MN GreenStep Cities Best Practices 3
Study scale City wide versus organization data Edina St. Louis Park Falcon Heights 4
Original Scope of Work Establish the feasibility of this approach. Collect the last two years of data for benchmarking. Establish a process for collecting data for the next two years. Evaluate the specific best management practices (BMP) selected by each city and correlate them to the outcomes being measured. Produce a final report that measures each metric individually (i.e. kbtus, gallons, vehicle miles traveled, etc.) as well as in total dollars and tons of carbon. The report will include data on a per capita basis as well. 5
Units & Normalization BTUs Gallons VMT Energy Water Vehicle Miles Traveled Pounds Waste All can be converted to $ and CO 2 All can be normalized to population households and/or jobs 6

Conclusions We can measure community-wide data We can normalize by job, household and by population There is correlation to the GreenStep BMPs Energy is the largest part of the pie Commercial/Industrial consumption is greater than Residential Communities might be the best scale at which to deal with these units 21
Next Steps Work with the Regional Council of Mayors to collect this data for all cities in the metro Establish targets for each unit Include targets in comprehensive plans Establish a pilot to measure data in cities outside of the metro Use regional indicators to: Inform BPM choices Establish policy Obtain funding Verify outcomes 22
