5 Waste management in Finland Utilization rate of waste in Finland is about 50 % Target is to eliminate landfill waste by 2050 Over 300 companies in recycling and waste management Innovative technologies for the whole value chain e.g. biofuels from waste, electricity and district heat by gasification of waste Finland is investing strongly in utilization of waste new waste-to-energy projects More than 10 new, large waste-to-energy plants planned Several biogas, bio-ethanol and bio-diesel plants recently started, in construction or planning

8 Case: E-waste, a major challenge globally Globally, more than 1 billion mobile phones sold in 2007 (896 million in 2006). Every day Americans throw out > 350,000 phones and 130,000 computers, making E-waste the fastest-growing part of the U.S. garbage stream. Contains both valuable and hazardous elements Manufacturing mobile phones and computers consumes 3 % of the gold and silver mined worldwide each year; 13 % of the palladium and 15 % of cobalt value of e-equipment metals used annually 45.4 billion $ (2007). potential material resource of 40 million tons/year. energy savings, environmental impact Source: UNEP, recycling from E-waste to resources
