3 Waste Management Industry Survey (WMIS) Biennial survey Two questionnaires: Government survey (413 units in 2012 sample) Business survey (403 units in 2012 sample) Time series since 1998 Response rates typically in 80s for government; 70s for business 2012 results published earlier this year Collection for 2014 reference year will begin in October
4 WMIS What s in; what s not Included: Businesses in NAICS 562 (waste management and remediation services; only companies involved in waste management are inscope for sample) and government-operated waste processing facilities Not included: On-site waste management e.g., grocery store managing its own packaging waste Reuse or resale including bottle return programs (Beer Store), used clothing, etc. Households backyard composting 4

8 The Household Environment Survey Background HES Measures the behaviours and practices of households vis-à-vis the environment Several themes covered on the survey Purchasing decisions Environmental practices around the home (use of energy efficient products, gardening, participation in ecological activities, etc.) Conducted every two years 8
