But to a minor extent it is used as a solubiliser in various products. The substance is a low molecular weight, highly flammable liquid of moderate volatility which solidifies below 25 C. Therefore exposure is limited if handled with usual precautions. If the risk management recommendations mentioned under RISK MANAGEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS are observed the substance can be handled safely. 2 Uses and application As an mainly intermediate Tert.-Butanol is a starting material for the production for example of tert.-butyl peroxides as polymerization initiators. Furthermore the intermediate use covers use as an alkylating agent for various products, or production of various tert-butyl esters as precursors for antioxidants, phenolic resins, pharmaceutical products and perfumes. Due to its good dissolving properties and also good solubility in polar and non-polar substances, TBA is outstandingly suitable as a solvent and as a solubilizer, for example in water-based paints, for the dewaxing of oils and as a denaturing agent for Ethanol. However the main use is as intermediate for or a byproduct within the production of high volume chemicals. It freezes/melts around 25 C and will either be present as a colorless liquid with a camphor-like odor or an off-white solid block depending on ambient temperature.the liquid is lighter than water, miscible with water, while vapors are heavier than air. Transient signs of altered nervous system function (commonly observed with short-chain alcohol exposure) are observed with exposure to high levels. Slight skin and moderate eye irritation have been observed from contact to liquid but there is no evidence of allergic skin reactions. High air concentrations are reported to cause respiratory irritation. Tertiary butyl alcohol is readily absorbed through the skin and by oral exposure or respiration. Effects noted in repeated-exposure studies in rodents reveal target organ effects specific to rodents and are not relevant to human health. Tests conducted in bacteria, mammalian cells and in animals demonstrate tertiary butyl alcohol is not mutagenic/genotoxic. Long term toxicity studies conducted on rats and mice have found tumours to occur in the kidneys of male rats and thyroids of mice. These findings have been examined through mechanistic studies and expert reviews of the tissue specimens demonstrating the tumours arose from rodent-specific tumour formation characteristics that would not be expected to occur in humans. There were no specific effects observed in studies of reproduction and developmental toxicity conducted in rats. Non-specific effects on development were observed but at exposure levels that also caused effects in parental animals indicating that developing animals are not more sensitive to toxicity. The Log Kow value for tertiary butyl alcohol is low, indicating a tendency to partition to aqueous phases and a low potential for bioaccumulation. In addition, tertiary butyl alcohol is inherently biodegradable, and is not expected to be persistent in the environment. Tertiary butyl alcohol was not found to present an ecotoxicity hazard based on the results of acute and chronic studies. Three trophic levels of aquatic species (two species for chronic tests) and one terrestrial species were tested. Therefore it is not a PBT (Persistent, Bioaccumulative, Toxic) substance. Exposure Human health h Tert-Butanol is produced within the EEC with about a million tons per year where the most of it is used as an intermediate with minimized exposure. For other uses especially as a solubilizer the percentage in the used products e.g. coatings and cleaning products is very low. Based on model calculations if the Risk Management Measures under Risk management Recommendations are observed the expected concentrations at workplace where values below the no effect levels. For consumer use where no personal protective measures are presumed to be in use for limitation of exposure it is essential to observe the instructions on product packaging.
