3 Trade Council Singapore: Energy, Clean Energy, Environment, Wastewater, Waste treatment. Singapore is the leading clean energy hub for the region, and clean energy solutions are developed, tested and exported from here. Singapore s early focus on cleantech has created valuable knowledge and know-how that can be disseminated to the rest of the region who look to Singapore for new solutions in these areas. Singapore's strategic location between the Indian and Pacific Oceans has made it a hub for refining, trading and logistics solutions for oil and gas. Singapore has a total crude refining capacity of about 1.4 million barrels per day and is capable of storing 1.47 million cubic metres of crude oil at present. In 2014 Singapore opened underground caverns to store liquefied natural gas. The oil industry accounts for 5 pct. of Singapore s GDP. Singapore s strategic position has made it one of the top three refining centres in the world and the potential is still growing. The marine and offshore industry in elaborated upon in a separate sector report. To address climate change challenges Singapore has become a strong industry player within the alternative energy sector. Cleantech was identified as a key economic growth area by the government as early as Today Singapore is the leading clean energy hub for the region - raising the bar for energy efficiency and developing new and sustainable technologies for the industry. Singapore s manufacturing know-how has proved to be a key consideration for the many leading clean energy companies who are leveraging Singapore as a regional base. The clean energy industry is expected to contribute $2.6 billion to Singapore s GDP in Singapore hosts a range of key wind technology players, including Vestas, the world s leading supplier of wind power solutions. Vestas opened its regional R&D Hub for Asia in Singapore in Embassy of Denmark, Singapore Page 3 of 5
4 Singapore is committed to developing its clean energy sector. Important growth areas include solar energy, wind energy, smart grids, green buildings and energy efficiency. Singapore is making significant investments in research and innovation around sustainability. Since 2011 more than S$800 million of new public sector R&D funding for energy, water, green buildings and addressing land scarcity has been announced. The investments have catalysed growth of innovation-driven clusters in Singapore. Singapore government plays a facilitating role in the development of environmental technology in Singapore. The Environment and Water Industry Programme Office (EWI) an interagency body led by the national water agency, and the Economic Development Board (EDB) - was set up in 2006 to steward the R&D funding and spearhead efforts to grow the industry. Singapore is a city with a modern environmental infrastructure and effective environmental management system. It has accumulated considerable experience and know-how in environmental management, protection and infrastructure. Singapore is building up its capabilities in research and development in environmental technology. Strategic options which Singapore offers to environmental technology companies include manufacturing/service operation; product and process development; regional training and distribution centre; procurement. Companies across the full value chain from innovation to test-bedding and commercialization of technologies are therefore present in Singapore. Companies in the wastewater and waste treatment dominate the industry. Some of these companies, especially those engaged in the construction of waste water treatment, have been very successful in the regional market. To safeguard Singapore against changing weather patterns, the government is investing in water infrastructure, also ahead of demand. Water demand in Singapore is currently about 400 million gallons a day - a figure which is set to double by Singapore is not yet self-sufficient in water supply. It is Singapore s goal to be totally self-sufficient in water resources by 2061, when Singapore s water supply agreement with Malaysia expires. Singapore is motivated to innovate and develop water management and water treatment technologies to overcome its dependence for water. Currently water supply can be divided into four sources; Water from local catchments Embassy of Denmark, Singapore Page 4 of 5
5 Imported water from Johor in Malaysia NEWater (recycled waste water) Desalinated water Singapore has been at the forefront of environmental innovation and was an early adopter of innovative solutions such as NEWater and the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System. By 2060 NEWater is projected to meet 50 pct. of Singapore s future water demand. Today, Singapore is recognised as a Global Hydrohub with about 130 water companies. These companies represent the entire value chain of the water industry, spanning from upstream component players (membrane and pumps manufacturers), equipment OEMs, and system integrators, to downstream EPC players and project developers. Companies are finding it beneficial to be able to collaborate with other players in the value chain, or adjacent industries, to produce new technologies and solutions. Several Danish companies have experience in products, services and technologies which ensures a lot of possibilities within Singapore s water sector. Danish companies could benefit from R&D initiatives, collaborations, production and/or regional headquarters to name a few options. To develop future-oriented solutions in meeting environment and water needs, Singapore has set up publically-funded research Centres of Excellence (CoE) at the Nanyang Technology University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS). In 2013, Lux Research ranked NUS and NTU the number 1 and 2 universities in the world respectively for water research. Singapore excelled particularly in the fields of membrane, water reuse and water desalination. With a growing emphasis on water and the environment worldwide, Singapore is well positioned to take global leadership as an innovator and provider of solutions in this industry. Singapore s market offers good opportunities for Danish companies with competitive and unique solutions to energy and environmental requirements. Danish companies can choose to be in Singapore on its own or collaborate with Singaporean business partners. Danish exporters of products, services and knowhow in environmental technology should be able to find suitable niches. Singapore is a good test-bed for new solutions and can also be used as a hub to manage business activities in Asia. Singapore is therefore an ideal springboard for environmental and water companies looking to serve the region. An innovative environment and water industry is flourishing in Singapore.
