Fully Defined Problem: We all know about the impact humans are having here on Earth. The rise in global warming concern and other environmental issues are causing people of all occupations to worry more about their future generation s living conditions. We were given the challenge of trying to make Penn State a more sustainable university. Each group was to choose a specific building throughout campus and try and redesign it in order to make it more energy efficient. We chose Beaver Stadium because we felt that it is one of the most important buildings to this university and wanted to help improve this building even further into being one of the most economically and environmentally friendly structures on the planet. Why people use Beaver Stadium: Beaver Stadium is mostly used during the fall. This is because majority of the use is for football games and football related events. By increasing the use of Beaver Stadium for more sports teams and events this can help to make more use of a building that consumes so much energy. Beaver Stadium has a large use of electricity, heat, water usage, food consumption, and waste. During the football season the stadium is used on average 6 home games per fall semester. For each football game food is purchased and disposed of in waste, human waste from the use of bathrooms and football players showers, and heating for the press and ticket boxes. Customer Needs: Specifications Unit/Measurements Reference Electricity 9,794, kwh All UP building excel Natural Gas 4, Mcf All UP building excel Potable Water 5,640, Gal All UP building excel Steam 13, klb All UP building excel Capacity 107,282 People Online food 300,000 lbs Online
waste 5,729, lbs Online Customer Needs: Customers need to be able to purchase food and dispose of food and other garbage. They also need to be able to use the restrooms and running water. The press box and ticket boxes need heat in their rooms. Also there is a need for electricity for the lighting and for the running of electric machines and computers. Penn State needs to have use of Beaver Stadium for game days and hopefully soon other uses of the building to better make use of the building. Target Specification: We want to produce more energy than the stadium consumes obviously, but if that plan doesn t go through as planned we will at least offset the energy used per year. We will try to offset all the waste, and energy consumption. If we only reduce it is still an achievement because there is a lot of waste. Human,Walking, biking or transit system can reduce pollution by cars and buses Student Survey Compilation: By compiling our data from our surveys we will be able to gain information on how we better sell the ideas of sustainability to the Penn state students. All four of us asked questions to students regarding sustainability. Those questions were: (1) Are we going to run out of fuel? (2) Is sustainability relevant or just talk? (3) How can we be sustainable? (4) What do you do towards sustainability? Save/produce energy, recycle, less trash, charity etc... (5) What (if any) lifestyle change(s) would you make to help this cause? (6) Do you think it is necessary to make any changes or things are fine the way they are? For the first question: we compiled that 28 out of 32 said we would run out of energy! For the second question: 30 out of the 32 said that sustainability is relevant to today s world. The third question: The answers varied from just regularly conserving energy by using less water and things like that to finding and using alternative uses of power such as hydro, wind, and solar power. Fourth question: Just about everyone said they recycle, with a few responses saying the reserve water use while brushing their teeth and taking showers, and then finally walking or carpooling. Fifth question: A lot of people said that they would recycle more and drive less. With others saying that they would reserve water use and do whatever changes were deemed necessary to save energy. Sixth question: Everyone said that it is necessary to make changes to how we use and conserve energy if we want the Earth to stay nice and resourceful. Conclusion; It appears that most people are aware that we need to conserve energy and be more energy efficient. Most people think it is achievable and is relevant to todays world. also it is
essential for the future of humans. Lots of people recycle but they say that it was not enough and we need to do more. The majority said that they would make changes in their lifestyle to conserve energy. If we have a clean up crew for after the stadium, have them do a better job of sorting the garbage to better recycle certain materials left at the stadium. Concept Screening: Criteria Concept 1 Concept 2 Concept 3 Concept 4 Look Cost Energy Efficiency Practicality Concept Selection: Concept 1 Concept 2 Concept 3 Concept 4 Criteria Weight Score Score Score Score Look 25% Cost 25% Energy Efficiency 25% Practicality 25% Total 100% Parts: Waterless urinals 52% less water dual flush toilets high efficiency field lighting motion sensor lighting
low E coating for window low flow water fixtures LED lights Pavegen Tiles: Each tile produces 7 watts per step, with the locations we will put the tiles it will ensure that each person steps on the tiles going into and out of the stadium. 7 watts x 2 steps at least per person. Multiply that by at least 107,282 people. That alone will produce 1/9th of the energy produced in a year.
Students cooperation: In order for students to be more likely to participate in the sustainability of Penn State and be more energy efficient, students need to start young and teach children to be energy savers and to correctly recycle and to make being energy efficient drained into the minds of younger children. This will then in turn help society as a whole become more sustainable. Conclusion: Looking over the information we have, it appears we need to design Beaver Stadium more energy efficient. Taking information we have, we assembles, redesigned, and made the stadium more efficient by using passive solar heating, vertical axis windows, rain collection, pavegen tiles, and solar panel. Making a more efficient stadium will allow Penn State to become a more sustainable campus and eventually become a sustainable city.
