1 Ecole Connaught Community School Welcomes CaGBC Sask Chapter Members & Colleagues

2 Who we Are as the Comets We are a Dual Track French Immersion School and with an enrollment of 435 students, 43 staff and a 51 seat Daycare. We occupy 5304 m2 of building that is situated where the original 102 year Connaught once stood. The school construction period was 610 days and was built at a total cost of $21,219, Our General Contractor was Quorex Construction. Our Architect was NumberTEN Architectural Group and CITE360 Studio

3 Key Green Features of our School are: We are designed to meet LEED Silver standards and point requirements and will be applying for our very own plaque and certification in the months coming. 4 Daylighting and Views Our students and staff are connected to the outdoors with over 90% of spaces having a view to the outdoors. Operable windows are also installed throughout the building to improve occupant comfort.

5 Daylighting and Views The second floor overhangs the lower classrooms to provide a sun shade.

6 Waste Water Reduction At our school, we have installed high efficiency taps, toilets and showers to reduce our potable water consumption. With these low flow plumbing fixtures, we have managed to reduce save approximately 480,000 litres of water a year, or the equivalent of 960,000 water bottles.

7 Flooring We have installed carpets meeting the CRI Green Label Plus program requirements and vinyl and rubber that are Floor Score certified. The extensive use of terrazzo flooring provides an extremely durable and inert flooring material. By using products certified our flooring provides a high indoor air quality with fewer harmful toxins.

8 Carpooling Our building has special designated parking spaces for those who carpool or drive high efficiency vehicles. By promoting carpooling, we are reducing the amount vehicles on the road with a single person and therefore reducing pollution created from automobile use.

9 Bike Racks Bike racks have been provided for students, staff and visitors to our school. Showers have also been provided staff, encouraging them to bike to work. By promoting biking to school, we are promoting an alternative mode of transportation, helping to reduce pollution and land development impacts from automobile use.

10 Refrigerant Reduction Our building does not use any CFC based refrigerants to cool the building. CFC refrigerants are harmful to the earth s ozone layer when released and are a contributing factor in ozone depletion.

11 Displacement Ventilation The mechanical design in the entire school, excluding the daycare, utilizes displacement ventilation. This is a high efficiency approach to providing the air you breathe inside the building.

12 Building Envelope Our school is encompassed in an efficient, high performing building envelope that keeps our building warm in the winter and cool in the summer. In addition to the incorporation of original artifacts, the building façade is a mix of clay masonry, tyndall stone accents and metal siding.

13 Radiant Heating & Occupant Comfort We use radiant tubing to both heat and cool the school. These systems heat or cool surfaces rather than air. The warm or cool surfaces then radiate heat to occupants. Our building also provides optimal thermal comfort control.

14 Light Tubes Light tubes or solar tubes have become the ideal solution for lighting interiors in a costeffective, energy-efficient and eco-friendly way. They significantly reduce the need for electricity while keeping people connected to the outdoor environment.

15 Energy Use During the design of our school, we strived to reduce the energy consumed for building operation. By installing: high efficiency lighting Occupancy sensors Daylight harvesting Radiant heating and cooling A well-insulated building envelope, our energy cost savings are estimated at over 40%.

16 Recycled and Regional Materials Over 20% of the materials (by cost) used throughout the building were made from recycled materials. For example; Structural steel used to build the building was created by melting down steel scraps leftover from the construction of other buildings. Recycled and repurposed materials have a longer expected life than traditional materials and reduce land fill mass. Over 30% of the materials (by cost) used throughout the building were manufactured within 800 kilometers of Regina. By sourcing materials locally, transportation from the manufacturing plant to the site has been reduced as well as the associated pollution.

17 Low-Emitting Materials All adhesives, sealants, paints and coatings used in our school have a low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) content, reducing the amount of contaminants found in the air our staff and students breathe.

18 Landfill Waste Diversion During the construction of our school, waste was carefully sorted on site and recycled to divert waste from Regina s landfills. Over the course of our 2 year construction period, we diverted over 280 metric tonnes or 70% of our metal, concrete, wood and other waste from landfills. This weight diversion equates to the weight of about 125 adult bison metric tonnes of waste removed throughout the site. 19 Open Space Over 4,500 m² of our site has been left as vegetated open space, about the size of 2 NHL hockey rinks. We have also agreed to keep this space open for the life of the building, supporting community gardens and ecofriendlydevelopment

20 Landscaping and Irrigation All the landscaping planted at our school is native and drought tolerant. Our plants do not require a permanent irrigation system, fertilizers or pesticides in order to survive in our climate. This eliminates the need for installing an irrigation system, reducing our water consumption.

21 Green Cleaning Program Our school has implemented a green cleaning program which reduces the staff and student s exposure to harmful cleaning chemicals. Exposure to harmful cleaning chemicals can cause eye, skin and respiratory irritation.

22 Low Mercury Lighting Through a reduction and selection in low mercury lighting We have installed LED light fixtures throughout.

23 Commissioning Commissioned buildings realize high energy efficiency, achieved environmental goals, and improved indoor air quality; plus the benefits of a properly trained team. Performing commissioning can ensure this is done thru. Starting during the design stage, Performs peer reviews and identifies any issues. Then during construction, Functional testing is performed to verify systems are operating properly. The LEED rating system has made commissioning a mandatory requirement and provides additional recognition for an extended commissioning scope of work.

24 Measurement & Verification Measurement and Verification (M&V) is a crucial component of ensuring a sustainable building is performing as expected during operation It provides: A calibrated energy model a computer simulation of the building, is created and the utility bills for natural gas, electricity and water Analysis, on the building s performance. Opportunities for operational improvements can also be identified over the lifetime of the building
