Smart Island KIX Environmental Plan

Smart Island Concept Kansai International Airport is driven by the aim of becoming pollution-free airport that coexists and prospers together with the local region. We formulated our environmental initiatives into an Eco-Island Plan and have been working to control environmental impacts from airport-related operations, and also to reduce the impact on the region around the airport. After the management of Kansai International Airport was integrated with Osaka International Airport in July 2012, we formulated the ideal form of the new, environmentally conscious airport into smart initiatives. With using previous eco island initiatives of as a minimum condition, we aim to form a smart airport which is people-friendly and Earth-friendly, through the use of clean energy and adaptation of highly advanced information technologies. Since these initiatives are also important from the perspective of energy security, we make efforts to implement safe and reliable operations of the airport. Kansai International Airport is taking off toward new environmental challenges the evolution from Eco to Smart Island. Three Fundamental Principles Green Innovation Environmentally Advanced Airport Eco Operations Eco Relations Local Environment Five Basic Policies An airport that protects a comfortable local environment Global Environment Coexistence An airport coexisting with the local region KIX Environmental Plan Resource Recycling Biodiversity Transportation providers An airport designed with biodiversity in mind Energy companies An airport that recycles resources Cargo/freight carriers Tenant businesses Airlines 2 An airport with minimal impact on the global environment NKIAC Group Government agencies

K IX E nvi ro n ment a l Pl a n Fundamental Principles Green Innovation The Kansai International Airport was designated as a Green Innovation area by the Japanese government in February 2013 for creating a business model for a smart community that utilizes renewable energy. We aim to spread environmental technologies overseas and encourage their global application, as we andicipate the market introduction of fuel cell powered vehicles and a society that uses hydrogen as a fuel. We are working to lead the world with our large-scale hydrogen grid infrastructure demonstration, and our promotion of local energy generation using solar power and other forms of clean energy. Eco Operations We are promoting initiatives to reduce energy consumption in airport operations; in addition to the introduction of new technology such as photovoltaics and hydrogen fuel, we promote the visualization of energy efficiency at airport facilities, leading to energy being used more efficiently by using information technology. We are committed to boosting the efficiency of energy use in the entire airport, including long-term efforts aimed at airport-related businesses and contractors. Eco Relations Aiming to be an airport both welcomed and enjoyed by local communities, we make an effort to communicate well at the local level. We are also continuing our efforts to reduce our environmental impact as an airport, such as through our initiatives to reduce aircraft noise and carbon dioxide emissions, and protect water quality. Also, we strive to provide places for recreation utilizing green areas and inland waters. About KIX Environmental Plan Kansai International Airport aims to be an environmentally advanced airport that is both people-friendly and Earth-friendly. Based on the three fundamental principles above, the airport established five basic policies as the KIX Environmental Plan to undertake innovative environmental initiatives. The KIX Environmental Plan was prepared as our third environmental plan, incorporating the concept of Green Innovation into the existing Eco-Island Plan. 3

Basic Policies Based on our fundamental principles, as a 21 st century model airport coexisting with the environment, we will continue to make efforts to be an airport without pollution. Further, as one of Asia s leading airports, we are creating the Smart Island through local energy generation initiatives such as photovoltaic, wind power, and hydrogen fuel, as well as the use of information technologies, while raising energy efficiency on the entire airport island. We are also creating a global airport management model as an environmentally advanced airport aiming for harmony with the global environment and local community. 1 An airport that protects a comfortable local environment [Local Environment] The Kansai International Airport continues to comply with environmental standards for aircraft noise and is working to further reduce noise levels. In addition, for air and water quality, as a matter of course we comply with exhaust emission and water discharge regulations. To go further to reduce the airport s impacts to the greatest extent possible, we are working to protect the environment, for example, by establishing more stringent voluntary targets where necessary. Aircraft noise monitoring equipment Water quality testing laboratory 2 An airport with minimal impact on the global environment [Global Environment] The Kansai International Airport is cooperating with related contractors and businesses to take the lead in reducing greenhouse gas emissions arising from business activities. We will also promote the introduction of clean energy through the use of hydrogen and natural energy such as photovoltaics. LED lighting installed in cargo facilities (CKTS Co., Ltd.) Hydrogen-powered fuel cell bus 4

KIX Environmental Plan 3 An airport that recycles resources [Resource Recycling] We will continue to make an effort to reduce the volume of and take initiatives aiming to be a resource recycling airport that effectively uses any generated. We will also strive to provide a water circulation system designed for effective use of water resources, including the use of reclaimed water and ways to minimize the quantity of water used. Combustible Recyclable Kitchen, wood, non-recyclable paper, rags, other Cans: Steel, aluminum Glass: Unbroken glass and plastic bottles Paper: Newspaper (not advertising), magazines High-quality paper: Copy paper, office paper, documents (non-confidential), cardboard, etc. Incineration plant Combustible Large combustible items Incineration Recyclable Volume of fresh water used Firefighting Offices on the island Advanced treatment Wastewater treatment plant Reclaimed water volume Discharge volume Reclaimed water use at Kansai Int l Airport Noncombustible Combustible bulky Glass containers, ceramic containers, broken glass bottles, metal, etc. Wood, clothing, briefcases, vegetation clippings, wood products, etc. Recycling Non-combustible Landfill Reclaimed water has quality between fresh water and water and can be used only for specific uses. Truck cleaning Tarmac cleaning Toilet flushing Flow of general treatment and recycling Reducing water use, reclaiming water 4 An airport designed with biodiversity in mind [Biodiversity] We are creating seaweed beds around the airport island and striving to maintain a habitat for diverse flora and fauna. We are also increasing the amount of greenery on the airport grounds, and improving the surroundings to give airport users a feeling of comfort and relaxation. Seaweed bed and damselfish near airport Planting an olive tree 5 An airport coexisting with local region [Coexistence] We make an effort to have good communication with the local community and airport users, provide information to domestic and international users about environmental monitoring results and our environmental activities, and provide diverse opportunities to promote an understanding of airport activities.
