Certified Compostable Applications Compost Matters 2017 Compost Council of Canada Workshop Presented by: Isaul Lopez Biopolymers Sales & Business Development Canada

Objectives: Importance of organic waste recycling. Role of Certified Compostable Products to increase organics diversion from landfill.

Organics Diversion Benefits Waste is produced every day About 50% of waste material generated is compostable Diversion saves decreasing landfill space Landfills release methane into the atmosphere which has a much greater greenhouse impact than carbon dioxide. More compostable products are entering the market Our Soils benefit from the ongoing addition of COMPOST: Food to the Soil. Increased Soil Carbon Storage Decreased Water Use Decreased Soil Erosion Reduced Fertilizer Use Reduced Herbicide Use

City of Montreal The city is slowly expanding its organic waste pickup program from the current 97,000 households in eight boroughs to all 19 of its boroughs starting in By 2019, the city plans to offer collection of organic waste to 536,000 households every home, duplex and apartment unit in buildings with eight residences or less on its territory, roughly twothirds of the city s total number of households Organic waste, which includes all table scraps as well as meat and fish, grass clippings, leaves and things like tissues and soiled pizza boxes, makes up 47 per cent of Montrealers garbage, the city estimates. But only 13 per cent of it is recycled, far short from the provincial and city goals of recuperating 60 per cent by Those goals are now being revised, city officials said, but it is still aiming to hit an 80 per cent recovery rate by 2020.* * Source; Montreal Gazette, Published on: August 11,

Metro Vancouver The follow slide shows the growth in access to organics recycling service for several different sectors from 2015 to and indicate whether the particular business/residence contacted has access to some degree of collection of organics for recycling. The regional disposal ban on organics started January 1, Ref. Metro Vancouver Solid Waste Services 9

Metro Vancouver, cont. In the above slide a Spring 2016 telephone survey of four sectors (restaurants, grocers, large institutions and multi-family residences) told us that in this region: Ref. Metro Vancouver Solid Waste Services 10

Source Separated Collection of Food Waste Makes Sense Greenhouse gas emissions in CO 2 equivalents from 1kg organic kitchen waste [grams] Landfill Incineration Organic kitchen waste Composting Composting Source: ROUGH calculations by BASF not third party verified System boundaries: A person uses a bag to collect 1 kg of organic kitchen waste. If PE bag is used, both waste and the bag are disposed off in landfill or incineration plant; if ecovio bag is used, organic waste is composted together with the bag. Assumptions: Incineration of organic kitchen waste is assumed to be without energy recovery (heating value is 3,6 MJ/kg, accepted from the Critical Review Panel on the EEA study of 2 in 1 bag). Energy recovery by incineration of the PE bag is included but of no relevance. In the composting scenario, it is assumed that fertilizers are substituted. Results range: 10% uncertainty

Certified compostable products: Comply to Canadian BNQ (CAN/BNQ ) and ASTM 6400 Specifications for Certified Compostable Bags and Products Often act as a carrying media for organic waste, increasing diversion Biodegrade in Aerobic composting process Do not disturb Dry Anaerobic digestion process Biodegrade at the digestate composting stage after AD CAN/BNQ

Why Certified Compostable Bags? Makes Residential & Commercial Food Waste Collection More Efficient, Increase Diversion Rate. Easier Safer Cleaner 17

Use of certified compostable bags is best practice for food waste collection Easier Easy handling of residues. Convenient. Bags fits to contour/size of bin. Weather resistant. Safer less direct contact of residues with residents, and employees. Reduce chance for transmitting food borne illness (e.i. mold) and reduce vermin infestation. Cleaner Bin stays cleaner and no leaking of waste water. Less water and detergent, less frequent bin washing, more sustainable. Less odors. Bag breathes, allows oxygen (O 2 ) in and permits water vapor to leave the bag (reducing moisture content up to 25% - 50% in five days). Reduce odours caused by anaerobic conditions.

Facts about coffee capsules market The coffee capsule market is growing globally. According to a NA Manufacturer website, the company sold more than 30 billion pods between January 2014 and September Ref. CBC News Posted: Jan 13, :23 AM AT Compostable coffee capsule After brewing the structure and organic residue from coffee can be composted The water content helps the organic residues to compost The smallest ammount (the packaging) can be composted with the coffee The main part of the coffee capsule waste is water and coffee residue. The smallest part, is the packaging itself. The whole can be turned into valueable compost! 23

New Packaging Concepts for Coffee based on BASF s ecovio Certified Compostable Coffee Kit 24

Swiss Coffee Company with beanarella winner of the golden "IDEE SUISS AWARD 2013" Capsules made of ecovio IS Injection molded capsules with fine mesh for good extraction Heat stable during brewing process Compostable Colorable in different colors Easy to seal Barrier packaging with ecovio Compostable printing inks Compostable Sappi paper Metallized Cellophane-film ecovio as inner sealing layer 25

Summary: Organic waste to landfill is not a sustainable waste management practice. Organics recycling is sustainable. Certified compostable products act often as carrying media for organic waste. Certified Compostable products play an integral role in organics recycling success. Certified compostable products are gaining popularity in food packaging applications to increase food waste diversion. Questions? Isaul.lopez@basf.com Thank you
