environment. This ensures a cleaner and more sustainable production. Aquaculture plays an increasing role in the production of food as natural habitats become more and more exploited and natural stocks dwindle due to catch and prevailing changes. Traditional forms of production have a high ecological impact and diseases are common, 12
Strategic environmental assessment Environmental impact assessment Irrigation and drainage Scenario analysis Ecological forecasting Risk assessment Biological management Food safety By providing intelligent solutions the agricultural producer is able to optimise the production in context of environmental threats and planning permissions. The rapidly increasing demand for food takes its toll on the environment. By applying the right methodology and tools the load can be reduced and the production cycle optimised. 13
Rivers and reservoirs River floodplains and riparian areas are highly valued as they provide not only easy access to water, but also to transportation, food production, recreation and natural beauty with high levels of biological diversity. Managing rivers and floodplains must address the growing pressure caused by development. This includes water-related disasters such as floods and droughts, sustainable water supply, protection and remediation of water quality, management of river sediments and soil erosion, river restoration as well as protection of riparian habitats. Water shortage, water pollution and flood impacts are among the most urgent problems in river management. Also the number of flood disasters worldwide has increased significantly in recent years. While this may partly be due to a changing climate, the additional utilisation of flood plains and a reduction in the natural retention capacity of catchments play a significant role. Dams and reservoirs contribute significantly to the management of water, which is becoming a scarce resource. Dams and reservoirs ensure water for power and irrigation, and are used to mitigate the potentially devastating effects of floods and droughts. At the same time they may have adverse environmental and social impacts. There is therefore an increasing demand for detailed and accurate assessments of the environmental impacts and for the efficient operation of existing dams to minimise the adverse effects while maximising the benefits. DHI s services are tailored to clients needs and can assist rivers and reservoir managers faced with complex decisions in meeting these demands both in real time and for planning purposes. 14
Optimising the usage of water for hydropower has a direct impact on the bottom line. The payback time for an optimisation project is typically less than a year. Weather radar and rainfall forecasting Forecasting and warning systems Optimisation of reservoirs, dams and hydraulic structures Flood management River sediment transport and morphology Inland waterways Environmental impact assessment In numerous cases DHI s extensive experience of hydrology, water resources management, hydraulics, river morphology and environmental expertise has contributed to maximising the positive effects of reservoirs by offering: optimal and safe designs, sustainable sedimentation and water quality management, reliable inflow forecasting, optimised and balanced reservoir operation and flood protection strategies as well as water quality and sedimentation surveys. 15
Water and environmental management Solving water and environmental problems often requires integration of various aspects such as conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water, water quantity and quality, irrigation water demand, water use conflicts, environmental and socioeconomic aspects, and integration of the natural systems into political and institutional systems. The particular advantage to our customers is cutting-edge expertise coupled with state-of the-art decision support tools to assist in the policy analysis and strategic planning of water and environmental resources. DHI has achieved a leading position within the field of integrated management of land and water resources. Furthermore, we have contributed to defining IWRM approaches and pioneered their application through support to national planning processes. Moreover, we host a number of international knowledge centres run in cooperation with UNEP, WHO, Danish Water Forum and Global Water Partnership dedicated to working towards integrated management of water, environmental and coastal resources. 16
A sound understanding of the prevailing conditions and the likely impact of man-made structures is vital when deciding which approach to take. This also ensures that the consequences and benefits of the chosen solution are quantified. Expertise combined with modelling tools and laboratory facilities provides the basis for the right solution. 18 Environment, health and safety Requirements to environmental, health and safety aspects of chemicals are placed on products brought to market. Professional documentation of safety, consumer information, sustainability and animal welfare are requirements set and met by market leaders and authorities. Manufacturers are required to document that their substances or products can be used safely and therefore require assistance to meet the legislative obligations. Planning and design of laboratory tests, or use of alternative methods, may be necessary to achieve the documentation. Market leaders are focused on implementing sustainability, carbon foot prints, consumer information and performance in their product policies. The food industry likewise recognises that food safety assessments need to be incorporated at an earlier stage in the product development. Authorities require assistance with regard to the impact of chemicals and on technical assessments or practical guidance in relation to implementation of new legislation. We advise on safety assessment of chemical substances and raw materials as well as on the implementation of the EU REACH regulation on chemicals. Marketing advice on chemical products and alternative solutions is provided. Preparation of product information and documentation is part of our services. We provide the medical sector with advisory services to product developers, researchers and scientists, companies and authorities. At DHI we are specialists in safety assessments of chemicals, waste streams and drinking water, and we apply new methods which do not involve animal testing. Save time and money by adopting an efficient approach to regulatory requirements, documentation of safety and planning of laboratory tests. 18

Policy In a world where limited resources are increasingly stressed, good water governance is more than ever crucial for sustainable development. Ecosystems are under threat, health risks appear as a consequence of decreasing water quality and climate changes add to the threats to the sustainability of the world's water resources and thus also to the livelihoods of the increasing populations. The DHI Water Policy unit assists governments and institutions to address these issues. Improved governance, integrated water resources and coastal zone management are key methods. Partnership is an efficient vehicle to provide the assistance. Assistance covers areas such as diagnostic water resources assessments, institutional analyses, policy dialogues and formulation, legislation and overall sector reforms. Stakeholder involvement is a key element in the various processes. The institutional reforms, which are implemented, are followed up by human resource development and capacity building, assessments of impacts following monitoring and reviews of reform implementation. DHI Water Policy strives to be a trusted partner providing advice covering the full range from the policy and strategy level to action plan implementation. Our experts assist worldwide with management and planning frameworks for water resources, coastal and environmental resources and the associated problems and issues. DHI Water Policy further acts as advisory centre for Global Water Partnership, Collaborating Centre for United Nations Environment Programme, Collaborating Centre for World Health Organisation and hosts the Danish Water Forum. 20
