2 The role of the IAEA The IAEA is widely known as the world's "Atoms for Peace" organization within the United Nations family. Established in 1957 as the world's centre for cooperation in the nuclear field, the Agency works with its Member States - and multiple partners worldwide - to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies As at May 2015, 164 Member States.

4 Decommissioning Statistics At present, 155 power reactors shut-down for decommissioning worldwide: ü 17 fully dismantled, ü about 50 in process of being dismantled, ü about 60 being kept in safe enclosure mode, ü 3 power reactors were entombed, and ü the rest do not yet have specified decommissioning strategies. In addition... more than 400 research reactors & other nuclear facilities have been decommissioned or are in progress or are developing strategies.

6 IAEA Decommissioning Support IAEA provides and coordinates decommissioning support for its Member States through: ü Development of thematically focused safety and technical publications, ü Maintaining and expanding a professional network dedicated to Decommissioning, ü Implementation of regional and national technical cooperation projects, ü Organization of variety of experts events, workshops and training courses, ü Provision of peer review services etc. 6

7 Technical Publications ü More than 60 publications (NE Series reports, Technical Series reports, Safety standards, Safety reports, TECDOCs etc.) have been published by the IAEA since the 1980s, in the field of decommissioning; ü Some of them are in common between decommissioning, remediation and waste management, some of them were prepared in cooperation with other organizations, e.g. NEA OECD, EU; ü The most recent relevant technical publications are as follows:

13 International Decommissioning Network (IDN) ü A professional network to increase visibility and to leverage learning from national and regional decommissioning projects & existing networks. ü Objectives: To provide increased opportunities for practical decommissioning hands on and user-oriented experience, To facilitate sharing of knowledge and experience, To raise awareness of need and encourage decision-makers to move forward with decommissioning project implementation, To attract additional resources to the field and accelerate the pace of decommissioning activities worldwide. ü A joint initiative of the IAEA's Departments of Technical Cooperation, Nuclear Energy, Nuclear Safety & Security. 18 ARTEMIS ü The Review Service for managing radioactive waste and spent fuel, control of discharges, decommissioning and remediation. ü Objective is to provide independent expert opinion and advice on : radioactive waste and spent fuel management, assessment of radiological impacts to people and the environment, management of residues arising from uranium production, decommissioning and remediation issues. ü Based upon the IAEA safety standards and technical guidance, as well as international good practice. ü Of particular relevance in support of the Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management Directive (Council Directive 2011/70/Euratom of 19 July 2011) ü Cross-cutting coordinated activity of NE and NS Departments
