1 Customer Output Fleet Green Impact Analysis Toshiba wants our customers to understand just how green and environmental friendly their office environment can be. With an eye toward enhancing environmental sustainability, Toshiba has introduced our Encompass Green Report as a core ingredient of our Encompass Document Analysis program. During the fleet assessment process, detailed asset information is gathered such as locations, product models and types, equipment specifications, and usage to create an extensive report for the client. This same data is leveraged to pinpoint opportunities to reduce environmental impacts on paper consumption, power consumption; the emission of dust, carbon, ozone and other substances; and the volumes of solid and water waste produced. The report will measure the current environmental state and calculate the recommended state and resultant "earth savings" under an optimized state. Further, the report will present this information in a tabulated report as well as other best practices for reducing the eco-impact of printing and copying. It will promote the benefits of our products which are engineered with a lower environmental impact (less electricity usage, less CO2 emissions, ENERGY STAR compliant, and RoHS compliant) as well as highlight product features (duplex capabilities, omit blank page, super sleep mode, and energy management) while at the same time highlight the benefits of Toshiba's many environmental programs (used cartridge recycling, Close the Loop, and zero waste to landfill programs) The results can help our eco-conscious customers realize the significant cost savings and efficiencies that come from an optimized environment and, in doing so, meet their own green objectives as well. Toshiba s Green Report is only one of many environmental initiatives undertaken as part of Toshiba s Environmental Vision 2050, which aims to raise overall eco-efficiency to a factor of 10 by fiscal 2050.
2 Printing affects the environment. There s no way around it. What you print, the way you print and the number and types of machines you use to print documents all impact the earth. The energy consumed, the emissions being produced, and the processes used to make the paper, printers, and their accessories are also key environmental considerations when printing. The good news is that these effects are measurable and there are easy solutions available to help your company improve its eco citizenship. Let's take a look at the characteristics of printing and ways you can drastically reduce their negative impacts. Paper Save a tree. While companies explore ways Paper Sheets Per Year 4,255,886 to green their printing, lowering their paper Paper Lbs Per Year 42, consumption is one of the best and often most overlooked ways to reduce waste. Total Number of Trees Consumed Per Year The average U.S. office worker consumes about 240 reams of paper each year, or about.6 tons. While it is difficult to determine the exact number of trees required to produce this amount of office paper, let's assume a ratio of about 3 to 4 times the amount of tree wood per amount of finished paper. The average U.S. office worker's printing requirement then consumes around two tons of trees annually. As you can see, there are significant green opportunities in your printing and other paper-dependent processes. This table calculates your current annual paper usage in sheets and pounds, and estimates the number of trees that were cut down to produce this paper. The ability to quantify your paper use in the first step in helping users become aware of, and improving upon, their printing habits. In addition to reducing your paper usage, the use of eco-friendly paper can reduce the number of trees needed to manufacture the paper, resulting in a reduction in the water and chemicals needed for production. As you can see, using less paper has quite the positive trickle-down effect. Electrical Consumption and CO2 Emissions Less is more. Less paper being produced means less energy is being consumed and the more eco-friendly and efficient your organization. Reducing the amount of printing and number of devices leads to additional savings in energy consumption. Power (kwh) per Year Co2 Emissions (lbs) per Year 31, , This table calculates how much energy is being consumed by your print devices and the associated CO2 emissions based on the model type, technology, and average number of pages printed. We all produce carbon dioxide emissions, either directly or indirectly, each time we operate a piece of office equipment. s, copiers, and other office equipment emit CO2 into the atmosphere which leads to global warming and climate change.
3 Electrical Consumption and CO2 Emissions Waste Water Produced from Paper Consumption (gal) 398, Annual Paper Solid Waste (lbs) 48, Total Number of Print Cartridges Consumed per Year Total Paper and Cartridge Solid Waste (lbs) per Year Solid Waste Impact of Disposed Cartridges (lbs) , Replacing older or end-of-life print devices with more efficient ones can save on power and reduce your carbon footprint. Toshiba devices are equipped with energy-saving features such as auto shut-off and sleep modes, which conserve electricity and compiles with the EPA ENERGY STAR program. This is yet another area where your office can make significant changes that reduce greenhouse gases while protecting the environment and, in many cases, save money. A by-product of reduced paper consumption is less energy consumed by paper production and less waste disposal, air emissions, wastewater, and solid waste. The table above calculates how much wastewater and solid waste are being expended on the number of pages being printed and cartridges used. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, paper making accounts for nearly one-half of the paper industry's energy use. The process uses large amounts of waste and electricity, and generates a significant solid waste stream. Annual Paper Costs $25, Annual Electricity Costs $3, Further, it releases a variety of air and water pollutants. In addition, the fewer cartridges disposed of, means less products diverted to waste disposal sites. In North America, over 350 million cartridges per year are discarded in our landfills, and this number increases by 12 percent each year. The Economic Costs of Inefficient Document Output You can't manage what you can't measure. While most companies are aware that a log of paper is being used, it is not as likely they are aware of the actual amounts. As shown in the table above, we measure the true costs of your printing operation in terms of paper usage and power consumed at the device. The savings realized by a more efficient document management strategy translates into positive effects on the environment. Best Practices for Reducing the Eco Impact of Printing Think before you print. 4 How do I look now? Once we know what needs to be changed, we can quantify the positive results of an optimized printing environment. The data below will enable you to compare specific energy and environmental data of your current state to results achieved through fleet assessments and optimization. Earth Savings Meets Cost Savings The results you can achieve through an optimized print environment are as kind to the earth as they are to your bottom line. We measure your overall savings associated with the number of trees, Co2 emissions, water and wastewater, and solid waste. Hard dollar cost savings are in the form of less paper and energy consumed. Earth Savings Users can see how much they have saved and how that equates to reducing the impact to the environment. Understanding the consumption and waste associated with printing provides an opportunity for you to make significant progress towards environmental stewardship in the workplace. Through an optimized print environment, you will realize not only cost savings but also make a contribution to a greener earth. This is a core initiative of Toshiba's Managed Print Services Program in saving you money, reducing energy and waste, and minimizing your environmental footprint. About the Calculations Toshiba s Green Calculator presents a detailed environmental profile of your printer fleet in the IS state and TO BE state. The calculator is populated with information about your current printers such as model name and segment, technology, quantity, and paper volumes while factoring in research data on energy use, trees consumed, volumes of solid and wastewater produced and the amount of CO2 emissions. The findings are then delivered in a quantitative report. Following optimization, the calculator will present the new data for comparision purposes and as recommendations for using less paper and energy and reducing waste. All Calculations are derived from statistics from sources including: US Department of Energy, InfoTrends, Gartner, Lawerence Berkley National Labratory, Swiss Centre for Lifecycle Intentories, and many other agencies. A list of complete sources and calculations can be provided upon written request to Toshiba America Business Solutions.
