How to achieve more with less? Enabling energy efficiency and resource saving, Blue Competence in practice Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen
1. What means blue competence and which focus has the initiative? 2. Examples from textile machinery industry and blue competence members 3. Best practice of textile industry: How to be successful? How to combine sustainability and profit in the right way? Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 2
Blue Competence The sustainability initiative of VDMA Initiative for sustainable solutions of the machinery and construction sector across the entire spectrum of industrial applications Distinguishes those companies that have aligned their development and production to the principle of sustainability Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 3
Management standards and process criteria for Blue Competence Machine-based logos and classification of textile machines into energy efficiency classes analogous to the consumer goods industry are no solution from a professional perspective Blue Competence therefore defines management criteria and process standards. They apply to all alliance members taking part in the initiative. The result is made visible. But: the user of machines, in our case the textile producer, directly affects the specific energy use in many ways Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 4
1. What means blue competence and which focus has the initiative? 2. Examples from textile machinery industry and blue competence members 3. Best practice of textile industry: How to be successful? How to combine sustainability and profit in the right way? Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 5
German Technology: Higher Energy Efficiency - Higher Profits German Technology is globally leading with regard to highly efficient productivity and outstanding quality. High productivity is the most efficient way to save energy. Energy-efficient Processes From Fibre to the Final Textile Product Roland Berger Strategy awarded best ratings to the German textile technology for the increase of energy efficiency. About 15 per cent higher efficiency until 2020 are foreseen. Today - already higher savings along the overall process chain are possible. Latest German technology increases profits by higher efficiency and reliability in production. Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 6
Energy efficient machine for knitted cotton T-shirts Distribution of the energy consumption in the production with VDMA machines VDMA T-shirt spinning preparation 6,7% yarn production 32,3% finishing 58,4% Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 7 textile fabric manufacturing 2,6% Öko-study 2002 VDMA 2002 (without clothing & cotton production) )
What have cotton T-shirts to do with power plants? 28 per cent less energy consumption for production of cotton T-shirts German technology reduced 28 per cent of energy consumption for the production of jersey fabric during the past ten years. The saving effects applied to the production of one T- shirt per year for each of the 7 billion inhabitants of the earth are enormous: If the worldwide production of cotton T-shirts was made completely on German state-of-the-art technology, the output of two coal power stations in Beijing with a total gross power of 1000 megawatt (1GW) could be saved every year! Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 8
Functional T-shirt Energy savings could feed 200 million notebooks Optimised energy consumption - Production of functional T-shirts by about 1/3 more favourable German technology of model year 2013 consumes 30 per cent less energy than the predecessor machines and components ten years ago. Translated to 125 million functional T-shirts produced per year worldwide this means: Overall energy saved for the process steps [yarn manufacturing over warp-knitting up to finishing] sum up to 23.5 billion watts per year (23 GWh). This equals to the same energy necessary to power 200 million notebooks during one working day. Only one prerequisite: All T-shirts will have to be produced with German state-of-the-art textile technology. Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 9
The bigger textile billboards get, the more energy matters 26 per cent less energy for the production of textile billboards Warp-knitted fabric used for outdoors advertising of roundabout 400,000 tons produced worldwide throughout one year would be sufficient to transform the overall metropolis of Guangzhou into a giant textile billboard. If German machinery technology of latest generation was used exclusively for the production of these textile advertising media this is the result: Possible enormous energy savings for each individual process step, sum up to 26 per cent. Equivalent to 300 billion watt hours (300 GWh) per year This equals the daily output of the world s biggest hydroelectric power station at the Three Gorges Dam in the Yangtze River! Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 10
1. what means blue competence and which focus has the initiative? 2. examples from textile machinery industry and blue competence members 3. best practice of textile industry: how to be successful? how to combine sustainability and profit in the right way? Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 11

The BRÜCKNER Group excerpt of product portfolio Coating line for woven and knitted fabric Relaxation dryer Compressive shrinking machine Stenter for woven and knitted fabric Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 13
1. Invest in the most efficient technology on the market 2. Invest in heat recovery 3. Use minimum application techniques 4. Technical & technological training program for operators 5. Evaluate the complete plant Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 14
ENERGY SAVING = SUSTAINABLE ACTION the first step to increase your profit Important for increasing your sustainability Our joint duty for saving valuable resources! Blue sign conference 2015, St. Gallen 15
