3 01/01 DEAN'S WORD The mission is to make use of its available potentials in assisting societal institutions to confront and overcome the challenges they are met with, and to provide curricula with sufficient academic depth and scientific background needed to link academic studies with the problems facing society. The has always endeavored to upgrade the scientific level of postgraduate studies, this includes offering updated references through the Faculty Library, providing access to international journal articles via subscription to major scientific research databases, supplying research labs in the different Departments and research centers with state-of-the-art equipment, and preparing lecture halls to accommodate the number of graduate students. The present postgraduate regulation builds on the experience gained during the past four years, and includes only minor revisions to the credit-hour specifications, issued for the first time in 009. The adoption of the credit-hour system aimed at being compatible with advanced scientific institutions, thus facilitating credit transfer between different universities. In this regulation, several curricula were updated by adding new courses and/or revising existing ones. Finally, I wish the students enrolled in our Graduate Program success and hope their contributions to science and scientific research would benefit our Faculty, Country, and Mankind. I also wish our Faculty Members success in their mission to lead their graduate students along the proper path throughout the implementation of the research work, which I hope would always constitute a valuable contribution to knowledge and prosperity. Dean Prof. Sherif Ahmed Mourad 1

4 01/01 WORD OF THE VICE DEAN FOR GRADUATE STUDIES AND RESEARCH The new regulation for graduate studies is a development of the year 000 regulation by introducing a credit hour system in accordance with the reference framework for graduate studies set by the Engineering Sector Committee. The development aims at matching the credit hour concept followed in most countries all over the world, to allow for development of the three axes of graduate studies at the Faculty; Postgraduate Diploma, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy. The regulation targets raising the scientific efficiency for Postgraduate Diploma in the areas of specialization in various engineering disciplines by studying advanced applied and practical courses and participating in a team to prepare an applied project. The regulation aims at developing research capabilities and scientific thinking for the M.Sc. student in the branch, specialization, and topic chosen by the student within the research plan of the Faculty, using techniques and scientific approaches through the study of several advanced academic courses and performing an academic and applied research presented in the form of a thesis. Ph.D. study aims at developing independent thinking and the ability for innovation and improvement to be able to provide a contribution in science in the branch, specialization, and topic chosen by the student by following the technical and scientific research basis and building on the research capabilities that were developed during the M.Sc. stage by performing an applied/theoretical research. The regulation includes rules for admission, registration, study, examination and granting degrees. It also includes the listing of courses in the three levels; 500, 600 & 700, defining the compulsory and elective courses as well as prerequisite courses, if any. Courses are identified by the Responsible Department among the 14 Scientific Departments at the, Cairo University. Interdisciplinary degrees are also listed. A Ministerial Decree was issued to approve the regulations in July 009, following its approval by the Council and the Engineering Sector Committee. Students registered prior to approval of the regulation shall continue their study based on the rules and regulations defined in the year 000. The Graduate Studies Administration at the announces every semester the deadlines for application for Postgraduate Diploma, M.Sc., and Ph.D., and issues the necessary forms and follow-up on the registration, examination, and keeping Graduate Students' electronic files. The Responsible Department sets the number of graduate students admitted and the courses as well as suggesting the supervising committee and evaluation committee for M.Sc. theses and Ph.D. dissertations. The decisions are approved by the Faculty Council after review by the Graduate Studies Committee. The Departments are also responsible for following up on the progress of the graduate students with the supervising committee and reporting it to the Graduate Studies Administration. The regulation caters for interdisciplinary Postgraduate Diplomas that involve different engineering disciplines, such as the Postgraduate Management Diploma, which includes electrical, mechanical, chemical, and civil engineering, and the Postgraduate Natural Gas Diploma, which involves mining, petroleum, metallurgy, chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineers. The regulation allows for introduction of new Postgraduate Diplomas to cater for the need to stay abreast with the developments in work and application in various engineering sectors. The number of admitted M.Sc. students has increased to 180 students and the number is expected to augment due to the increase in number of engineers and the needs of the society. M.Sc. students are required to take a number of courses (18 credit hours) with a minimum grade of B-, and then perform a research and write a thesis (18 credit hours). The average period to obtain an M.Sc. is about four years, and the number of students currently registered is 50. The number of students

5 01/01 who were awarded the M.Sc. degree was 0 in 008. The number of registered Ph.D. students increases by about 15% each year. However, the number of Ph.D. degrees granted every year is almost the same. This is attributed to the high technical and academic standards. The current number of registered Ph.D. students is 578. Achieving a Ph.D. requires passing a comprehensive exam and a number of specialized courses (18 credit hours) with a minimum of.7 points for each course, in addition to a dissertation that includes a scientific contribution (0 credit hours). The period of obtaining a Ph.D. is about four years on average. The number of Ph.D. awarded in 009 was 69. The number of Ph.D. students increases every year, which is a testimony of trust in the, as a prestigious institution, in addition to the prominent position of the holder of such certificate in the society. Currently, the number of registered graduate students is about 00. A number of M.Sc. and Ph.D. are linked to topics related to problems in the society and others related to current technological problems or research topics that make use of the research and laboratory facilities to perform the research. The development of the new regulation took place throughout the period 004 to 009, under the guidance of Prof. Adel Khalil, the former Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research. His efforts were instrumental in achieving the development and reaching this final form. Conscientious review and valuable comments on the English version draft by Prof. Salwa Abd-El-Hafiz, Prof. Sherine Wahba, and Prof. Reem Ettouney are also acknowledged. Significant refinement efforts of the regulation were carried out in the period by Prof. Sherif Mourad. As a result of these efforts, new interdisciplinary programs were introduced and more international collaboration was made possible. In conclusion, the efforts of Faculty Members in the advancement of teaching, research and application is achieved by developing the performance and increasing research, laboratory and library facilities to achieve the targets of graduate studies and ensure linking them with the needs of both the industry and the society. The Graduate Studies Administration also aspires to serve the students and follow up on the graduate studies requirements. Vice Dean of Graduate Studies and Research Prof. Amr Amin Adly

6 01//01 INTRODUCTION Graduate studies started at the, in the early 1940s. Since then, many prominent figures in the society have been granted M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees, and the scientific community has gained faculty members in various engineering institutions in Egypt, Arab Countries, and some foreign universities. Graduate studies regulations have continuously developed since their inception. The rules were first issued as internal regulations that were amended in 1956, 1967, and 197. During these phases, new specialized Postgraduate Diplomas were introduced. The year 197 witnessed the appointment of the first Vice Dean for Graduate Studies and Research. In that year, the requirements for the M.Sc. degree were amended to include both courses and thesis instead of thesis only. In August 1984, the first postgraduate regulation was issued, introducing new concepts such as: 1. Allowing engineers to register for graduate studies in a department other than the one he/she has obtained his/her B.Sc.. Introducing M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering Mathematics and Engineering Physics.. Introducing interdisciplinary Postgraduate Diplomas in nuclear engineering, environmental engineering, control engineering, new and renewable energy, corrosion of metals, and engineering management. These diplomas are not the responsibility of a specific department, but are managed by a Steering Committee from the departments involved in the teaching process. 4. Introducing the qualifying exam for Ph.D. students where a committee of five faculty members examines the student in his general area of study and his research work in order to endorse his registration for the Ph.D. The year 000 regulation introduced several new modifications: 1. Defining 51 clauses in six divisions.. Introducing several new Postgraduate Diplomas in several applied areas.. Updating the graduate courses and introducing new courses. 4. Improving the registration, examination, and granting procedures. 5. Improving the qualifying exam procedures. 6. Using credit hours for full-year courses. The current regulation includes further improvements whereas: 1. Adopting semester system instead of full-year system.. Introducing prerequisite course requirements.. Introduction of new Postgraduate Diplomas and interdisciplinary Diplomas. 4. Continuous development of existing courses and introduction of new courses. 5. Requiring Ph.D. students to publish at least one research paper in a specialized scientific refereed publication that is included in international indexes. 4 INTRODUCTION
