The Galveston Bay Foundation Mission: To protect, preserve, and enhance the natural resources of Galveston Bay and its tributaries for present users and for posterity. Four target areas: Conservation Education Research Advocacy

GBF & Living Shorelines Provide assistance with: Project design Materials selection Permitting Construction Plant selection & installation Funding

Why Not Bulkhead? Eliminates/does not provide any replacement value in terms of fishery habitat Increases wave energy and erosion of adjacent unprotected shore Is prone to structural failure over time

Living Shorelines Provide erosion control benefits & enhance natural shoreline habitat Allow for natural coastal processes to remain Absorbs wave energy from wind, boats, storm events Hydrology unchanged Movement of organics Flood protection - absorption & release of excess water Pollutant filtration from runoff Create critical habitat Provides habitat for fin and shellfish Provides rookery, foraging and nesting habitat for birds Can provide additional protection to existing bulkheads.

Why are Living Shorelines Important? Estimated loss of > 45,000 acres of wetlands and associated habitat since 1950 [1] Habitat destruction & effect on fish and wildlife greatest environmental problem affecting Galveston Bay System [2] Much of our shoreline is privately owned.

Other Benefits Promotes community conservation ethic among project participants. Allows private landowners opportunity for hands-on involvement in a local restoration project Increases community involvement and awareness of conservation and restoration issues.

What s in it for Landowners? Shoreline stabilization Better erosion protection than bulkheads Protection of existing bulkhead Savings Cost effective alternative to bulkheads Fewer maintenance/ replacement costs

Cumulative impacts or the domino effect. Small Scale, Big Impact Great outreach opportunity Education More personal involvement High stakeholder buy-in Positive experience

Considerations Need Cost Site limitations Permitting issues One size does not fit all

Conclusion Living Shorelines can be a cost effective alternative to shoreline armoring providing education and outreach opportunities. The cumulative impacts of small projects can add up.
