3 LOWTHERM 4G The future of warm mix asphalt There are several warm mix technologies available in the marketplace, but they all suffer from the same problem cost. The producer of the warm mix asphalt spends more money on additives than they save from reduced energy costs during manufacture. LOWTHERM 4G is the first additive on the market that enables you not only to reduce your mixing temperatures by up to 50ªC with all of the consequent environmental and working benefits, but also immediately and considerably lower the production cost. Independent estimates suggest that a large producer of asphalt can save millions of pounds a year by using LOWTHERM 4G. Our highly advanced, 4th Generation additive is also completely safe to humans and the environment, which in todays health and safety focused industry, is a huge advantage over traditional chemical additives. 3
4 LOWTHERM 4G is a high technology liquid additive, which works at the microscopic interface between the bitumen and aggregate. It reduces the frictional forces at this interface, enabling the reduction of mixing temperatures by up to 50C. Our extensive laboratory testing has proven our product performance to be equal to or exceeding that of our major competitors. 5 LOWTHERM 4G was developed and tested in Italy. It has been trialled and used extensively in many countries worldwide. LOWTHERM 4G mixed at traditional HMA temperatures, gives you the ability to extend the range of the asphalt plants distribution radius by up to 200%, due to the advanced compaction properties of asphalt mixed with LOWTHERM 4G. LOWTHERM 4G features a proprietary adhesion agent, which aids the performance of the bitumen. This helps to prevent stripping and also stops residual water from lower heating temperatures and foamed bitumen interfering with the coating process. In fact, our laboratory tests have shown that where you use LowTherm 4G in conjunction with foamed bitumen, you get all of the benefits of reduced bitumen viscosity, improved coating performance and the ability to lower the mixing temperatures even further than with foam technology alone. LOWTHERM 4G removes the moisture from the aggregate and creates a strong, water resistant chemical bond with the bitumen. This chemical bond also helps to considerably improve pavement life. Commercial Benefits WMA (Warm Mix Asphalt) is typically produced at 30ªC lower than HMA. Using LOWTHERM 4G you can lower the temperature by up to 50ºC. This has a profound impact on the energy required to heat the aggregate in the mixing plant. Our experience has shown a reduction in energy costs of up to 50%*. This advantage, coupled with the low cost of LowTherm 4G compared to other leading brands, allows the asphalt producer to achieve a significant reduction of production costs. Independent estimates suggest that a large producer of asphalt can save millions of pounds a year by using LOWTHERM 4G. By using LOWTHERM 4G s advanced adhesion properties, up to 45% RAP content to the mixes can be incorporated, which offers a further commercial benefit to the producer. Please contact us to arrange a meeting where we can calculate the savings available to you on a plant-by-plant basis. *This can vary due to individual plant characteristics. 5
6 Production and Quality Benefits The use of LOWTHERM 4G in WMA significantly reduces the hardening of the bitumen during the mixing process. This leads to longer pavement life and increased flexibility of the bitumen. We have conducted a wheel tracking experiment in our laboratory on an InfraTest Hamburg wheel tracker in accordance with EN 12697/22 and we found that Stone Mastic Asphalt produced with LOWTHERM 4G offered better resistance to rutting than the control sample. Due to the way that LOWTHERM 4G helps to increase the compaction performance, it is possible to lay a much thicker layer of asphalt whilst still achieving the correct compaction density. This saves considerable time on emergency repairs. By mixing the asphalt at HMA temperatures and using LOWTHERM 4G, you can extend your haulage distance by up to 200%, knowing that your client can achieve the desired performance on site. Furthermore, adding LOWTHERM 4G to your mix can eliminate clumping and hardening of the product in overnight storage silos, enabling you to better manage your workload the following day and increase plant productivity. Smaller reinstatement crews will see an immediate benefit of the asphalt made with LOWTHERM 4G as it will enable them to use the asphalt for longer and achieve a much greater level of compaction using their plate compacters. One of the major factors in reinstatement failure is the lack of adequate compaction. Asphalt mixed with LOWTHERM 4G starts out at a lower temperature, it cools quicker, meaning you can open the site to traffic much sooner than with conventional HMA. This is especially critical on major trunk roads with expensive lane rental costs. LOWTHERM 4G improves the workability of the asphalt without modifying the physical properties of the binder; therefore, parameters such as viscosity, penetration and softening point, remain unchanged. 6
7 Environmental Benefits By mixing your asphalt at up to 50ºC lower than HMA, stack emissions are dramatically reduced. This is especially important for urban plants that operate in areas of high population density. Using LOWTHERM 4G can help reduce the following: СО2 Carbon dioxide reduction up to 50% CO Carbon monoxide reduction up to 30% SO2 Sulpur Dioxide reduction up to 35% VOC Volatile Organic Compounds reduction up to 50% NOx Nitrous Oxide reduction up to 70% Particulate release reduction up to 55% Using LOWTHERM 4G will give you the opportunity to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the produced asphalt. LOWTHERM 4G gives the applicant a distinct advantage when applying for tenders - the carbon footprint is being given increasing importance. Furthermore, LOWTHERM 4G is not classified as hazardous to the environment and is nearly entirely biodegradable. Health & Safety Lower mixing and paving temperatures minimise fume and odour emissions for the asphalt worker as well as create a cooler working environment. As a rule of thumb, reducing the temperature of the asphalt by 12ºC equates to a fume reduction of 50%. Temperature Reduction 12ºC 24ºC 36ºC 48ºC Fume Reduction 50% 75% 87.5% 93.75% As you can see from the table above, there is a significant improvement with regards to fume exposure for the asphalt worker when using LOWTHERM 4G. Our highly advanced chemical formula is vegetable based and is classed as non hazardous for human health. LOWTHERM 4G represents a breakthrough in WMA. Independent testing has shown that it is the first product on the market that combines all of the benefits of traditional WMA products with a commercial saving for the producer. Please contact us for more information or to arrange an appointment where we can discuss your requirements in more detail.
