2 The Sustainable Energy For All Initiative Launch: September 2011 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon The 2030 Goals: 1. Ensure universal access to modern energy services. 2. Double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency. 3. Double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

3 The Global District Energy in Cities Initiative In 2013, UNEP initiated research and surveyed low-carbon cities to identify key factors underlying their success in scaling up efficiency and renewables Technical research and stakeholder consultations undertaken by UNEP in the context of the SE4ALL Energy Efficiency sub-committee District Heating emerged as a best-practice intervention to provide a local, affordable and low-carbon energy supply Based on this success, UNEP and its partners are now launching the start phase of the Global District Energy in Cities Initiative 3

4 Context: UNEP s Work on the SE4ALL Accelerator Platform District Energy Support national & municipal governments to develop or scale up district energy systems Lighting, Appliances & Equipment Global market transformation to efficient lighting, appliances & equipment Buildings Promote sustainable building policies & practices worldwide Transport Improve the fuel economy capacity of the global car fleet To achieve the SE4ALL goal on energy efficiency, the activities are bundled under five Energy Efficiency Accelerators UNEP implements projects under each of the five Energy Efficiency Accelerators The programme on district energy was newly established in 2014

7 The Global District Energy in Cities Initiative The Global District Energy in Cities Initiative is a multistakeholder partnership with aims accelerate their transition to low- carbon and climate resilient societies through modern district energy systems. The initiative will leverage the pool of expertise across its partners to: INCREASE awareness on the potential of district energy and its role in achieving multiple benefits, showcase good practices and successful efforts globally; PROMOTE and strengthen local and national policies and enabling environments, including by identifying and overcoming barriers, enhancing capacity, and mobilizing support; ENCOURAGE the participation of private sector operators and investors to take a lead role in the shift towards modern district energy systems.
