2 AN INTRODUCTION TO RAIN WATER HARVESTING MANY USES FOR RAIN WATER WATER AS ELIXIR OF LIFE USE RAINWATER AS ALTERNATIVE TO POTABLE WATER USES HOW MUCH CAN YOU SAVE? Uncontaminated air, water and nutrition are still the indispensable and basic requirements for the Rainwater Harvesting System is an excellent alternative or complement to our municipal water For a lot of domestic applications rainwater can be a perfect alternative to potable water. For example Liter per person per day (average Europe) existence of life on our blue planet. 3 INSTALLING A RAIN WATER HARVESTING SYSTEM 1. Gutters & conduits 2. Pre-filtration 3. Storage tanks 4. Control systems with pump, break-tank and mains connection 1 1. GUTTERS & CONDUITS A rain gutter is a water channel that is attached to the edge of a sloping roof to collect and transport rainwater to the storage tank. They can be semicircular or rectangular. The required discharge capacity of the gutter is a factor of the maximum rainfall intensity and roof surface area. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are preffered rain gutter because they are inexpensive and easy to install. Conduits are pipelines that transport rainwater from the catchment to the harvesting system. The number of conduits and their diameter is determined by maximum rainfall intensity and roof surface area. SELECTION OF ARTICLES 4 Gutter 5" Gutter Rain water collection pipe 2 Leaf trap Mast gutter drain end piece Rainwater gutter hopper, type 1 3 Outside corner piece Mast gutter saddle Check our website for the complete range on gutters and conduits! 4 5
4 2. PRE-FILTRATION SYSTEM The pre-filter consists of a filter screen, skimmer overflow and non-return valve that together remove large and floating debris like pollen from the tank. The engineered, hydraulic jump design, means the pre-filter cleans itself automatically. Features Integrated skimmer Self-cleaning (during heavy rainfall) Minimal maintenance Integrated tank overflow Non-return valve ADVANTAGES The pre-filter, also known as the hydraulic jump filter, is an innovation for roof areas ranging from 60 m² to more than m². The sturdy screen is indestructible and is designed to last the life of the filter. Its trapezoidal shape and diagonally set profile prevents debris from settling and clogging it. The water surface in the tank is further cleaned by means of an overflow skimmer integrated into the pre-filter. Non-return valve A non-return valve of standard size, as stipulated by most regulations, is optional. This prevents the overflowing dirty water from flowing back into the system and also stops small animals from entering the tank. Self-cleaning with 98% efficiency The pre-filter cleans itself during heavy rainfall events. It means minimum maintenance costs for the user in comparison to other filter systems. An overall rainwater filtering efficiency of 98% is achieved with the unique, self-cleaning design. 3. STORAGE TANK The storage tank collects and stores the rainwater runoff from the conduits. The tanks could be above ground, partly underground or fully underground depending on the space availability. To determine the size of the storage tank which best fits you, you can make use of our rainwater harvesting webpage. It illustrates how much you can save based on your region. Installers can convert an existing tank into a rainwater tank by drilling a hole with the help of a hole saw. The pipes, pre-filter and inlet calmer can be inserted and fastened through these holes and the tank hatch. SELECTION OF ARTICLES HDPE, liquid tanks type CU Specially for underground installation. Note: do not place in areas with a high groundwater level. Check our website for more above ground tanks. 6 7
5 4. CONTROL SYSTEMS WITH PUMP, BREAK-TANK AND MAINS CONNECTION The control systems are a fully automatic, operating and monitoring station combining pump, controller and integrated mains water top-up. These innovative systems can easily be installed in the basement, garage or ground floor utility room of any building. The rainwater is pumped from a tank via suction hose and is used for toilet flushing, in the washing machine and for watering the garden. The pump is regulated via a pressure and flow control sensor. We also provide a water level indicator, a simple mechanism which helps to detect and indicate the water level in the tank. If the supply of rainwater runs low then the control systems, with the aid of a break-tank, automatically switch to an integrated, certified mains water top-up, so you re never out of water. Break-tanks are implemented in preventing the mixing of rainwater with that of the mains water supply and also prevents backflow. Our pump and control systems range in design, size and complexity to suit your needs. Our top line includes a speed controller which regulates the pump speed and adjusts the pressure to the required flow rate. This has great advantages for the user in terms of pump efficiency and power consumption. This rainwater unit is especially durable, quiet and economical with its power consumption. Our eco-innovative control systems save energy by 75% when compared to conventional domestic systems for particularly energy-conscious consumers. 8 9
6 WATER IS THE ELIXER OF LIFE Although two-thirds of our planet s surface is covered in water, only 2,5% from this can be readily used in our daily lives for consumption and irrigation. In order to sustain the growth of the world s population, the usage, reuse and management of water will require new solutions. Bosta works with you on these new ideas and solutions. We offer you a wide range of water transport and water treatment products that will improve your life and the quality of the planet. THIS IS HOW WE BRING WATER TO LIFE Go to our Youtube channel and watch the movie. In this brochure we offer you different products to reuse rain water.
