12 ENVIRONMENT: Emissions Trucks are a source of fine particulates, carbon dioxide and dioxins but are not regulated Fewer truck miles are better Landfills emit methane, 14 times more potent than carbon dioxide; Landfill leachate must be collected and treated WTE emits small amounts of emissions, these are closely regulated Health Risk Studies in Montgomery County show no elevated toxins in local fish, meat or milk. This is consistent with findings in Spain.
13 ENVIRONMENT: Land and Water Use New Landfills require 600 acres for 30 years Leachate must be collected and treated Wells must be monitored for WTE Facility uses 25 acres and last for more than 40 years New regional facility will re-cycle wastewater No leachate
14 ENERGY Central Maryland is the epi-center of electricity congestion in the Mid-Atlantic Maryland Public Service Commission report Central Maryland s transmission system is clogged like the beltway at rush hour New energy sources need to be located near homes and businesses. Electricity from the new WTE Facility will be used to heat and light schools, offices, utilities in Carroll and Frederick County and save money.
15 This map shows the hourly price of electricity in the Mid Atlantic region on July 9, 2007 at 11:55 am. The price is highest in Central Maryland because of a lack of generation and congestion in transmission.
