1 Environmental Performance 211 UPM Chapelle Darblay
2 upm Chapelle Darblay UPM Chapelle Darblay is one of the 23 paper mills in the group. Situated near Rouen, France s main forest harbour, Chapelle Darblay has an ideal setting: near to large urban centres for its raw materials (Paris is 13 km away), access to Paris by waterway, with quick access to European capitals by road and railway, and open to the major export market because of its proximity to the sea. The UPM group is divided into three areas of activity: Energy & pulp, Engineered materials and Paper. Our mill, which belongs to Paper business group, manufactures white and colour newsprint made from 1% recycled fibres. Chapelle Darblay, through its 45 contracts with local authorities, collects 5, tonnes of newspapers and magazines per year from 3 million people. 3 The EMAS environmental declaration from the UPM group comprises a company-wide section (which can be found on our website and individual brochures for each mill. This brochure relates to the site at Chapelle Darblay and covers the year 21. The UPM group s next EMAS environmental declaration will be published during 212. Commitment for Chapelle, Docelles and Stracel mills in 212 A forerunner in the new forest industry, UPM leads the integration of bio and forest industry to a new and sustainable future that is founded on innovation. Cost leadership, ability to change, our employees involvement and safety are the corner stones of our success. Following the vision and values of the UPM group, our three mills aimto be leaders in their product ranges, and to become the industrial reference in terms of safety. Therefore, each year, we define our strategic objectives (S-Imple) and our action plans according to the following key principles: Customer oriented High-performing people Cost leadership Profitable growth. On a day-to-day basis, with a common approach to the continuous improvement of quality, health and safety, and environmental aspects involving all employees, our mills work specifically towards the following aims: managing health and safety risks and pollution issues, more specifically seeking to reduce the number of accidents in the workplace and while travelling, by introducing preventative measures and systematically analysing all incidents listening our customer s needs and acquiring market knowledge in order to develop our product s reange complying with legislation and fulfilling the requirements of stakeholders complying e with environmental policy and the group s Code of Conduct conducting engagement surveys among employees monitoring performance indicators on a regular basis ensuring cooperation between sites, developing team work with new shared working environments Timo Heinonen, Philippe Pinard and Jean Kubiak, on behalf of the management boards at the three sites UPM, Chapelle Darblay, Environmental Performance 211 3
4 Achievements and Objectives Achievements was an excellent year regarding effluent treatment plant performance, specially the net improvement in BOD and COD results in emissions into the Seine. In 211 we have achieved a good reduction in water consumption, due to the efforts of the two production lines as well as an investment in October 211. Furthermore, the closure of the cooling circuits on the condensing turbine led to a reduction of more than 25 m 3 /h. For energy, both the energy saving campaign (ESC) launched by the UPM group, as well as the commitment of mill staff, continue to bear fruit. The investment made at the end of 21 in order to restart the condensing turbine proved its value in terms of energy efficiency in 211. Targets 212 In 212,we will focus on continually reducing our waste water emissions, and continuing performance of the effluent treatment plant and sludge treatment. Within this framework, the following projects are under consideration: Installation of a COD sensor in line with the effluents Installation of a turbidimeter at the exit to the primary tank Removal of a proportion of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients upon entry to the treatment plant Increasing the sludge treatment capacity Additionally, during the main shut-down of the mill in May 212, important work will be carried out to ensure the efficient operation of the treatment plant. The fourth wave of the energy saving campaign has also been launched by the group. Chapelle Darblay is taking an active part in this latest wave. Our main target: to reduce our impact on the environment Environmental matters are taken into account in every step of the manufacturing process. Our objective is to reduce the impact of our activities on the environment. Informing and raising awareness among all our stakeholders is another part of our environmental approach. For several years we have therefore published an annual environmental declaration, which is circulated widely among UPM employees, local authorities and governments, local associations, customers and suppliers, and other stakeholders. We are carrying out our activities in compliance with all applicable legal requirements for the protection of the environment. 4 UPM, Chapelle Darblay, Environmental Performance 211
5 Air/Energy Air Our air emissions (dust, CO, NOx, SO 2, HCl, HF and COT) from the biomass boiler are continuously checked using automatic analysers. To validate these checks and to verify the conformity of our waste with regulation, an accredited external body conducts a full analysis of the exhaust gases twice a year. The low use of our gas furnaces and our gas turbine allows us to limit greenhouse gas emissions as far as possible. Energy Chapelle Darblay has been producing paper from recycled fibres for two decades. In 1999, with the construction of its new line of deinked pulp, our mill has been able to definitively end its processing of thermomechanical pulp, which consumes a huge amount of electricity. As a result, the mill has been able to reduce its electricity consumption by half. In 23, the French government decided to launch an invitation for tenders for producing electricity from biomass. The aim of this invitation for tenders and those that followed is to increase the proportion of renewable energies in France. With support from the UPM group, Chapelle Darblay decided to participate in this programme and its file was accepted by the French energy regulation commission (CRE). Our new biomass boiler came into operation in 27 as a result. The biomass that is burnt originates from our own sludge from the deinking and paper manufacturing processes, and from reclaimed wood (pallets, wood chips, composting residue). The steam that is produced is expanded by a turbo alternator set that generates electricity and supplies our mill for paper manufacture. 6 Water/Waste Water Approximately 5 litres of water are required to produce a sheet from one kilogram of fibres. This quantity of water serves essentially as a carrier for the paper fibres and is mainly recycled. A pumping station, equipped with three pumps, draws water from the Seine. A portion of this water is filtered and purified in the effluent plant equipped with a primary clarifier and sand filters. This water is used in the deinking pulp process and on paper machines. The remainder, coarsely filtered, is essentially used for cooling steam exchangers. The water from our process is fully treated by our effluent treatment plant. Reducing our effluent and improving its quality are among our mill s primary objectives. Waste Our policy is to reduce waste as much as possible at source, then sort and recycle or use it. The waste, divided into 31 groups, is sorted on site and goes through agreed procedures. The sludge from paper process, particularly from deinking, is used internally in the biomass boiler. Fly ash from combustion and the recycling waste from the sand from the boiler are put through material recovery procedures (civil engineering, land spreading, inerting etc..). The ash is subject to a certification approach that started with pre-registration in the European file, REACH. Hazardous waste is handled by BSDD (hazardous waste tracking note) then sent to the appropriate processes.
