INTEGRATED TERRITORIAL INVESTMENT OF THE MAR MENOR Salvador García-Ayllón ITI of Mar Menor Coordinator 15/03/2017
REGION OF MURCIA & MAR MENOR The Mar Menor is one of the main signs of identity of the Region of Murcia: a salt water lagoon (between km 2, mean depth 3.6 m, maximum 6 m) located in South-eastern Spain. The lagoon is isolated from the Mediterranean Sea by a 20 km long and 200 m wide ancient sandy bar called La Manga.
A HIGH PROTECTED AREA IN THE REGIONOF MURCIA The Mar Menor is a highly environmentally protected area because of its high natural value: - European Protected Area of the Natura 2000 Network: 5 Places of Community Interest (SCI) and 4 Special Protection Areas for Birds (SPAs) - 2 international protection areas RAMSAR and SPAMI - 3 Regional Protected Areas - Areas of Protection of Wildlife
A COMPLEX ENVIRONMENT TO MANAGE
STRATEGY FOR THE INTEGRATED COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT OF THE MAR MENORAND ITS ENVIRONMENT The Integrated Coastal Zone Management Strategy (ICZM) of Mar Menor and its environment has been the technical and scientific support of the ITI of Mar Menor. It is based on the development of a Socio-Ecological System of the Mar Menor and its environment (SESMM) so that the Mar Menor regains its good environmental status and allow a sustainable cohabitation with human activities through ITI investments.
PARTICIPATORY PROCESS OF THE STRATEGY PHASE I FEBRUARY 2016 INTEGRATED DIAGNOSIS: Where are we? PHASE II APRIL 2016 PROPOSED MEASURES: Where do we want to go?
ICZM: MULTIDISPLINARY APPROACH AND COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM The problem of the Mar Menor is not only in the lagoon...
OBJECTIVES OF THE ITIOF THE MAR MENOR Promote public investment in R+D+I projects that contribute to the elimination of the current impacts to which the gap is exposed: ITI is proposed in a positive way. Improving water quality, reducing pollution discharges to the Mar Menor. Establish a framework for future governance that will allow the promotion, development and maintenance of the natural heritage and protected areas in the Mar Menor coastal lagoon in sustainable cohabitation with existing activities.
PHASES OF THE ITI MAR MENOR Phase I: PRIORITY Environmental recovery of the lagoon Phase II: Enhancement of the lagoon Harnessing their potential and developing a sustainable development framework
FUNDSINVOLVED(I) ERDF Operational Program of the Region of Murcia represents to the region an investment of 370 million euros. Investment is divided into three sections: R&D: 57% of the funds Environmental priorities: 28% Social priorities: 12% Region of Murcia invest the highest % of ERDF to environmental priorities in Spain The ITI of the Mar Menor currently has 96,931,550 from ERDF, EAFRD & EMFF funds.
