Bioenergy Platform Review David Laird, Plank Leader
Key Accomplishments Agro-Eco Plank Established two Bioenergy Agro-Ecosystem Research (BAER) sites as outdoor laboratories in bioenergy agriculture. Soil Carbon Cycling and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Farmer Advisory Board Field Day at the Ames BAER site (2012).
Clear Creak Watershed (BAER) site EPSCoR is supporting: 2 weather stations, 2 Eddy Covariance systems, 13 Stream gages, 4 ISCO water samplers, 2 Nitratax sensors, 10 ground water monitoring wells, Hyperspectral camera and remotely piloted vehicle Clear Creek Watershed. Rain gauges Stream gauges Communities
Big Creek Watershed (BAER) site
Big Creak BAER site includes the Landscape Biomass Plots Landscape Position: Summit Shoulder Backslope Toeslope Floodplain Stream
Key Accomplishments Agro-Eco Plank Trained technicians and students to quantify carbon, nutrient, energy, and water fluxes associated with biomass production. Nicolas Boersma, research scientist at the Ames BAER site, samples sorghum plants. Fall, Credit: Danielle Wilson.
Key Accomplishments Agro-Eco Plank Used the BAER sites to develop capacity for scaling agro-ecosystem impact assessment to broader regional scales. Hyperspectral camera A-36 Bonanza Beechcraft Hypercube showing false color RGB and spectral radiance of edge pixels NIR Sensor Portion of Clear Creek shown as false color RGB (three bands of 64: approximately R1600, G1260, and B1000nm)
Key Accomplishments Conversion & Logistics Plank Trained students to use the thermochemical conversion pilot plants Laboratories established to analyze and characterize feedstock intermediates. Gasification laboratory at University of Iowa
Key Accomplishments Conversion & Logistics Plank Instrumentation purchased for a laser-based diagnostic laboratory to study fundamental phenomena of thermochemical processing. Optically Accessible Pyrolyzer at ISU 24 well plate analyzer for assessing microalgae or bacterium culture fermentation of pyrolytic bio-oil feedstocks.
Key Accomplishments Conversion & Logistics Plank Purchased nodes from an existing high performance computing system at ISU to support computational studies. Integrating experimental research and computational sciences through development of models of pyrolysis and gasification Developing open-source virtual engineering tools for the design and optimization of thermochemical systems.
Multiphase Chemically Reacting Flows High-performance computing clusters that are partially purchased using EPSCoR funds Key Accomplishments Conversion & Logistics Plank Open-source code has been developed and sample computational results of a fast pyrolysis reactor Song-Charng Kong, Mechanical Engineering
Assessment of Years 1 and 2 Strength: Focus on junior faculty has paid off they have been successful in securing external funding using enhanced research capabilities provided through EPSCoR funds Needs improvement: Integrating activities of the agro-eco and conversion & logistics planks Better collaboration with Cyberinfrastructure
Improve the BAER sites: develop hyper-spectral imagery data base implement data bases for carbon, water, nutrient, and GHG fluxes develop Agro-IBIS models parameterized the watersheds, and prepare large-scale, interplatform grant proposal. Write proposals! Plans for Year 3 Agro-Eco Plank
Plans for Year 3 Conversion & Logistics Plank Additional equipment for pilot plants Instrumentation to analyze biomass and biomass-derived products Hold workshop on integrating experimental and computations studies Release open source virtual engineering tools Launch new project in Cyberinfrastructure
