2 2 The Future in Fine Dust Monitoring GRIMM Environmental Dust Monitors (EDMs) Particle size is an important factor influencing the dispersion and transport of dust in the atmosphere and the effects of dust on human health. Total Counts (TC) in the atmosphere determinates the change of particle concentration by the same mass concentration and is a good scale to understand the influence of the dispersion and transport of dust. PM0.1 refers to very small particles (ultrafine particles UFP), from a few nanometers up to 100 nm with a large part of elemental and organic carbon (EC/OC). Dust is a generic term used to describe fine particles that are suspended in the atmosphere. Dust comes from a wide variety of sources, including soil, vegetation (pollen and fungi), sea salt, fossil fuel combustion, burning of biomass, and industrial activities. These particles may undergo chemi cal changes and reactions with other substances. Fine particles are not visible to the human eye, although at high concentrations it may appear as a haze in the atmosphere. Finer particles are typically defined as particles of size PM10, PM2.5 or smaller. The typical characteristics include: Primary dust is directly emitted and is easily entrained by wind or turbulences and as smaller the particles are the longer time it takes to settle once airborne. Ultrafine particles (< 100 nm) therefore hardly ever settle on the ground. Secondary dust is mostly caused by some kind of combustion and coagulates together or breaks apart changing the size distribution over time. Gases that react in the atmosphere over time also form fine particles, sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen are converted photo chemically to ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, etc. These secondary formatted aerosols consist also of SVC (semi-volatile compounds) which are thermally not stable and disappear back to the gas phase at higher temperatures than ambient air. Dust is typically classified according as deposited matter. This refers to any dust that falls out of suspension in the atmosphere. These particles are generally classified by particle size, as follows: TSP (total suspended particles) refers to particles 50 μm (micrometers) in size or smaller. These fractions are: o PM10 refers to particles 10 μm (0.01 mm) in size or smaller at a 50 % efficiency. o PM2.5 refers to particles 2.5 μm ( mm) in size or smaller at a 50 % efficiency. o PM1 refers to particles 1 μm (0.001 mm) in size or smaller at a 50 % efficiency. o SVC (semi-volatile compounds) are always a part of the PM2.5 value particles suspended in the air. Advantages of the New EDM Technologies The first real-time dust monitors were developed in Germany in 1960 based on radioactive BETA-ray detection. This method is still used today, although newer methods be came available on the market (micro balances). Both methods had in common that only a significant mass could be monitored in minute averages. Since the requirements changed to smaller sizes (PM2.5 and finer), it became more difficult to monitor in real-time. Therefore a new optical method as spectrometer was developed by GRIMM enabling the measurement of the total size distribution in over 30 size channels, allowing the calculation of PM10, PM2.5, PM1 and TC values. Now all results are available continuously at the same time and measured with the same device. The new GRIMM EDM technology can fulfill all the PM requirements listed above and is available from a handheld device to a 19" rack solution for shelters. Finally it should be noted that this method does not need any radioactive material, has no moving parts and therefore needs little maintenance and does not need any consumables.

3 Instrument Concept of the GRIMM Environmental Dust Monitors PM10 + PM2.5 + PM1 + TC + Size Distribution with one Instrument 3 Technical Acceptance At present there are hundreds and hundreds of GRIMM instruments in use worldwide and their PM data are expressed in standards, such as GESYTEC or other protocols to match the different national environmental networks. Examples of the results are shown on page 6 and 7 (software). Scientists and environmental engineers can access the data from anywhere in the world via the WWW or any other data transfer system. In addition a fully automatic self-test and control system monitors the performance of the instrument and reports possible problems given at the same time together with the measurement data. All this results in a considerable reduction of the total cost of ownership! Sample Head The sample air inlet is based on the requirements established in the Johannesburg convention and simulates the inhaling behavior of human beings. Instead of using a cyclone, the total sample air and the total suspended matter (TSP) enter the radial symmetrical inlet at 1.25 m/s, protected by a grid (see picture). Size Classification Each single particle passing through the measurement cell is classified by size, and assigned to one of the 31 different size channels every 6 seconds. Based on this size and count distribution from 0.25 μm upwards to over 30 μm, the different channels are multiplied with special densities obtaining a proper mass distribution in 31 channels, allowing the calculation of PM10, PM2.5 and PM1. Maintenance Each device reports not only the different PM values, but also the instrument characteristics and instrument performance, so that preventative maintenance can be planned, even on remote stations. This reduces the field costs considerably and allows for better use of our instruments in the field. Notice that the instrument does not need any consumables. Sample Pipe The sample air passes through an isothermal air drying system during which moisture is extracted via a Nafion tube. This reduces the possibility of nucleonic condensation and therefore artificial growth/weight. The benefit of this method is that there is no loss of semi-volatile aerosols (SVC). See blue section in the diagram below. Measurement Cell From the sample pipe an automatic volume controlled air stream of 1.2 l/min passes through the heart of the patented GRIMM spectrometer cell that has been designed as a single particle detection optic measuring the scattered light at 90 for proper classification at low refractive index change. This results in every single particle being measured by the instrument. Then each signal is classified and counted. Approvals The mass distribution is now mathematically converted in accordance to the respective PM sampling head efficiency curve, so that all the different PM curves can be obtained within one instrument at the same time. This is all done automatically by the instrument. This patented solution was presented to the US EPA and the European Community for approval resulting in GRIMM s PM10 and PM2.5 approval, as well as TC correlation proof with CPC s. Further Expansion All GRIMM EDMs can be (at any later date) upgraded to measure in addition a) aerosol size distribution, b) the meteorological data (for modelling), and c) the semi-volatile contribution of each PM channel. For more details see under Accessories (page 5).

4 4 Product Family of GRIMM Environmental Dust Monitors PM10, PM2.5, PM1, as well as TC at the Same Time with the Same Instrument EDM 180 The 19" Rack Solution Page 11 This instrument is a 19" rack solution with the capability to measure simultaneously the different PM values in realtime (intervals from 6 s up to one hour possible), and is approved in the USA by EPA and by the European EN for PM10 and EN for PM2.5. Values for PM1 and TC (Total Counts) are also provided even though EN standards for these parameters have yet to be established. EDM and EDM 164 The Mobile Outdoor Dust Monitors Page 13 Smallest commercially available portable dust monitoring system with internal spectrometer EDM 107 (24 x 13 x 7 cm) evaluated in Germany by UMEG in It shows three PM values in real-time and stores the data on a removable data card or directly online on a PC. The EDM 107 is inside the weather protection housing 163 for continuous outdoor measurements in the field. The EDM 164 has the dust monitor contrary to the EDM as a fixed installation inside and is equipped with a large external sample pump. EDM 365 The Industrial Outdoor Device Page 14 This device sets a new trend: Instead of big measurement containers with cost-intensive maintenance requirements, the EDM 365 is small, stand-alone and compact while making no compromises regarding dust and meteorological demands. It can also be equipped with a semi-volatile compound sampling pipe (as shown in the picture). EDM 465 UFP-C The Road Traffic Monitor Page 15 This is a new development for continuous measurements of ultrafine particles (UFP) from 7 nm upwards at a high time resolution of 1 sec. which reflects well the atmospheric changes to particle concentrations on road sites, etc. This sophisticated device can also be upgraded with a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) inside, giving results in counts in 42 size channels expressing the aerosol size distribution from 7 to 350 nm. 11-E The Mini Bag Type of Handheld Spectrometer Page 12 This device is designed to work in the field. The new model 11-E features now also state-ofthe-art communication and data storage ports. Data can be stored on a SD-card and/or transferred via USB, Ethernet, RS-232 and even Bluetooth. Laptops, PCs and Tablets can now wirelessly control the dust monitor. EDM 665 The Wide Range Aerosol Spectrometer Page 16 The flagship of the GRIMM Environmental product line is the Wide Range Aerosol Spectrometer monitoring system. This unique combination of optical and electrical mobility particle sizing technologies ideally supports environmental research in an extremely wide range of average particle diameters from a few nm to over 30 µm. 5 Specification of GRIMM Environmental Dust Monitors General Depending on the application there are different EDM models available from GRIMM. As shown in the overview on the left side, all instruments measure with the same optical measurement cell to assure inter-compatibility, but have different handling and operational concepts. They have in common: the 31 size channels range from 0.25 to 32 μm, the automatically controlled sample flow of 1.2 l/min, data storage card and data access at the RS-232 at all times, and meteorological sensor for temperature and humidity. EDM 765 The Mini Container Combination Page 17 The EDM 765 is a complete standalone compact environmental shelter permitting the use of the EDM 180 in combination with up to three different EPA approved 19" rack gas sensors and meteorological sensors. The system is on wheels, selfcontrolled, air-conditioned and all data are logged and transmitted wirelessly to the central data system. 6 6 Software for GRIMM Environmental Dust Monitors PM10 + PM2.5 + PM1 and Size Distribution as TC (Total Counts) Data Each device operates via RS-232 and scientists and environmental engineers using our data logger system gain access to the data from 1-minute intervals upwards. A fully automatic self-test and control system monitors the performance of the instrument and reports possible errors. This results in a considerable reduction of the total cost of ownership. Protocol Since the systems were developed in Germany, all of them can be operated in networks using the standardized GESYTEC network protocol. However, many other operational modes can be used, naturally including the GRIMM software package. Software All environmental GRIMM EDMs can be operated with the special LabView based software developed by GRIMM. Data can be easily shown and evaluated in real-time. Below are examples of data presentation. Notice that all data obtained are stored on the memory card (or data logger), so no data loss will occur with the hardware selected. 8 8 System Communication Smartphone App SDS (System Diagnostic Software) Be one step ahead smartphone-controlled spectrometers The new GRIMM System Diagnostic Software (SDS) en ables the customer to retrieve information on the instrument status of a GRIMM spectrometer directly on-site. The SDS software can be installed on PCs and that PC can be simply connected to the environmental dust monitor by USB. The whole diagnostic is a one click solution and you access all parameters that are relevant information, such as the status of the laser diode, the measurement cell, the elec tronics, etc. Since you carry already the world s knowledge in your pocket, why wouldn t you also want to use your smartphone for controlling measurements? GRIMM offers a brand-new and easy-to-handle smart phone app for Android-based mobile phones. With this powerful app, you simply establish your connection to the spectrometer (via Bluetooth) and start your measurements. This can be very helpful for making measurements where you cannot access the instrument anymore once it has been put into position, or a cable connection is not possible, etc. This can eliminate special holes (especially in restricted areas) to guide cables outside of such systems. This simplifies your work and measurement tasks enormously. You can even set the measurement parameters with this app, like measurement intervals. After the spectrometer has been remotely started, the measurement data is being displayed in realtime on the screen of your mobile phone. All relevant values are displayed and interpreted by the software automatically. The user will be informed if any of these values are critical and the software will give recommendations how to deal with these results. So this is a huge step forward in terms of on-site operation and will ease the service. There is no need to take the instrument to the lab for further diagnostics all results are available in the field! This user friendly software program has almost the same features like our LabView software: Select the spectrometer you want to measure with Control the spectrometer Set measurement intervals See the measurement data in real-time Display the values as number in a table Let the data be displayed as graphs Send screen shots of the current particle situation by or store them You can simply download the GRIMM app from the Google playstore and install it on your Android-based mobile phone. Results from a successful test of the device status (top) and a field test (bottom). Additionally, in combination with the proven GRIMM Field Test Kit 185, the customer is able to control the calibration status of the instrument. The field test is a fast and easy tool: with the Field Test Kit 185 connected to the sample inlet, particle size distributions are measured for 60 seconds and the result is automatically interpreted by the software (see picture above). The Field Test Kit 185 (see page 9 for more details) works on the basis of an aerosol generator with NIST certified PSL particles with a diameter of 1 µm and is therefore a traceable reference method. Data can be shown online on a smartphone (Android 4). Finally, all information on the status of the device and on the result of the field test can be displayed and saved in a serial no. specific report.

9 Field Evaluation 9 Field Test Kit 185 The technically well engineered all-in-one system EDM 180 satisfies customers worldwide with its high flexibility and precision. The use in worldwide networks has proven that the long time stability of the instrument is one of its major benefits. We recommend an annual validation of the instrument. In order to provide the customer a tool for regular validation in the field, the GRIMM Field Test Kit 185 has been developed for use together with the GRIMM SDS software. The principle of the Field Test Kit 185 is based on the generation of a monodisperse aerosol with NIST certified polystyrene latex particles (PSL). The PSL particles are provided in an aqueous suspension which is diluted 1:400 for the use in the test kit. The diluted suspension is nebulized with an atomizer and subsequently the wet aerosol is diluted with particle free, dry air. The Field Test Kit is equipped with a precipitator for reducing particle agglomerates in order to narrow the particle size distribution. The GRIMM SDS software guides the user through the validation process: after the spectrometer has been started, the field tester is connected to the aerosol inlet. After a time interval of 60 seconds, the result of the validation is displayed together with the necessary information on the calibration status. Test Kit 186: Zero Filter Test, Leak Test and Sample Air Flow Control To complete the field validation of the EDM 180, GRIMM offers the Test Kit 186. The device enables the customer to easily control the pneumatic state of the sample tube and the EDM 180. The device is attached to the end of the sample tube and therefore gives the customer the opportunity to test the sample tube and the instrument. The accessories are easy to use and fulfill three major functions: (a) zero filter test, (b) system leak test and (c) control of the correct sample air flow system.

10 10 Certifications and System Approvals of GRIMM Environmental Dust Monitors General The GRIMM model EDM 180 is the only approved PM moni tor worldwide that provides optically measured PM10 and PM2.5 values simultaneously in real-time. Worldwide approval and certification tests based on some 15 years of field experience have put us in a position where today we can exactly calculate the correct PM values in ambient conditions! Currently, the unique GRIMM EDM 180 is the only optical system to have passed environmental approvals for PM monitoring in accordance with gravimetric reference systems for PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 using an optical laser system. 11 19" Rack Mounted Dust Monitor EDM 180 Stationary EPA and EN Approved Environmental Dust Monitor for Simultaneous Measurement of PM10 + PM2.5 + PM1 with one Device! 11 System Installation The EDM 180 is a 19" and 6 RU rack version to be installed in a shelter and consists of three components, namely sample pipe with internal dryer and roof flange connector, sample pipe holder (2 RU), and the actual Environmental Dust Monitor (4 RU). The concept is that the actual Environmental Dust Monitor on the 19" rack can be taken out easily for check or service without removing the sample pipe. This means that the sample pipe, held by the sample pipe holder can be disconnected without any need to remove the sample pipe. Therefore there will be no damage to the roof by time. All it needs is to move the so-called lift and the job is done. And there is no hassle in reestablishing the connection by sliding it up or sliding it down for disconnecting it. This lift lever can simply be accessed through the front door of the EDM 180. EUROPEAN regulation 96/G2/EG grants for the control of air quality, that the instrument of GRIMM Aerosol Technik, model EDM 180 for continuous measurement has the equivalent acceptance as automated instrument. "AEM tested model EDM 180" for continuous automated measurement of PM2.5 and PM10 in accordance to the European standard EN and EN the instrument passed the equivalency requirements. Other approvals/regulations are also followed such as the Russian or Chinese approvals! Details on request. System Combination Like all GRIMM modular systems, also the EDM 180 can be upgraded at any time on-site to measure up to three PM values and the total counts (TC). In addition, all EDM 180 can be expanded at any later time to supply the particle size and count distribution from 0.25 μm to 32 μm in 31 different size channels, all in 1-minute intervals. All combinations are listed on page 5. General The GRIMM EDM 180 has the capability to simultaneously measure PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 values in real-time and conforms to European standards for PM values and TC (total counts). The monitor is approved in accordance to: Europe EN for PM10 and EN for PM2.5 US EPA for PM2.5 Russia GOST for PM10 + PM2.5 China for QXT 173 for PM10 + PM2.5

12 12 Handheld Aerosol Spectrometers EDM 11-E and EDM 107 Unique Features With the handheld Environmental Dust Monitors of the GRIMM s environmental product group, the entire PM values are all on hand in real-time. These reliable top of the line devices were developed especially for mobile and instant on-site measurements of environmental dust. They are portable, battery operated, tough and display simultaneously all three PM values (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1) in realtime. The PM masses are gathered in a size range from 0.25 to 32 µm in over 30 size classes and are displayed as PM values. There are two models available, namely: Model EDM 11-E the new slim version with many additional features, such as wireless Bluetooth operation, USB (type A and B), Ethernet, SD-card storage, RS-232 and analog sensor connector. Model EDM 107 successfully in use for over ten years. It can be used as a portable device, but also inside the GRIMM weather housing model 163 for unattended outdoor use. Both versions allow that: the measured sample can be collected on an integrated removable 47 mm PTFE-filter for gravimetrical and/or chemical analysis (dual technology), enabling the laboratory post-analysis, the output of mass specific PM10, PM2.5, PM1 are given each minute in real time, all values of the particle count in 31 size channels (extension kit count, optional) can also be expressed, all results output via an RS-232 interface, the measured data are automatically and continuously saved on a removable storage card. The output of the measurement data can be shown by our high-performance user-friendly evaluation software on LabView basis, even remotely with the EDM 11-E. 13 Outdoor Extension Kit Housing 163 Combined with the EDM 107 or the Stand-alone System EDM Mobile Environmental Dust Monitor EDM Housing 163 Mobile Environmental Dust Monitor EDM 164 Many customers want not only to have the dust values of indoor conditions (such as houses, tunnels, train stations, etc.) but also the corresponding outdoor values for intercomparison. GRIMM therefore developed a compact glass fiber weather protection housing for the EDM 107 in such a way that the EDM 107 can be taken out at any time in the field without having to use any tools. Since authorities demand an accurate PM10 and PM2.5 spreading calculation of the dust in the sector of building, storage, handling and waste management it was no surprise that this housing was needed. The EDM 164 is nearly identical to the model EDM 107 inside the weather protection housing 163, however the EDM 164 has the dust monitor as fixed installation inside and is equipped with a large external sample pump for continuous operation 24/7. Many customers use several of those EDM 164 stations placed around the critical area and all data are collected and transmitted wirelessly with the integrated GRIMM data logger to a central observation station for modelling. This data network can be expended by the additional use of our meteorological sensors. More details about the data logger on page 19. The EDM 107 can be expanded to measure even the size distribution in 31 different size channels from 0.25 to 32 μm. The EDM 107 inside the housing 163 has the advantage that it is light, has a heated sample pipe to avoid humidity which falsifies the measurement results and can easily be carried around. It can even be operated with solar panels. Both the EDM 164 and the EDM 107 inside the housing 163 are portable and can be simply connected to either a 24 VDC or a 220 VAC power source. This package can be installed either on a roof, a lamp post, or on a truck, so field monitoring is possible. Additional meteorological sensors can assist in modelling the aerosol movement. Maintenance For our advantages in maintenance please see page 17.

14 14 EDM 365 with the (Optional) SVC EDM 365-SVC Option The SVC option is a two-in-one sample pipe. In one pipe is the proven Nafion sample dryer for measuring the total dust mass, and the other pipe can be heated up to 300 C. By heating the SVC pipe, SVCs will evaporate and only the non-svc share will remain for the measurement. A solenoid valve switches in user-adjustable intervals between the Nafion and the heated SVC pipe supplying sample air to the monitor. In this way, one can determine by the difference of the two measurement modes the share of semivolatile compounds. Transportable Industrial Environmental Dust Monitor EDM 365 Based on the same principle as the EDM 164 the EDM 365 has however two major differences: The sample air is not warmed up in the sample pipe to eliminate possible humidity as in the EDM 164, but ex tracts possible moisture isothermically by using a NAFION air dryer system. This means, that it does not have any losses of semi-volatile compounds (SVC). The EDM 365 can also be operated with the SVC sampling pipe to identify in real-time the PM values and the (possible) SVC concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 in the ambient air. The EDM 365 is a heavy duty industrial device, made from stainless steel and powder-coated, designed to operate unattended (even with solar panel) out in the field and transmitted wirelessly data of accurate quantity of PM10 and PM2.5 emissions from each source in real time. This device is portable and can be simply installed onto any platform (a roof, a truck, etc.) as they can be run from either 24 VDC or 220 VAC power sources. Details about the data logger see page 19. EDM 365 with SVC sample pipe The 365 SVC sample pipe can be used on the 180, 365, 465 and 665 version in exchange to the standard sampling pipe. Furthermore the measurement range can be extended to measure the ultrafine particle concentration down to 10 nm. This can be of interest for many combustion pro cesses and for road-side monitoring. Alternatively by the use of the PAH sensor, the fresh gen erated aerosol share can be differentiated from the PM values, for a better understanding of local dust against long range transport in real-time. Additional meteorological sensors can assist in modelling the aerosol distribution and the movement of relevant material. For details please see page 19. SVC measurements with EDM 365-SVC

15 Mobile Environmental EDM 465 UFP-C Ultrafine Particle Counter Mobile Environmental Ultrafine Particle Counter EDM 465 UFP-C The additional knowledge garnered over the past couple of years with regard to ultrafine particles (UFP) has resulted in this becoming a key area of interest in environmental moni toring and related studies - as these particles have potentially impacts on air quality and health. Accordingly, the US EPA has defined UFP as those particles smaller than 100 nm (< 0.1 μm = PM0.1) that exist in large quantities in the urban environment. The subsequent extension of the measurement range for the GRIMM EDMs down to 7 nm was thus a target to extend the range of environmental monitoring solutions. This was achieved by the use of one of the GRIMM CPC counters, modified for this use and a cut-off at 7 nm. GRIMM offers three solutions for this application, namely: an attachment to an existing EDM 180 as 19" rack monitoring system, a NANO sensor in addition to the PM monitor in the EDM 365 or the stand-alone EDM 465 UFP-C as described below. This EDM 465 UFP-C system has the following characteristics: an internal liquid supply for the CPC counter inside (for long-time operation), a dehumidification system for the sample air to avoid additional moisture in the CPC counter, a recovery system for condensed moisture from the CPC counter, built-in meteorology systems for later modelling, it is easy to install and flexible to operate, contains data acquisition and logger system for remote wireless data transfer, and reliable performance requiring only minimal maintenance The sample pipe operates via the Nafion isothermal air drying system. This means there is no loss of semi-volatile compounds (SVC) and can therefore count the full aerosol concentration continuously at all times. However, by the use of our SVC special sample pipe with a selectable heater the differentiation between the total counts and the SVC eliminated counts can be shown. This allows the determination of the SVC fraction contribution in the atmosphere. Additional meteorological sensors can assist in modelling the aerosol distribution and movement of relevant ma terial. For details, see page 19. Several EDM 465 UFP-C stations can be placed around a critical area and all the data are collected and transmitted wirelessly with the integrated GRIMM data logger to a central observation station. For more details about the logger see page 19. All measurement results are stored in a central PC and can be easily accessed by our powerful software package (see pages 6 and 7). 15

16 16 Wide Range Aerosol Spectrometer (WRAS) in a Midi Shelter EDM 665 Wide Range Aerosol Spectrometer EDM 665 Shelter (WRAS) The EDM 665 is designed for research allowing the user to meas ure automatically with one system in the field the 31 size channel distribution with spectrometer (or PM10 + PM2.5 + PM1), the 44 channel NANO particle SMPS+C system, as well as meteorological sensors, and can also be equipped with an semi-volatile compound sam pling system (SVC) Both diagrams show 3-D results from field monitoring. The concept is consisting of the EDM 180 as 19" rack instru ment combined with the GRIMM SMPS+C nano particle counter and sizer. This combination is the scientific flagship of GRIMM and the most powerful WRAS worldwide, since it offers an automatic system measuring 75 different size channels of particles in the atmosphere, from 5 nm up to 30,000 nm in minutes. In addition there is space for optional sensors as well, for example meteoro logy etc., so that these research systems supply data 24/7 out in the field. Each shelter is stand-alone with air-condition to keep all monitors at relevant tempera ture ranges for optimum performance. The complete system can be moved and installed easily in the field and be operated unattended for one month. The size of the shelter is only 80 x 80 x 160 cm. Pollution Data EDM 180 and SMPS+C system underneath; on top the butanol and the water tank with indicators All results obtained are stored on an integrated data logger that sends the results of all instruments, including the shelter position, wirelessly to a central data collection system, allowing the establishment of historical weather records and the main purpose of the federal monitoring networks.

17 EDM 765 for PM and Gas Monitoring in one Shelter Compact Gas and Dust Shelter EDM 765 Monitoring of PM10, PM2.5, PM1, TC, particle size distribution, meteorological data as well as optional gas values like NO/NO2 /NOx /Ozone/H2S or others with one system. Shelter Concept for the EDM 765 There is a trend towards miniaturization of complete meas urement stations due to the fact that mobility and handling without loss of data quality is an important factor. With this in mind, GRIMM designed a 19" rack solution that contains the EDM 180 dust moni toring system and has space for other approved gas sensors, for example NO / NO2 / NO X, Ozone, H2S and thus practically contains similar equipment as the classical shelters out in the field, however GRIMM s solu tion is much more compact. This compact shelter provides air-condition, so that all moni tors are kept within relevant temperature ranges for optimum performance at all times. Easy access to the moni toring equipment is accom plished via access from both sides of the shelter. The sample pipe is connected to the optical fine dust monitoring system like at the EDM 665. Approvals This patented technical solution was presented to the US EPA and the European Community for approval and today the GRIMM EDM180 has not only achieved the PM10 and PM2.5 approval, but also TC correlation proof with CPC s. Maintenance All GRIMM Environmental Dust Monitors, no matter if stand-alone or as 19" rack installations in shelters, operate on self-control during summer and winter months to en sure continued instrument performance, allowing the planning of preventive maintenance even at remote stations. This reduces the field efforts considerably, as well as the operational costs, for example electricity, etc. and thus allows for better use of these instruments in the field. 17

18 18 Calibration & Service Calibration Tower All GRIMM Environmental Spectrometers are very carefully factory calibrated using for all units our mother refer ence device that has been calibrated with NIST-certified mono disperse PSL particles. The calibration state of the refer ence unit is verified in regular time intervals and is transferred to the customer s candidate devices by a calibration process that has been optimized in regards to precision and efficiency: calibration with polydisperse dolomite aerosol in two separate steps calibration of the fine channels with ambient air Both steps are carried out using the shown calibration tower to establish a perfect match to the reference unit. The calibration is subsequently validated through several steps, namely: mass and count correlation with a polydisperse aerosol at high concentrations (dolomite), mass and count correlation with a polydisperse aerosol at low concentrations (ambient air), and a 48 hour field test, to compare the correlation and field stability to the reference unit. 19 Important Options for the GRIMM Systems Data Logger PAH-Sensor This all-in-one solution is a microprocessor system with integrated WEB server that interacts between the meas urement instrument and the TCP/IP protocol. The data logger can be integrated into all GRIMM Environmental Dust Monitors, has internal GPS, 4 GB data storage, remote control and the possibility to combine information from GRIMM monitors with data from various other sensors such as meteorol ogy and gas sensors. Data can be transmitted in real-time to the internet, the GRIMM data base system, your webpage and/or intranet. Option for measuring the total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration in real-time. This sensor can be combined with all EDM devices for an instant differentia tion from fresh aerosols to long range transported aerosols. NanoSizer Meteorological Sensors This particle size extension kit permits the meas urement of particles smaller than 250 nm down to 10 nm. This instrument is available as small box but also as 19" version and can be combined with all EDMs allowing the measurement of an additional 10 size channels in 1-minute intervals.
