1 Energy Production Lesson 2 - Advantages and Disadvantages of Energy Production Curriculum Expectations Courses: SNC1P/SNC1D Learning Goals PHV.03 analyse the practical uses of electricity and its impact on everyday life PH3.03 compare electrical energy production technologies, including risks and benefits (e.g., explain the advantages and disadvantages of using hydro, photovoltaic, wind, and tidal generators to produce electrical energy) PHV.03 evaluate the social, economic, and environmental costs and benefits arising from the methods of electrical energy production used in Canada PH1.13 compare methods of producing electrical energy, including their advantages and disadvantages (e.g., voltaic cells; primary and secondary cells; photoelectric cells and thermocouples; hydro-electric and fossil-fuelled power; wind, and tidal power) At the end of this lesson, students will know, understand, and/or be able to identify advantages and disadvantages of the various methods of producing electricity. Instructional Components and Context Readiness Prior to this lesson, students will have an awareness: of common methods of producing electricity (e.g., wind, solar, coal, nuclear, etc) that they will need to write and pass an OSSLT Test next year to graduate from high school Terminology Electrical energy production Materials 1. Computer with internet access 2. OSSLT Reading Assignment (Handout # 1) one per student 3. OSSLT Reading Assignment answer key one for teacher Resources Kruger Products Wins Coveted CIPEC Leadership Award for Innovative Biomass Gasification Technology, 10.pdf OSSLT Item-Specific Rubric and Sample Student Responses with Annotations, Minds On (25 minutes) Individually & Pairs Think-Pair-Share using preferred multiple intelligence Connections Assessment for Learning Individually, students brainstorm the topic of the various energy production techniques that they have learned in previous year (e.g., coal, nuclear, wind, solar, etc.). Students pair up and share their ideas with each other. Together, the pair comes up with the energy production that they found most interesting and chooses any format to describe what they already know about this information to the class (flow chart, journal entry, song, comic strip, etc.). Circulate and provide feedback as appropriate, guiding the pairs so that as many energy production methods as possible are chosen. Share and discuss the learning goals. STAO
2 Action! (30 minutes) Individually OSSLT Practice, Reading Individually, students will complete the OSSLT Practice Style Reading Assignment. Assessment as Learning The reading, Kruger Products Wins Coveted CIPEC Leadership Award for Innovative Biomass Gasification Technology, can be found on Kruger Products Sustainability 2015 website at As required in the actual OSSLT Test, students will need to follow the strict instructions listed on the student answer sheet to complete the task properly. This activity should be taken up as an entire class to ensure that all the students are capable of completing a similar assignment during the actual OSSLT Test. This activity can also be used to provide further feedback and possibly identify students who are atrisk for the OSSLT Test. Consolidation (20 minutes) Whole Class Discussion Facilitate a discussion about characteristics that make for a desirable and undesirable method of energy production. Point out that coal power plants have been closed down over the past few years in Ontario, and Kruger Products Biomass Gasification is winning awards. Assessment of Learning On the board in front of the class make a list of the advantages and disadvantages (social, economical, and environmental) for each of the energy production methods talked about in class. Provide feedback where appropriate. STAO
