Nuclear Energy Market Overview Tony Robinson Senior Vice President, Customer Accounts & Government Affairs May 12, 2017
Nuclear Performance in the U.S. Nuclear energy provides reliable, efficient, and emission-free baseload energy production p.2
U.S. Nuclear Fleet Overview The largest nuclear fleet in the world and one of the most diverse fleets 99 operating nuclear units 19% of U.S. electricity generation 30 U.S. states operating nuclear reactors 22 nuclear operators, with 4 utilities operating more than 6 units: Exelon (23), Entergy (9), Duke (11), NextEra (8) PWR and BWR reactors from 4 different OEMs (Westinghouse, GE, Combustion Engineering, B&W) Different generations of reactors, plants having been mainly built from 70s to 90s Reactor lifetimes already extended to 60 years for most plants (8 applications under review) First plants will reach 60 years old in 2029 Source: EIA (2013), NRC p.3
U.S. Nuclear Plant License Extensions Effects on U.S. Suppliers of 80-Year Plant Life p.4
New Reactors on the Horizon Pre-application Activities: Numerous Gen IV projects are in early development stages Many utilities and investors continue to see the value and energy diversity benefits provided by the nuclear generation p.5
Next Generation for Nuclear Energy supply diversity and environmental demands continue to drive interest in next-generation nuclear - only viable energy source that provides baseload power 24x7 with no greenhouse emissions p.6
Favorable View of Nuclear Energy more recent research Public Opinion Index from NEI intended to summarize different dimensions of attitudes about nuclear energy in a single number or index score that can be tracked over time to measure change. Index is the average of 9 measures that range from attitudes to perceptions on benefits, safety, and waste. The measures are equally weighted. *Measure is from a separate nationally representative survey of 1,000 U.S. adults, Fall 2016, by Bisconti Research, Inc. p.7
Economic Benefits of Nuclear Energy Nuclear energy strengthens state and local economies through jobs, taxes, and direct and secondary spending The 99 nuclear reactors in the U.S. generate substantial domestic electricity sales $40- $50 billion each year with over 100,000 workers contributing to production p.8
Economic Benefits of Nuclear Energy On average, a nuclear energy facility generates $470 million in sales in the local community and nearly $40 million in total labor income annually Each year, a nuclear energy facility pays on average about $67 million in federal taxes and $16 million in state and local taxes crucial revenue that benefits schools, programs and other infrastructure p.9
Nuclear Power Economic Energy Engine of the Carolinas In 2015 N.C. s five reactors supported 32% of state s electricity usage In 2015 S.C. s seven reactors supported 52% of state s electricity usage Two new reactors currently under construction and two more under construction near the South Carolina- Georgia border ** Data referenced and fully credited to 2013 study report: Clemson University, the Carolinas Nuclear Cluster and E4Carolinas Inc. p.10
Nuclear Power Economic Energy Engine of the Carolinas N.C. ranked fifth in the nation in net electricity generation from nuclear power in 2015, producing 5.3% of the nation's total One of the world s largest concentrations of nuclear energy service companies exists along the Charlotte/Columbia corridor approximately 170 Carolina companies and organizations with a nuclear energy interest ** Data referenced and fully credited to 2013 study report: Clemson University, the Carolinas Nuclear Cluster and E4Carolinas Inc. p.11
Introduction to A broad portfolio of products and services for the U.S. and international nuclear fleet: Outage Services Non-Destructive Examinations Component Repair & Replacement Engineering Nuclear Fuel Fabrication, Engineering and Services Instrumentation and Control Systems Spare Parts p.12
U.S. Office Locations In North America, employs 2,350 p.13
Focus on the Future for Nuclear Committed to supporting the Delivering the Nuclear Promise initiative: Advancing safety, reliability and economic performance for the U.S. nuclear fleet Multiyear strategy to transform the industry and ensure its future viability Advanced fuel technologies Enhanced Accident-Tolerant Fuel (EATF) AREVA is partnering with U.S. Department of Energy, national labs, utilities, and universities to develop the next generation of nuclear fuel We lead in the supply of Enhanced Accident Tolerant Fuel (EATF) assemblies as part of the U.S. Department of Energy s EATF program. Joint venture with Lightbridge to develop and commercialize innovative metallic nuclear fuel Small modular reactor support Recently supported NuScale Power Design Certification Application to the NRC Providing testing, fuel design, licensing and engineering support to reach this major milestone for new nuclear technology Next Generation of Nuclear Plants Member of NGNP industry alliance to commercialize high temperature gas reactor In France, AREVA supports CEA development of advanced sodium fast reactor Fuel fabrication studies and testing for TerraPower sodium fast reactor p.14
