5 CHARS Construction is Underway Triplex Nov 2015 Field & Maintenance Building Nov 2016 Main Research Building July- Nov 2017 Construction of the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) will be completed by 2017 AANDC is leading the construction project of the CHARS facility, which will be transferred to POLAR upon completion in 2017 CHARS will be a signi6icant part of the existing pan- northern network of research infrastructure across the North (CNNRO), and contribute to Canada s Northern Strategy 5
6 Knowledge Management and Mobilization The Knowledge Management component of Polar Knowledge Canada includes the following work plans: Knowledge Mobilization Capacity Building and Outreach Traditional Knowledge These activities ensure citizens, including Northerners, bene6it from publicly funded research by following standard data practices and open sharing of data and knowledge. 6
7 A Pan- Northern S&T Program A world- class science and technology program invites international cooperation Current priorities for 6irst 5- year plan ( ): Alternative and renewable energy for the North Reduce the dependency on high- cost imported energy, explore feasibility of local sources, northern application of alternative technologies Predicting the impacts of changing ice, permafrost, and snow on shipping, infrastructure, and communities Improve predictive capabilities and increase knowledge on dynamic cryospheric elements to support community adaptation and improve climate models Baseline information and monitoring to prepare for development Improve decision support for responsible and sustainable development in Canada s North through enhanced characterization Improving northern infrastructure Undertake research and technology development to improve ef6iciency and cost- effectiveness of Northern infrastructure design and construction Underwater situational awareness and associated marine research Enhance monitoring and surveillance of the environment and human activities 7
