1 Biodiversity Conserva/on This work is supported by a National Science Foundation (NSF) collaboration between the Directorates for Education and Human Resources (EHR) and Geociences (GEO) under grant DUE
2 In this ac/vity, you will explore the current Sixth Ex/nc/on and biodiversity conserva/on. By the end, you should be able to: 1. Explain the impacts of humans on biological diversity. 2. Compare and contrast the causes and rates of the sixth ex/nc/on with previous mass ex/nc/ons from the fossil record. 3. Evaluate criteria for sefng species conserva/on priori/es. 4. Dis/nguish between ex situ and in situ conserva/on approaches.
3 What is Biodiversity Conserva/on? Maintaining the diversity of species, habitats, and the interrela/onships between organisms and the environment to keep ecosystems healthy and func/oning.
4 Why Should We Conserve Biodiversity? Biological Resources Food, fibers, medicine, wood products, etc. Ecosystem Services Decomposi/on of waste, pollina/on, water purifica/on, flood control, increased soil fer/lity, etc. Social & Spiritual Benefits Cultural and aesthe/c value, recrea/on & tourism, etc.
5 How: Ex Situ or In Situ Conserva/on? Ex situ: Conserva/on of the components of biological diversity off-site, or outside their natural surroundings. In situ: Conserva/on of species, habitats, or ecosystems on-site, or in their natural surroundings

7 Ex situ conserva/on Provides insurance policy and can play important role in recovery programs. Example: Przewalski s horse, na/ve to the steppes of Asia, went ex/nct in the wild ~1966. Cap/ve breeding of 13 individuals in zoos allowed the popula/on to rebound to >1,500 individuals and successful reintroduc/on in Mongolia. 9 SeFng Priori/es for Biodiversity Conserva/on It is impossible to ac/vely conserve all species because of limited /me and money. As a result, humans must make decisions about how to target conserva/on efforts so limited resources can have the greatest impact. So, how do we decide?
10 SeFng Priori/es Iconic or ambassador species (flagship species) Examples: Giant pandas, /gers, whales Large, land-demanding species (umbrella species) Oien large carnivores or migratory species Ecologically important species (keystone species and ecosystem engineers) Examples: Wolves, beavers, elephants Economic value/ecosystem goods or services Examples: honey bees, wetlands that filter water
11 Biodiversity SeFng Priori/es How many species are in the region? Endemism or dis/nc/veness Are there rare or endemic species in the area? Is it a unique habitat? Is it in country with few other reserves? Ex/nc/on risk How threatened is the species or habitat? (Least Concern, Near Threatened, Vulnerable, Endangered, Cri/cally Endangered, Ex/nct in Wild)
12 SeFng Priori/es Likelihood interven/on will be successful Rela/ve cost of conserving the par/cular species or habitat Cultural/aesthe/c/recrea/onal value Expected future changes to threats Will the proposed area s/ll support the species of concern if climate changes or human impacts in surrounding areas increase?
13 Evalua/ng Criteria Think about the criteria for 1-2 minutes. Write down the five criteria you think are most important for deciding which species or habitats to conserve.
14 Evalua/ng Criteria Form groups of 3-4 and share ideas. As a group, choose your top three priori/es and write a short jus/fica/on for each. Be prepared to share these with the class in ~5 minutes.
15 Applying Criteria You are members of Conserva/on World, a large interna/onal organiza/on that funds conserva/on projects. Your task is to evaluate the poten/al projects in your packet. Resources are limited, so you must choose one that you will recommend to the board of directors for funding. You must include a jus/fica/on for your recommenda/on. You will make your recommenda/on to the Board (class) in 15 minutes.
