Serving up a leaner, greener office.
Which hat(s) do you wear? The office manager concerned with skyrocketing print costs? The IT manager trying to reduce overhead? The administrator who handles printing supplies? The facilities manager charged with doing something to support the company s sustainability initiatives? All of the above?
Green habits are on the rise Campuses have conducted campus sustainability assessments (past 5 years), and hundreds more are planning to conduct them. (The Sustainability Movement in Higher Education: An Overview, 2008) 4/5 Big US cities report that sustainability is among their top five priorities. Only about one in six says it is not. (Living Cities Survey 2009) 63% of office workers exhibit green behaviors (Hansa GSR Green IT Survey, 2009) 5 10% more: that s what 41% of office purchasers will pay to work with a green vendor. However, 63% will not sacrifice performance for green. 85% of IT will buy green this year. (RackSpace 2008 Green Survey) 30% 25% 20% 15% 10% 5% 0% Green nonresidential construction market projected (U.S. Green Building Council 2010) Two thirds (64%) of green-minded companies, have adopted green purchasing policies to guide procurement. (Hansa GSR Green IT Survey, 2009)
Today s menu. Learn how to reduce the environmental footprint of your company s printing and document management processes. Discuss practical ways to create a greener workplace while cutting costs. Dig into Xerox s corporate sustainability commitments.
What best represents the environmental footprint of office printing? A. The number of cartridges sent to a landfill. B. Heat load of all the printers in the building. C. Air emissions from the electricitygenerating plants that power your printing devices. D. The total environmental burden including energy, greenhouse gases, solid waste across the life cycle of printing.
D. The total environmental burden including energy, greenhouse gases, solid waste across the life cycle of printing, including: Manufacturing Transporting Recovery & Disposal Green tip: Your product selection can reduce your environmental footprint and reduce costs.
Green ingredient: cartridge-free solid ink. Less to manufacture Less to transport Less to store Less to dispose of Reduced lifecycle energy smaller carbon footprint
The Solid Ink advantage: easy on the environment. 90% less waste ColorQube waste: 88 pounds Comparable Laser MFD: 815 pounds Total waste produced printing 22k pages per month over 4 year life
The Xerox ColorQube: One recipe for reducing your environmental footprint. Cartridge-free solid ink = 90%less waste. Reduced lifecycle energy and smaller carbon footprint over life. Prints vividly on environmentally preferable media ENERGY STAR qualified. Intelligent Ready learns usage patterns.
Consumes less energy across lifecycle. Emits less carbon dioxide. Results of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted on a ColorQube 9200 and a comparable color laser MFD. Results: 9% less life cycle energy. 10% smaller carbon footprint. The results? ColorQube has: 9% lower lifecycle energy 10% smaller carbon footprint Xerox conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the ColorQube 9200 color solid ink MFD (50 ppm) and a comparable color laser MFD (51 ppm). The study results were confirmed by the Rochester Institute of Technology
Green ingredient: a well-balanced approach to print deployment. Use a single device to perform multiple functions: Print Copy Scan Fax Means fewer devices and optimized resources. Office Optimization can help you earn LEED point credit. Green Tip: Optimize your print infrastructure to reduce your environmental footprint and reduce costs.
Green ingredient: office optimization saves four ways. Office Optimization Case Study* Reduced devices by more than half Energy reduction 27% Greenhouse gas reduction 26% Solid waste reduction 33% Cost reductions 34% *Xerox Sustainability Calculator Estimates Across the Life Cycle of the Devices
What represents the greater environmental burden of office printing? A. Supplies manufacturing and transport B. Generating the electricity to power the printing devices C. Print device manufacturing D. Paper manufacture, transport and disposal
D. Paper represents the largest environmental burden of office printing. Lifecycle energy use is 2 3 times that of all other activities associated with the life cycle of printing* But paper has many benefits: Renewable raw materials. Sustainably managed forests can offset carbon impacts. Paper is highly recyclable. *Based on Xerox life cycle assessments
A healthy office starts with healthy paper choices. Common grades include 30% recycled content Xerox equipment designed to work reliably with recycled paper ColorQube s solid ink color is brilliant on recycled paper Xerox sets strict environmental requirements for ALL its paper suppliers Xerox offers papers that are certified to responsible forest management standards: FSC, SFI and PEFC labeled papers
Slimming down to a less-paper office. Xerox customer cuts paper use Actions taken: Set printer default to duplex Green campaign print only what is needed Use Xerox earth-smart print driver settings Results*: 32% reduction in annual paper use $53K in annual savings *Across 20,000 employees; volume declines also contributed to reduction
Xerox and GreenPrint: reducing paper waste. An unlimited license of GreenPrint Enterprise software is free with every ColorQube MFP. * Eliminates printing unwanted pages such as urls or legal jargon
How much waste* is generated each year in the U.S.? A.104 million tons B. 179 million tons C. 254 million tons D.367 million tons *Municipal Solid Waste from residential and commercial entities.
C. In 2007, 254 million tons of solid waste were generated in the U.S. from residential and commercial entities. Bad news: That s 4.62 pounds per person per day. Good news: One third of that waste was recovered for recycling. Green tip: Follow the waste prevention hierarchy: reduce first, then reuse and recycle. Reference: US EPA Report: Municipal Solid Waste in the United States: 2007 Facts and Figures
Smarter ways to green. Energy Challenge 2012 targets a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by Green World Alliance. Optimized print infrastructure.
Better for your planet. Better for you. Long-life parts. Xerox Maintenance Assistant. Sustainability Calculator and Office Assessment Tools. We re continuously looking for new ways to meet our sustainability goals and benefit your business.
Seven healthy tips to green your workplace and cut costs. 1. Move to digital scan hardcopy, read, send and store digital documents. 2. Use paper wisely. 3. Recycle the paper you use. 4. Reach for ENERGY STAR. 5. Optimize! Replace older, stand-alone office products with fewer, more efficient multifunction systems. 6. Return print/copy cartridges for recycling or go cartridge-free with the ColorQube. 7. Seek office equipment designed for remanufacturing or recycling. For more information, please go to
