4 1 Introduction, herein referred to as Boral, owns and operates a roof tile manufacturing plant and clay mine on Tooheys Road East, Bushells Ridge, New South Wales The facility operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Boral holds NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Environmental Protection Licence (EPL) The Scheduled Activities in the EPL include ceramic works and mining for minerals. Quarterly groundwater sampling was performed on 4 April 2018 at the Envirocycle Inlet, Envirocycle Dam, Piezo 1, Piezo 2 and Piezo 3. The monitoring was performed as requested by Boral and in line with the Environmental Management System (EMS) in place at Boral. This report outlines the results of the quarterly groundwater monitoring for April 2018, and the monthly scrubber waste monitoring performed. 2 Site Identification Boral operates a roof tile manufacturing plant and clay mine on Tooheys Road East, Bushells Ridge, New South Wales The plant vicinity and location of monitoring points are presented in Figure 2-1 below. Figure 2-1: site vicinity and location of monitoring points MJM Environmental Pty Ltd 12 April 2018 Page 4 of 15
5 3 Sampling Methodology The sampling was performed in accordance with ANZECC monitoring standards (AS/NZS :1998 and AS/NZS :1998). These procedures include the name and location of the sample point, date and time of sample collection, the type of sample point, water level within sample point, method of sample collection, depth of sampling and sample appearance at the time of collection. Groundwater samples were collected using a plastic bailer. The bailer was lowered into the sample points using a rope and allowed to fill with groundwater. The first three samples from each point were discarded. This was to remove any material in the bailer, minimise cross contamination and to ensure the supernatant groundwater at the top of the bore was not sampled. The water samples were then transferred into appropriate bottles provided by a NATA accredited laboratory. Samples were placed immediately into an esky to avoid heat and sunlight, and taken directly to the laboratory. A certificate of analysis is presented in Appendix A and the field notes for the sampling work completed are presented in Appendix B. 4 Results 4.1 Groundwater The quarterly groundwater monitoring results for 4 April 2018 are presented in Table 4-1. 13 5 Discussion Quarterly groundwater monitoring was performed on 4 April 2018 at the Envirocycle Inlet, Envirocycle Dam, Piezo 1, Piezo 2 and Piezo 3. The monitoring was performed as requested by Boral and in line with the Environmental Management System (EMS) in place at Boral. During the April 2018 sampling, metals concentrations at Piezo 1 exceeded the Groundwater Investigation Levels (GILs) for Copper and Zinc. Piezo 2 metals concentrations exceeded the GILs for Chromium (if confirmed as Cr[VI]), Copper and Zinc. Piezo 3 metals concentrations exceeded the GILs for Boron, Copper and Zinc. The Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Coliforms concentrations for the Envirocycle Dam have increased since the last quarter. It is noted that during the April 2018 monitoring a representative of Boral informed MJM that the Envirocycle Dam s circulation pump had been isolated due to maintenance requirements. Therefore a sample was unable to be taken from the usual monitoring point, and a sample was instead taken from the surface of the Envirocycle Dam. The surface of the Envirocycle dam had plant matter and algae present. All remaining results were within the applied guideline limits, where applicable. 16 Page : 2 of 3 Work Order : ES Client : MJM ENVIRONMENTAL PTY LTD Project : General Comments The analytical procedures used by the Environmental Division have been developed from established internationally recognized procedures such as those published by the USEPA, APHA, AS and NEPM. In house developed procedures are employed in the absence of documented standards or by client request. Where moisture determination has been performed, results are reported on a dry weight basis. Where a reported less than (<) result is higher than the LOR, this may be due to primary sample extract/digestate dilution and/or insufficient sample for analysis. Where the LOR of a reported result differs from standard LOR, this may be due to high moisture content, insufficient sample (reduced weight employed) or matrix interference. When sampling time information is not provided by the client, sampling dates are shown without a time component. In these instances, the time component has been assumed by the laboratory for processing purposes. Where a result is required to meet compliance limits the associated uncertainty must be considered. Refer to the ALS Contact for details. Key : MF = membrane filtration CAS Number = CAS registry number from database maintained by Chemical Abstracts Services. The Chemical Abstracts Service is a division of the American Chemical Society. LOR = Limit of reporting ^ = This result is computed from individual analyte detections at or above the level of reporting ø = ALS is not NATA accredited for these tests. ~ = Indicates an estimated value. CFU = colony forming unit Microbiological Comment: In accordance with ALS work instruction QWI-MIC/04, membrane filtration result is reported an approximate (~) when the count of colonies on the filtered membrane is outside the range of cfu. Membrane filtration results for MW006 are reported as an estimate (~) due to the presence of many non-target organism colonies that may have inhibited the growth of the target organisms on the filter membrane. It may be informative to record this fact. MW006 is ALS's internal code and is equivalent to AS
