Environmentally Preferable Purchasing March 27, 2008
Purchasing Impacts Every purchase has an impact on human health and the environment Federal, state and local governments are large consumers of goods and services 20% of U.S. consumption
EPP Definition Environmentally Preferable Products Products that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products that serve the same purpose. This comparison may consider raw materials acquisition, production, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, reuse, operation, maintenance, or disposal of the product.
EPP Environment + Price + Performance = EPP
Environmental Attributes Recycled content Less toxic Resource efficient Saves energy/water/air emissions More durable Recyclable
Benefits of EPP Fiscally Responsible Perform Well Save Money and Resources Lower disposal costs Less maintenance Durable Worker Health and Safety Less toxic Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Obstacles Users are unfamiliar with new/different products Lack of standards Product must be economical and effective Change takes time How do you rank environmental preferability?
Misleading Terms Eco-safe Environmentally friendly Earth smart Environmentally safe Essentially non-toxic Degradable Biodegradable CFC-free Ozone friendly Recyclable A recent study of 1,018 "green" products from big-box box stores has found That all but one was marketed with false or misleading eco-claims. claims. (Terrachoice Environmental Marketing, 2007)
