The delay is proportional to the amount of oxygen present. This time delay can also be expressed as a phase shift between the wave patterns of incident blue light and the fluoresced red light. In the first graph, Optical Response with Zero Oxygen, there is little delay between the trough of the blue excitation light and the emitted red fluorescent light.
