Energy, Urban Development and Sustainability West Michigan Climate Resiliency Framework Initiative October 6, 2014
Institute for Energy Innovation The Institute for Energy Innovation (IEI) is a Michigan not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote greater public understanding of advanced energy and its economic potential for Michigan, and to inform the public and policy discussion on Michigan s energy challenges and opportunities. IEI provides independent and unbiased research, conducts stakeholder and community engagement, organizes informational and networking events, and develops recommendations to spur public debate.
What is Advanced Energy? Electricity Generation Electricity Delivery & Management Fuel Production Fuel Delivery Energy Supply Hydropower Gas turbines Solar Wind Geothermal Marine Waste Biomass Nuclear Other DG Transmission Distribution AMI Micro-grids EV Charging Infrastructure Energy Storage Enabling IT Ethanol & Butanol Biodiesel Biogas Synthetic Diesel & Gasoline Bio-oil CNG & LNG Hydrogen Fuel Transportation Infrastructure Fueling Stations Buildings Transportation Industry Energy Demand Building Design Building Envelope HVAC District Energy, CHP, CCHP Water Heating Lighting Appliances & Electronics Enabling IT Propulsion Systems Vehicle Design & Materials Freight Logistics Land Use & Infrastructure Design Enabling IT Manufacturing Machinery & Process Equipment Industrial Combined Heat & Power
A $1.1 Trillion Global Industry 2011 Revenues
U.S.: $130 Billion (and growing!) Advanced Energy Revenue by Segment, United States: 2011
Growing Focus on Resilience
Growing Focus on Resilience Outage map from December 2013 ice storm
A Growing Issue
More events = more outages
Increases in Insurance Claims
Grid: Paying More, Getting Less
Emerging Strategies: 2030 Districts
Emerging Strategies: 2030 Districts
Mueller Community Austin, TX Vision: to create a district that would be a model for responsible urban development an alternative to land-consumptive and automobile-dependent development patterns throughout the region that could influence the form and pattern of growth within Austin.
Aspern Smart City Vienna, Austria The City Next Door: Vienna is planning to build a city where the buildings and power supply are so interconnected that synergistic effects are created. The Vision: a world-class living laboratory, where where the energy saving technologies needed for the city of tomorrow can be optimized.
Grand Rapids: A National Leader Grand Rapids is a national leader in business sustainability, LEED certification and energy innovation Named America s Greenest City by Fast Company magazine GR Sustainability Plan calls for 100% of City s energy use to come from renewable sources by 2020 #1 in LEED-certified building per capita for midsized U.S. cities (2010) #5 per capita overall 1 st U.S. city recognized by UN as Regional Centre for Sustainable Development Top 20 in U.S. local governments for purchase of green power
Local Resilience Efforts
Battle of the Buildings
Spurring Economic Growth Through Resilience Focusing on resiliency and grid modernization provides the opportunity not just to build a cleaner energy system, but a better one Advanced energy technologies and business models offer new opportunities that were previously unavailable Dramatic cost declines for advanced energy unlock additional opportunities Grand Rapids is well positioned to lead in showing the way forward leadership that will result in new economic development opportunities
Elements of Resilient Community
Development Plan/ Sustainable Planning Architecture Pursue LEED-ND designation for redevelopment plan Engage local community in developing Area Specific Plan to inform development in the project area
New Transportation Connections and Linkages Link up with BRT Routes, other public transit connections Integrate electric vehicle charging infrastructure into neighborhood redevelopment strategy
Connectivity Platform Develop ultra-high speed internet platform, including district-wide wireless network Enhance connectivity to facilitate Internet of Things Build in intelligent building materials, embedded sensors, energy controls, smart meters and connected appliances to give consumers control over energy use
District Energy Infrastructure Utilize existing Veolia district energy system Could also extend current system, or use new pod-based model or multi-building shared system Establish district-wide microgrid and allow for intentional islanding in cases of larger grid failure
Access to Capital and Financing Enact Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) District to enable low-cost financing for energy projects Could either be at City or County level Make use of Tax Increment Financing mechanisms Partner with variety of capital providers
New Electricity Generation Options Establish community solar project Work with City officials on solar readiness Partner with the City of Grand Rapids to meet goal of 100% renewable energy by 2020
A Smart Grid for Grand Rapids Integrate smart meters, connected appliances, and consumer controls to build grid of the future Establish district-wide microgrid and allow for intentional islanding in cases of larger grid failure Deploy fuel cells and energy storage to further enhance resiliency
Key Elements of Community Resilience Strategy Needs to be broad-based, involving true partnerships between private sector, government, investors and capital providers, utilities, philanthropic leaders, neighborhood associations, universities, etc. Focused on meeting community needs by leveraging local strengths More than a plan needs concrete commitments by stakeholders for implementation
