Next Steps Behavior Tracking Waste Audit Expansion!
Sustainable Living Video Kendall Cody
Problem R&DE lacks a comprehensive, long-term program to incentivize energy, water and waste reduction among students in housing beyond the Sustainable Living Guide. This leads to unnecessary costs and environmental footprint.
Goals Encourage and incentivize more sustainable living habits and awareness among Stanford Students Reduce overall resource consumption, specifically focusing in on student energy use, water use and waste
Investigation Focus groups and interviews were conducted in order to determine the best way to effectively reach the Stanford student population.
Investigation Key Findings: A lighthearted, yet educational approach to these issues is the best way to reach students Communicate tangible results/metrics legitimizes the sustainability program and inspires students to actually perform Create a community network for reinforcing
Solution Make information on our website more applicable and available to students & staff through more frequent updates to the sustainable housing website Develop and script an effective video series on How to Live Sustainably in the Student Housing
Implementation Update the Sustainable Stanford website to include more recent initiatives and information so that students have information available to them Create and distribute Sustainable Living video series implementing familiar Stanford faces to deliver the message of how to live sustainably on campus
I look forward to the eventual creation and distribution of the video series and hope it has a positive impact on Stanford sustainability efforts. Reflection I learned about how to effectively reach a university student body and useful tools for eliciting behavioral change in regards to sustainability initiatives as well as other general initiatives.
Thank you! I would like to give a special thanks to Nicole Greenspan and Laura McKaughan who have provided immense guidance and support throughout the planning and conceptualizing of the video series as well as my entire internship experience.
