Hazardous waste: area-wide collection, professional treatment and consistent recovery. REMONDIS Industrie Service provides state-of-the-art services for dealing with hazardous waste services which have been setting standards in the branch for many years and which will continue to do so in the future. As we have our own logistics system, plants and landfills, we are dependent on no-one but ourselves. This does not only mean greater efficiency but also higher quality and lower costs from which you profit as our customer. Wherever you need us, we ll be there: we have a germanwide network from Sylt to the Bavarian Forest and an international one, too. Service, water, raw materials and energy for millions. The REMONDIS Group Since its foundation in 1934, REMONDIS has developed into a leading international water and environmental services company built up on the solid foundations of a family-run business full of tradition. Today, REMONDIS is a global service partner providing a wide range of convenient service systems, high quality raw materials, innovative products, alternative fuels and regenerative energy around the world. The Group employs approximately 18,700 people at around 480 locations in 20 European countries as well as in China, Japan, Taiwan and Australia. Hazardous waste specialists. REMONDIS Industrie Service REMONDIS Industrie Service has been a 100 % subsidiary of REMONDIS AG & Co. KG for many years. We are the Group s specialists for treating hazardous waste, especially industrial hazardous waste. With our full range of services, we can provide the correct solution for any waste management task. Furthermore, we use the material streams we receive as a source of raw material and energy. 2
> REMONDIS Industrie Service s branch in Lübeck. The hazardous waste incineration plant in Brunsbüttel owned by SAVA GmbH & Co. KG a company belonging to the REMONDIS Group. Safe disposal and recycling through each and every phase We provide comprehensive services along the whole of the chain to provide the highest possible levels of safety: 1. Collection and transport using state-of-the-art container systems and special vehicles 2. Temporary storage, sorting and packing at our customer s or at our own locations 3. Pre-treatment and re-packing in one of our many facilities 4. Recovery or disposal within the REMONDIS Group network Environmental protection and economic efficiency are not opposites Process-integrated waste management unites environmental protection and economic efficiency. Cost reductions resulting from closed-loop life-cycles, reduced volumes of waste and a reduced need for primary raw materials all prove that this is true. Nordrhein-Westfalen Rheinland- Pfalz Saarland Lünen Schleswig- Holstein Niedersachsen Hessen Baden- Würtemberg Thüringen Mecklenburg- Vorpommern Sachsen- Anhalt Bayern Brandenburg Sachsen REMONDIS Industrie Service is not only active nationwide but also beyond Germany s borders. > Advantages that speak for themselves the best possible basis for successful cooperation work You are given support from highly qualified technicians and engineers. You profit from our sustainable waste disposal concepts. You are given every possible kind of support when it comes to plant management not just for drawing up concepts for new locations but also for optimizing established processes. With our support, capacity use in your own disposal facilities will increase. The amount of your waste that is recovered will definitely increase. You opt for the secure route where all relevant regulatory, provision of proof and documentation duties are fulfilled without fail. You can be absolutely sure that we are never satisfied with the status achieved. On the contrary, we organize regular meetings to further improve ongoing processes. With REMONDIS, you can make use of all the advantages of professional outsourcing. 3
> Advice 4 Together with its customers, REMONDIS optimizes in-house waste management systems, such as here at BASF Schwarzheide GmbH and, if requested, provides the necessary personnel, too.
> Nothing has to remain the way it is. At the beginning of our co-operation, we first analyse the current situation. We do not only examine the existing logistics concept being used but also all of the material streams. If necessary, we carry out pilot trials to try out alternative recovery procedures and treatment methods. We then present you well thought-out solutions, based on the data and facts gathered, to increase quality and lower costs. Before drawing up concrete waste disposal concepts, we first analyse the composition and volumes of your material streams. We suggest a number of alternative ways of working together, so you can choose the model which suits your needs best. Examples that show an exact analysis is well worth the effort If we notice that valuable production space is being taken up by unnecessary containers, we replace them by smaller, space-saving containers, empty them regularly and set up temporary storage areas away from the actual production floor. If we discover that waste is not being sufficiently separated, then we help you to change this by providing the necessary sorting systems. This generally reduces waste disposal costs by a considerable amount. If we see that there are areas, in which we can take over the work at more favourable conditions, then we will present you with corresponding suggestions. A wide variety of ways to work together You choose which form of cooperation is best for you. You can opt for the plant management model outsourcing just the plant management. Or you can choose the operator model transferring all investment, planning and construction measures over to us. And we are open to suggestions for joint-ventures for example, if it provides both parties with the opportunity to enter a new market. The examples given on this page can be continued in a wide number of ways. Why not contact us we would be glad to tell you more! Systematically sorting waste at its source reduces costs. 5
> Logistics 6 We have many special vehicles in Lübeck as throughout the whole of the country so that we can reach our customers when needed within the shortest possible space of time.
> Complete logistics for collection and transport. We provide you with much more than just collecting and transporting the materials you no longer need. Special logistics concepts are needed especially for waste which poses a risk to people and the environment. We provide you with proven solutions here, too, which are implemented using our own wide range of containers and vehicles. REMONDIS runs a germanwide network of tank and container stores for temporarily storing liquid, solid and pasty waste if needed, on site at the customers, too. We provide you with the right containers for all volumes and fractions of waste. > We recover, among other things, contents of oil and petrol separators grit chamber residue emulsions and other oil/water mixtures sedimentation sludge solvent mixtures metal packaging acids and alkalines paint and varnish sludge waste containing mercury aerosol cans The right container system for each kind of waste We provide you with a suitable waste disposal system for each kind and each volume of waste. Different coloured labelling and clear symbols make it easier to separate waste at source according to type. As part of the waste disposal system, we also draw up and implement complex in-plant logistics solutions to ensure dangerous materials are removed from the production process straight away in a safe and environmentally sound manner. The right vehicle to transport the materials Every year, we collect and transport millions of tons of very different kinds of waste fractions for our customers. We use our special vehicles to carry out this work which over their many years of everyday use have more than proven their worth. Temporary storage means greater flexibility Being full service providers, disposing of plant waste also includes running in-plant temporary storage areas, waste collection areas and recycling points. Recyclable waste and hazardous waste is sorted, put into batches and bundled together into larger material streams. Thousands of companies and municipalities across the world rely on REMONDIS logistics expertise. These are just a few examples of our wide range of services. Please contact us, if you wish to receive more detailed information about the network run by the REMONDIS Group with its 480+ recycling and production facilities. Liquid hazardous waste is transported in our tankers to one of our temporary storage areas or directly to a treatment plant. 7
> Technology 8 The REMONDIS subsidiary, GRUBA in Mönchengladbach, breaks down emulsions and residue containing water from petrol and oil separators as well as from grit chambers into individual elements which can then be passed on for further recovery.
> Plants with efficient technology that will inspire you. REMONDIS runs a network of around 480 recycling and production facilities. Most of the technology being used has been developed through practical experience by our experienced engineers and technicians who have been working within the environmental service branch and the hazardous waste disposal sector for decades. Safe and reliable When processing dangerous materials, top priority must always be given to minimizing the risks involved especially if it is not clear what the exact composition of the different batches is and conditioning and homogenization are necessary to be able to treat the materials efficiently. All stages, therefore, are subject to the strictest of safety precautions with all materials being monitored and weighed when they arrive, samples taken and analyses undertaken to identify the exact contents. Hazardous waste, which has to be sorted, is then added to larger batches within the same waste category. Economically efficient and environmentally sound There is a large number of facilities within the REMONDIS network which professionally treat and recycle or dispose of hazardous waste: sorting, shredding and conditioning facilities plants to dry out pasty waste using thermal and distillation processes chemical-physical treatment facilities mercury recycling facilities waste incineration plants hazardous waste landfills In addition to this, there are a large number of special plants for specific materials for example, for recycling aerosol cans or to process fluorescent lamps. At REMONDIS waste treatment centre in Bramsche, special pressure containers with alkyls are linked up directly to the incineration process. Extreme care is needed here, as the contents are highly explosive. Alkyls must not come into contact with water or air. > Monitoring and control For many years now, all of the REMONDIS Industrie Service locations have been awarded accreditations in accordance the EfbV, the German Ordinance on Specialized Waste Management Companies. Furthermore, our specialised companies, which, for example, dispose of the contents of light liquid separators, also have an additional certificate in accordance with article 19 WHG, the Water Resources Law. Your advantage: you can rest assured that the highest quality standards are maintained at all times without having to monitor them yourselves. Should you wish to receive more detailed information about the plant network run by the REMONDIS Group, then please contact us. 9
> Services 10 There are no limits to our services we will take over every single task which you no longer wish your own personnel to do: from waste management to logistics services to operating plants.
> Rigorous cost reductions thanks to efficient outsourcing. Outsourcing non core business activities improves both quality and productivity, lowers costs and increases competitiveness. REMONDIS helps you here in a highly flexible manner providing professional solutions which go way beyond the normal standards. > Advantages of outsourcing with REMONDIS cost savings within personnel management and administration flexibility within personnel planning guaranteed continuity despite sick or holiday leave reduced administration time REMONDIS Industrie Service cooperates with its sister company, Buchen Umweltservice, for industrial cleaning services. Special kinds of waste need a special range of services REMONDIS offers a very varied range of services beyond the classic services of collecting, processing and recycling hazardous waste. Here is a small selection of our service range: emptying and cleaning oil and fat separators as well as grit chambers testing for leaks in separators cleaning, testing and maintaining containers dry vacuuming wood and metal shavings as well as gravel, sand and other free-flowing materials industrial cleaning work, tank cleaning work, standstill management, power plant service, dismantling petrol stations supplying spare parts, raw materials and auxiliary supplies as well as resources and cleansing agents refilling production storage tanks maintaining buildings, plants and facilities within the infrastructure planning, financing, constructing and operating plants including taking over the responsibility of maintenance and repair dismantling plants laboratory support from taking samples to analysis work to archiving data making a person available to be officially responsible for the hazardous waste carrying out training courses The following is valid for all services: we are in a position to provide all necessary personnel but we can also integrate your own team into the work process. We take over all your duties as a producer of waste According to the current legislation, each company is legally responsible for ensuring that its waste is recycled or disposed of in a proper manner. If you work together with REMONDIS Industrie Service then you can be released from this obligation by transferring these responsibilities to us. Transfer your obligations as a waste producer to us. We have the necessary approval to draw up certificates according to the privileged method, i.e. without the direct participation of the authorities. 11
> Raw materials 12 Precious metals, for example, are recovered from waste using distillation such as here at the REMONDIS processing plant in Amsterdam.
> Recognizing and developing sources of raw materials. Our primary target is closing life-cycles and this is true for hazardous waste, too! Thus, materials recycling is given utmost priority. We only choose energy recovery or the safe disposal of the material in incineration plants or in landfills if it is technically impossible or makes absolutely no economic sense to recover and recycle the material itself. From hazardous material to valuable material Turning hazardous waste into raw materials that no longer pose a threat to people and the environment and can be used again in production processes sometimes involves very complex procedures: but it is worth doing it also for you. Because consistent recycling plays a major role in helping to reduce waste disposal costs. Resource management for both small and large volumes of material Over the last few years, we have built up a plant network which also includes many production plants manufacturing high quality secondary raw materials, industrial goods and special products. The facilities in this network recycle, among other materials: contents of oil and petrol separators grit chamber residue emulsions and other oil/water mixtures sedimentation sludge solvent mixtures metal packaging acids and alkalis paint and varnish sludge waste containing mercury aerosol cans REMONDIS runs state-of-the-art facilities to recycle a total of 30,000 kg of mercury a year which is then fed back into production cycles around the world. Our treatment processes produce high quality raw materials and products such as: RENOMETALL, cleaned aluminium and iron from processing packaging RENOXAL, a reducing agent to reduce nitrogen oxide levels in cement kilns and large combustion plants RESOLVE, solvents and diluents Today s waste is tomorrow s source of raw materials. Much of the hazardous waste collected by us contains valuable raw materials such as metals and plastics. We recover them and feed them back into the production cycle.
> Energy 14 In Bramsche and at other plants, REMONDIS systematically processes solid, liquid or pasty waste into high quality substitute fuel sold under the brand name, RENOTHERM. This high calorific energy is primarily used by the cement industry.
> Clean energy from high calorific waste. REMONDIS has been increasing its commitment on the energy market for several years now and has been using the energetical recovery of waste to generate electricity and district heating. In addition to this, we supply high calorific fuels for use in cement kilns and industrial power plants. REMONDIS Industrie Service supplies energy plants with substitute fuels. Building and operating power plants REMONDIS runs fifteen power stations and waste incineration plants across the country playing its part, therefore, in supplying energy in Germany. Producing and marketing substitute fuels REMONDIS Industrie Service produces large volumes of substitute fuels from high calorific waste fractions for cement plants and other large industrial combustion plants as well as for power stations. By doing so we help to preserve natural resources such as the fossil fuels, oil, gas and coal. The substitute fuels, marketed under the brand name RENOTHERM, are produced from, for example, reaction and distillation residue, a by-product of processes used in the chemical industry. The waste undergoes a complex, multi-phase procedure during which contaminants are removed and is then processed into a substitute fuel with guaranteed quality. By the end of the process, the waste has been turned into a free-flowing product consisting of homogenous particles and an exactly defined calorific value. Other kinds of high calorific waste streams are also used to produce substitute fuel: contaminated plastics waste paint and varnish sludge as well as paints and varnishes in tins and printing inks reaction and distillation residue high calorific waste streams waxes and fats industrial carbon black and spent activated carbon 15
