The EC System complements the Stormwater Management StormFilter by generating consistent, high-quality effluent from higher-strength wastewater and, in many instances, does not require the use of chemicals. 2 INDUSTRIAL & REMEDIATION THE STORMWATER MANAGEMENT ELECTROCOAGULATION SYSTEM TM EC SYSTEM CELL OPERATION Pollutant removal in the EC System process begins when contaminated water is exposed to electrocytic cells. As water passes through these cells, it is exposed to a controlled electrical current and becomes charged. Once charged, the suspended contaminant particles bond together like small magnets and form larger masses. Any masses comprised of coagulated material are quickly removed, while masses comprised of heavy solids settle to the bottom. What is left is a clear phase of water with less contaminants. This process is effective on any size of suspended solids including sub-micron particles such as FEATURES The EC System process is highly effective on complex industrial waste water. 7 In Figure 1, waste water containing suspended solids (of any size) are charged through an electrolytic cell. Once charged, the particles bond together like small magnets and form mass. The emulsified petroleum elements will float while the heavy solids will settle to the bottom. What is left is a clear phase of water, less contaminants. This process is effective on any size of suspended solids including sub micron particles such as dye and log deck leachate. Figure 2 illustrates the Stormwater Management (EC System ) process with soap in the water. The effect that soap and detergents have on dirt and oil is to reduce the particle size causing a greater number of smaller particles/droplets to suspend in water. Since the EC System process is effective on any size particles/droplets, the same outcome is derived from waste water containing soap and detergents as in simple waste streams. This process provides clean water for recycle purposes without the risk of impacting screen, sand, and carbon filters. Applications: The EC System is highly effective on complex industrial waste water. It is a programmed technology, so no periodic maintenance is required. Any wetting agents (soaps, detergents) will remain in the water for reuse. It is an excellent technology for recycled water applications, as the suspended solids are removed from the water rather than passed through and allowed to build up in the clean (reuse) water tank. Its recommended placement is after the StormFilter or oil/water separator. It is effective on suspended solids (of any micron size), emulsified/suspended petroleum and heavy metals. It is recommended that a StormFilter or StormGate Separator be installed upstream of the EC System to remove the free oil.
8 General Flow Diagram for Generic Applications Using the Stormwater Management (EC System ) Reference document: Flow Diagram Influent tank: Water collects in the influent tank and is processed through the system by two process pumps. The pumps are managed by the Programmable Logic Controllers and use floats to detect the water level. ph is automatically adjusted in the influent tank using a digital ph controller. Cell Assembly: The water is processed through the system using a dual configuration. There are two sump pumps (1) located inside the influent tank. These pumps are elevated slightly off the bottom to prevent any heavy solids from entering the system. The pumps are managed by the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and floats are used to detect water levels. Water flows through electro-cells (2) to expose the water and contaminants to the EC System process. There are 2 banks of cells providing adequate charge to separate oil; grease, metals, and suspended solids. Separation Assembly: Once the contaminated water is charged, the water passes through a foam blocker/preclairfier (3). This process separates most of the contaminants and all of the foam accumulation. The dirty water and foam is sent to the sludge accumulation tank (6). Clean water is sent to the floc separation tank (4) where any remaining floc is removed from the clean water. The floc accumulates at the bottom of the tank (4). The floc accumulation is periodically pumped, under program control, to the sludge accumulation tank (6). Clean (reusable) water flows to the effluent tank (5). All of the pumps in the separation assembly are under program control. Effluent tank (clean tank): The effluent tank (5) receives clean water from the floc separation tank (4) and continues to fill until all the water is processed from the influent tank (1). Any excess water is sent to the evaporation system or discharged to sewer. There are floats in the effluent tank (5) to provide feedback to the PLCs. The entire operation is under program control. Pressure system: There are pressure pumps that pull from the effluent tank (5) to provide pressurized water to the pressure tank (8). Some systems will use submersible pumps. The pressure pumps provide water to the hose bibs/customer reuse water (9) was well as the ozone system (11) (if installed). The pressure tank (8) is a fiberglass wound tank(s) that will not corrode under the harsh conditions of ozone and recycled water. The pressure system provides 50 psi recycled water to the customer application.
9 Ozone Injection: Pressurized water from the pressure tank (8) passes through the ozone water injection unit (11). Here, ozone gas produced by the ozone generator is mixed with the water. The ozonated water is injected into the pre-clarifier tank (3). All of the water in the system is recycled through the ozonation process. This will prevent any bacterial buildup from occurring in any of the process tanks. The entire pressure system and ozonation process is managed by the PLCs under program control and requires on intervention. Evaporation system: There are floats in the influent tank (1) as well as the effluent tank (5) that monitor the liquid level and provide control for the entire system as well as the evaporator (12). The evaporator fills when water is ready for processing and shuts down when the water in the system is at a proper level. Sludge Accumulation Tank: Sludge accumulation from the system is pumped under program control to the sludge accumulation tank (6). This is where the sludge is dewatered and awaits disposal/removal. There are many variations to this process but in general, the system purges sludge automatically under program control. Control Panel: The control panels (12) are NEMA 4 enclosures that contain the required PLCs and automation equipment. In addition, the DC power supplies that provide the required DC voltage and current to the electrolytic cells that are housed beneath the control panel assembly. Summary: The EC System is completely automated and requires no preventative maintenance. The electrolytic cells are consumable items and require replacing periodically. In general, replacement is between 3 months and 1 year. The ongoing cost of operation is $0.002 to $0.005 per gallon ($2 to $5 per thousand gallons) and includes both electrical costs and cell replacements costs.
