In March, AcuComm reported on 118 new projects in the waste industry, in 44 different countries around the world. These projects had a value of US$7,104 million, equating to an average of US$134 million per project. In terms of value, the biofuel and biogas areas were the leading categories in March, between them accounting for 61% of all reported values. This was to some degree due to a major Swedish biogas project worth over US$2 billion, due for completion in The leading waste type for March was biomass, accounting for 31% of projects and 61% of reported values. This was followed by municipal solid waste with 22% of projects and 17.5% of reported values. The leading countries in terms of numbers reported were the, UK and France, which between them accounted for over 40% of the total. Sweden, as mentioned above, was the leader in terms of value, followed by Finland, the and the UAE. Issue 001, March 2014 Statistical highlights 118 new waste projects identified in March 2014, with a total identifiable value of US$7,104 US$7, million. The accounted for 23 new projects in March. In value terms, the accounted for US$850 million for the month. Sweden was the leading country for project value in March, followed by Finland, the and UAE. Nine non-biomass biomass waste-to-energy waste projects were reported in March, with a value of US$166 million. The average erage value of a waste project in March was US$134 million. For incineration projects the figure was a little lower at US$81 million. Biofuel and biogas projects are considerably larger on average, at US$219 million and US$427 million respectively. All projects in WISM are derived from our Waste Business Finder. You can find more details on it on the back page. Summaries and links to further information, information including contact details, regarding all the projects covered this month are at the back of this issue. Questions, comments and suggestions are very welcome; send me an at the address below. Likewise, if you have a project you would like to see covered, then send it in and we will add it to our database. 2 AcuComm AcuComm is an independent UK-based research company dedicated to identifying and publishing plant construction, equipping and extension projects in the global waste management industry. Importantly for our customers, we put projects into their operating context with market analysis and trend forecasting of key city/urban waste markets. About Waste Business Finder AcuComm s Waste Business Finder is a daily-updated subscription service which provides immediate access to essential data on plant developments and refurbishments in Energy from Waste, Biofuels and Recycling plus much more around the world. Presented with an easy to use yet powerful search function you can easily find projects of most interest and stay abreast of the fast changing waste management development sector worldwide. About Waste Management Reports Our reports and fact files provide statistics, trends and forecasts that really inform those looking to understand waste marketplaces. We use primary source data and, where possible, standardise it to provide comparative figures. Using proven forecasting methodology informed by real market developments we then present a range of forecast options for key indicators. It not all figures! Depending on the subject and report type, our investigation will identify installed plant, current disposal methods and includes a ranking of opportunity. Why is AcuComm important to your organisation? As the world s population expands and economic development encourages wider consumer and industrial activity, so the problem of dealing with the resulting waste grows. It has been identified as one of the key environmental and social challenges for both established and emerging countries and investment into efficient waste management systems is rapidly expanding. As landfill becomes environmentally unacceptable and as the number and capacity of sites matures, new systems which recycle waste and/or incinerate waste for power generation are rising in importance and value. Accurate business intelligence is vital therefore for anyone who builds, equips, operates or services waste management plants. Waste management plants require considerable infrastructure to make them efficient and that means opportunities across a number of equipment supply and service sectors. In addition, AcuComm covers new and emerging technologies making it the ideal way to track test/pilot sites. To view all of AcuComm s services visit
