Environmentally Friendly New Karolinska Solna Construction of New Karolinska Solna (NKS) was begun in the summer of In order to safeguard the very high environmental and sustainability goals that have been set, the whole project is being carried out from a sustainability perspective. One of the tools used to this end is environmental certification of the buildings. 1
Environmentally Friendly New Karolinska Solna New Karolinska Solna (NKS) is an important part of the Future Plan for Health and Medical Care, which is being implemented to meet future needs for care and continue to provide the patients good care. New Karolinska Solna has been certified according to the LEED international environmental certification system in the Gold class. The buildings already met the requirements for the Swedish system, the Sweden Green Building Council, gold level. The hospital will thereby become the first certified according to both systems proof that the project s highly set environmental standards yield results. New Karolinska Solna is the ninth largest healthcare project in the world that has been LEED Gold certified. When the whole project is finished, the new hospital, Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, will be one of the world s most sustainable university hospitals. Among other things, the newly built hospital has its own geothermal heating plant that covers most of the hospital s needs for heat and cooling. The heat and cooling energy that cannot be obtained from the geothermal heating plant comes from renewable district heating and district cooling, which means that the hospital has a completely climateneutral energy supply. A number of other smart solutions contribute to making the hospital environmentally friendly. Among them are lifts that recycle energy, green sedum roofs, economic flow mixers and toilets, windows that let in the light, but not the heat in the summer and needs-based lighting and ventilation. Both of the certification systems complement one another. The Sweden Green Building Council (SGBC) focuses on the indoor environment, where daylight and climate are major issues, while LEED takes a holistic approach and assesses both indoor and outdoor environments, as well as accessibility and green spaces. Both systems require follow-up and verification. Stockholm County Council s high sustainability standards for the NKS project comprise a number of areas: energy efficiency, climate-smart solutions, impact on the surroundings, indoor environment, transports, waste and materials. 2
Photo: Kristoffer Marchi, Skanska FACTS All building materials are inspected in the Building Product Assessment to ensure that they do not contain environmentally or healthhazardous substances. LEED and SGBC LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. There are four levels and Gold is the second highest. The first part of the NKS project achieved LEED Gold with 61 points. The boundary for Gold is 60 points. The next level, Platinum, has a boundary of 80 points. The NKS project is being completed in stages. One phase at a time will be certified in LEED. The whole project will have been certified in All phases are already certified according to SGBC Gold. This is the only hospital building in Sweden that has been certified with LEED Gold in the category New Construction. There was no category specifically for hospitals when the NKS project was started, but there is now the category healthcare. One hospital building in Karlstad has been certified according to LEED Gold in the health care category. It is the first hospital to be certified at the SGBC Gold level. The NKS project has received a preliminary certification that is valid for two years after the building has been brought into use. After these two years, the preliminary certification must be verified. 3
Photo: Kristoffer Marchi, Skanska Windows that let in light, but not heat in the summer. FACTS How energy will be saved in the newly built university hospital Lifts that recycle energy. Windows that let in light, but not heat in the summer. Water-saving taps and toilets. Needs-based lighting and ventilation. Renewable energy sources providing 99.7 % of the energy. (climate compensation takes place for the emissions that are made) Prioritisation of locally produced, recycled and low-emission materials and FSC certified wood. All building materials are inspected in the Building Product Assessment to ensure that they do not contain environmentally or health-hazardous substances. Electric charging posts every ten parking spaces. Energy-efficient LED lighting in a large part of the hospital. Energy-efficient windows and façades. Green sedum roofs on the hospital provide green spaces and collect water. Source sorting into more than 30 different fractions. Furniture and décor are chosen with environmental consideration. All food waste is collected and becomes biogas for the county s buses and cars. 4
FACTS Geothermal heating facility Number of drilled holes: 169 Number of holes that are at least 220 metres deep: 117 Total length of the drill holes: Nearly 35 kilometres (34,498 metres) Diameter of the drill holes: 115 millimetres Heat pumps that can simultaneously supply at least 3 megawatts of cooling and 4.5 megawatts of heating. The in-house geothermal heating facility is estimated to reduce the total need for purchased energy by 26 per cent, or 60 kwh/m 2 and year. For the whole hospital, this means a reduction of 17 million kwh per year. The amount of energy saved through the energy storage and heat pumps thereby corresponds to the heating of around 800 normal single-family homes for a year. Furniture and décor are chosen with environmental consideration. Photo: Kristoffer Marchi, Skanska 5
Energy and climate performance for the operation of New Karolinska Solna Energy and climate performance of NKS depending on level of ambition Energy consumption a ) (MWh/yr) Energy cost operations b ) (SEK/yr) Climate impact operations (tonnes CO2 equiv/yr) European energy mix SCC energy mix Performance by rules of Swedish National Board of Housing (BBR) Performance SGBC Gold 40,494 36,445,009 18,223 c) 562 e) 26,336 23,701,999 11,851 c) 372 e) Performance NKS 19,256 17,330, f) (8,665 c) ) 39f) (230 e) ) Savings performance NKS comp BBR 21,238 (52 %) 19,114,515 (52 %) 18,183 g) (99.8 %) 522 g) (93 %) a) The calculations have been done for property energy as this is what is subject to requirements in SGBC. Savings are also made for operations energy as there are rock layers with heat pumps in NKS, enabling the use of free cooling from the rock layer in the operations. b) In energy prices, simplifications have been made and standard values have been assumed for district heating and district cooling. Power fees are not included. c) The climate impact regarding the energy supply to NKS corresponded to the European energy mix. Information on emissions from European district heating is not available so standard amounts have been used. d) The climate impact regarding the energy supply to NKS corresponded to the Nordic energy mix. e) The climate impact regarding the energy supply to NKS corresponded to other hospital properties in SCC; renewable energy and certified electricity (currently from hydroelectric power and district heating). f) The climate impact of NKS energy mix. Water and wind power electricity. For district heating, suppliers with a different fuel mix and lower climate impact than in the County Council s other hospital properties have been procured, providing significantly lower climatic impact. g) In addition, the climate impact of district heating at NKS, approximately 13 tonnes of CO2 equivalents, is climate compensated by the supplier Norrenergi through Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects. 6
There are currently no established standards or models in regards to impact reporting of projects financed with Green Bonds. The Stockholm County Council is at this point working together will Kommuninvest and several other parts in Sweden on developing and improving the methods of reporting the climate and environmental impacts of its projects financed with Green Bonds to its investors. In this paper we summarize the environmental impacts of one large project in Stockholm, the Nya Karolinska Solna. 7
