2 General Particulate superabsorbent polymers (superabsorbents, SAP) are well known for their capability to absorb and retain many times their own weight in aqueous liquids. BASF, as a leading manufacturer of superabsorbents, has further developed superabsorbent technology to immobilize the polymer on a fabric (nonwoven) material. The resulting superabsorbent fabric Luquafleece combines the strong absorption capacity of a highly functional superabsorbent and the numerous advantages of roll-good, nonwoven materials. 3 Luquafleece has been developed to provide benefits beyond those of established absorbent materials. Based on proprietary BASF technology, Luquafleece is characterized by the immobilization of superabsorbent polymer through the strong mechanical interaction between the fiber and the superabsorbent allowing for high polymer loading. This translates into superior functionality compared to other absorbent materials by offering advantages in terms of abrasion stability and absorption capacity. 4 Applications The unique product features of Luquafleece enable its use in a broad range of applications in various industries by addressing the different functionalities of Luquafleece : Water retention Climate control Versatility Water Retention The intrinsic feature of a superabsorbent to absorb large amounts of water enables Luquafleece to be used wherever handling of aqueous liquids is required such as in medical or geotextile applications. When applied as a geotextile material, the unique properties of Luquafleece not only provide high water storage capacity ( up to 25 l/m 2 ) but also offer additional advantages: Homogeneous water storage layer Application of superabsorbent materials in non-horizontal configurations Prolonged bioavailability of water The Luquafleece technology can also be adapted to medical applications such as wound care, medical drapes, and protective clothing. 4

Due to its ability to cyclically absorb and release large quantities of moisture, it can maintain the humidity of the environment at a comfortable level. This positions Luquafleece as a lightweight, functional material for climate control. 5

6 The unique characteristics of Luquafleece offer advanced climate control for various applications such as automotive, functional textiles, furniture and bedding, architecture, and packaging. New challenges The immobilization of superabsorbents by the Luquafleece technology offers access to functions beyond absorption and climate control. One example is the use of the swelling behavior of Luquafleece, triggered by water absorption, to design a membrane device such as VayuVerde [IQTEX] which acts as a sealant in contact with water.
