OVERVIEW le transport de demain
COVERING 32,246 km IN FRANCE, THE GRTgaz NATURAL GAS TRANSMISSION NETWORK IS THE LONGEST IN EUROPE GRTgaz, an independent transmission operator, is owned by GDF SUEZ (75 %) and Société d Infrastructures Gazières (25 %) Main transmission network 25 compressor stations with an installed capacity of 525 MW 6 interconnections with adjacent networks 3 LNG terminal interface points LNG terminal interface point under construction Shareholdings Megal Germany 1,075 km of high-pressure pipelines 6 compressor stations BOG Austria 245 km of high-pressure pipelines 3 compressor stations Direction of natural gas flow Adjacent transmission and LNG terminal operators 100 SHIPPER CUSTOMERS use the GRTgaz network and services to transport their gas. GRTgaz serves 4,475 DELIVERY STATIONS supplying: 16 distribution network operators 828 industrial customers 12 electricity power plants connected to the transmission network
GRTgaz, PROVIDING A SECURE, COMPETITIVE AND UNIFIED SUPPLY As a public utility, GRTgaz ensures that the natural gas market in France functions smoothly, in the interests of all consumers: industrial sites and gas-fired power plants directly connected to the transmission network, households, local authorities and businesses supplied by distribution networks, which are in turn supplied by the transmission network. Connected to LNG terminals on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, to neighbouring European networks and underground storage facilities, the GRTgaz transmission network provides access to diverse supply sources. It thus contributes to both France s and Europe s energy security and the competitiveness of our industry. The transmission of natural gas via underground pipelines is a safe, inconspicuous and economical way of transporting large quantities of energy while protecting local activities, landscape and biodiversity. It is therefore a driver of future energy solutions, which favour the development of renewable energies, including renewable gas. 3
STEEL GAS PIPELINES with a diameter of between 80 and 1,200 mm, buried under one meter of land, transport large quantities of natural gas. NATIONAL DISPATCHING CONTROLS natural gas flows within the transmission network in order to meet the needs of its shipper customers 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. EVERY KM, COMPRESSOR STATIONS equipped with compressors and measurement, control and safety systems, raise the pressure of the gas moving through the pipelines. 4
ABOVE GROUND, YELLOW POSTS AND MARKERS indicate the location of gas pipelines. Underground pipelines offer a high level of safety. The network forms the subject of monitoring on the ground, on foot, by car and helicopter, as well as remotely from regional monitoring centres. AN INCONSPICUOUS EFFICIENT NETWORK ON 8 th FEBRUARY 2012, the GRTgaz network experienced record-breaking consumption levels with energy demand of 158,000 MW, more than 60 % higher than that recorded on the electricity transmission network for the same period. 5

AIMING FOR COMMERCIAL OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE GRTgaz supports its customers by offering them tailor made, flexible and competitive services. LISTENING TO CUSTOMERS NEEDS GRTgaz pursues a policy of active dialogue in order to assess the needs of users of the natural gas transmission network. It works with LNG terminal and underground storage facility operators in France, and with transmission operators in neighbouring countries, to provide the best possible service and to facilitate cross-border trading. Aware of the need to guarantee the optimum use of existing infrastructures, GRTgaz is increasing its network s capacities in order to improve the security and competitiveness of gas supplies. For industrial consumers, GRTgaz is developing services that facilitate access to the gas market, enabling them to optimise their sourcing. TAILOR-MADE, PROGRESSIVE SERVICES Transmission services are sold in the form of access capacities in two market zones, within which shipper customers are able to trade gas freely and optimise their sourcing. GRTgaz supports industrial customers connected to its network, making a contribution to their competitiveness, in particular as regards energy performance, as well as guaranteeing a good level of reliability in terms of their deliveries and the continuity of their supply. With the same aims, GRTgaz also supports conversion projects for industrial operations that are not connected to the network. REGULATED OPERATIONS GRTgaz conducts its business within a regulated framework, in a transparent and nondiscriminatory manner as regards its customers. The French Energy Regulation Commission (CRE) sets the public rates for the use of networks, provides a framework for its investment and checks the quality of the service provided. Today, on the final bill for a household with gas heating, the proportion set aside for «transmission» activities is limited to 6 %, on average. 7
90 % OF PIPELINES are located in rural areas. GRTgaz is making every effort to maintain quality dialogue with farmers and local stakeholders in general. Objective: reduce the impact on farms and encourage biodiversity. GRTgaz INVESTS MORE THAN 800 MILLION EUROS every year in modernising and developing the network. In terms of regional stakeholders, it ensures that the local benefits of this investment are maximised. 8 DIVERSITY, GENDER EQUALITY AND EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES, GRTgaz is committed to achieving ambitious targets, whilst respecting people. Its corporate development project calls on its entire capacity for openness, innovation and solidarity.
GROUNDWORK can damage pipelines. To prevent this risk, GRTgaz marks their routes, informs local residents and holds meetings to underline the necessity of making work project declarations. GRTgaz provides companies having declared their intention to start work with on-site support at no cost. COMMITTING SUCCEEDING TOGETHER WITH ITS PARTNERS: the National Museum of Natural History, the National Forestries Bureau, the Federation of Regional National Parks, the Endowment Fund for Biodiversity, the French Ramblers Association and the National Institute of Preventive Archaeological Research, GRTgaz protects and promotes the heritage of the land it «leases», with the aim of better integrating its activities. 9
GRTgaz I OVERVIEW 3 out of 4 compressor stations are ISO certified: nitrogen oxide (NO X ) emissions have been reduced tenfold in eight years. The natural gas transmission network is a low consumption network. It only consumes 0.3 % of the energy it transmits. The Réso vert interactive map allows biomethane project sponsors to view their options for injection into the network ( Alongside 4 other transmission operators (Belgian, Dutch, Swedish and Danish), GRTgaz has undertaken to develop a 100 % decarbonated network by
A DRIVER OF FUTURE ENERGY SOLUTIONS Energy transition has begun. Gas and its infrastructures will play a vital role in meeting its challenges and contributing to its success. FACILITATING THE DEVELOPMENT OF WIND AND SOLAR ENERGIES Natural gas and gas infrastructures play a decisive role in meeting electricity demand and supporting the development of renewable energies. Gas-fired power plants connected to the network enable fluctuations in solar and wind power generation to be offset with maximum flexibility and minimal polluting emissions. The gas transmission network already plays a role that is fundamental to fostering the emergence of a more balanced energy mix. RENEWABLE GAS WITHIN THE NETWORK Since 2014, GRTgaz has been preparing to receive 100 % renewable gas within the transmission network. This renewable gas is biomethane produced from domestic and agricultural waste or woodland biomass. Injecting biomethane into the networks reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improves air quality and saves non-renewable resources. E-GAZ : PROVIDING A FUTURE FOR UNCONSUMED ELECTRICITY With the increase in production in renewable energy sectors, electricity production will often be surplus to demand. One long term, and very promising, approach consists of recovering surplus electricity to produce hydrogen by means of water electrolysis and injecting it into gas transmission networks in the form of synthetic hydrogen or methane, obtained by methanation. «e-gaz» is based on the simple idea of an intelligent and virtuous combination of two complementary forms of energy and the convenient reuse of existing infrastructures. 11
