The Quantum Energy Heating System Jamie Boyd, Glen Dimplex Northern Ireland
Who We Are Northern Ireland s leading distributor of appliances. Operating for over 30 years. Multi-brand distribution organisation Glen Dimplex NI take pride in the quality of both the service offered to its customers and its products. Specialising in: Heating Fires Cooking & Refrigeration Laundry & Dishwashing Small Domestic Appliances Commercial Appliances Audio Renewables Heat Recovery & Ventilation Showers
The Glen Dimplex Group World leader in intelligent electric heating and renewable energy solutions, as well as holding significant global market positions in domestic appliances, cooling and ventilation. Operates through 33 autonomous businesses throughout the world Employs c10,000 people Annual turnover 2bn Privately owned finances expansion from its own resources
Changing World of Electricity System Old Model and Perceptions Prosumers Centralised Generation Transmission Lines Enormous inherent inefficiencies and unnecessary costs Both Producers and Self Consumers
Decarbonisation of Electricity Renewable Penetration is Growing 5000 All-Ireland-November 2011 MW Non-Wind Generation Wind Generation Share 100% 75% 50% 50% Limit On grid 25% 24% wind in November 0 Time Source: Eirgrid Non-Wind % Wind %
Expected Renewables Generation 2020 Sources: DUKES (DECC, 2012), UK Renewable Energy Roadmap (DECC, 2009), UK National Renewable Energy Action Plan (2009)
Electric Heating on the Grid UK Grid on 7 December 2010 Electric Thermal Storage consumes more than 20% of all UK electricity today Making this 13GW connected load flexible provides substantial grid benefits Increased Renewable Energy Penetration Frequency response Ramping Intra-day load shifting Avoidance of grid and standby generation investment Actual - With electric thermal storage Estimated - Without electric thermal storage
The Challenge - The Requirement - Key Enablers Increased RES levels Electrification of key sectors Smart Grid Time of Use Meters with Flexible Domestic Tariffs Appropriat e Retail & Wholesale Market Structures Fit for purpose Grid Increased Interconnection Active Consumer Engagement Advanced Control Systems Intelligent Flexible Storage Devices Additional system complexity Smart Electric Thermal Storage System (SETS)
Glen Dimplex Partnerships The Introduction of Quantum
Introducing the Quantum Energy System
The Need for Development of Quantum Traditionally electric storage heaters offered consumers little or no control over the heat output into a room Leaks heat during the day and come the evening the house is cold and supplementary heating is often required Took a charge for the full 7 hours overnight regardless of the heat requirement for the next day
The Solution: Quantum Quantum is designed to use low-cost, low-carbon energy from renewable sources. It has the ability to store this energy during periods of low demand Creating cheap, efficient heat only when it is needed. The result: Optimal Efficiency Comfort Control
Quantum vs static storage heater
Future Proofed Technology The Quantum Energy System consists of: Quantum ultra-efficient electric space heater which is a unique, fully electronic highly controllable smart energy storage appliance Quantum hot water cylinder which is a class-leading self-learning adaptive smart energy storage water vessel
Smart Electric Thermal Storage: Key Features Consumer High efficiency energy store low losses Accurate electronic time and temperature control Up to 27% reduction in energy bills Advanced apps for user interaction and information Power System Overall Demand Reduction Reduction of demand during peak periods Increased System Flexibility Provision of Ancillary Services Facilitation of increased renewable electricity generation

HORIZON 2020 CALL FOR COMPETITIVE LOW CARBON ENERGY REALISING VALUE FROM ELECTRICITY MARKETS WITH LOCAL SMART ELECTRIC THERMAL STORAGE TECHNOLOGY
RealValue Introduction RealValue will use a combination of physical demonstration and modelling, in order to demonstrate how local small-scale energy storage, optimised across the EU energy system with advanced ICT, could bring benefits to all market participants. The expected total project cost is 15.5m (EC contribution approx. 12.0m) lasting 36 months The physical demonstration will consist of 1,250 homes in Ireland (circa 10GW installed capacity), Germany (circa 183GW installed capacity ) and Latvia (circa 2.65GW installed capacity). Current thinking: 700 homes in ROI 100 homes in NI 400 homes in Germany 50 homes in Latvia
