5 SIKA'S CONTRIBUTION TO SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION THE MAJOR CHARACTERISTIC of polycarboxylate ether-based superplasticizer technology is their targeted polymer design to achieve specific concrete properties. Firstly, admixtures can improve the quality and performance of concrete significantly, which in return extends its service life. In addition, thanks to the use of admixtures, the application of concrete instead of other building materials can improve the life cycle of infrastructures. The addition of works as a stabilizing and hyper water reducing admixture, enabling the use of alternative and recycled materials such as recycled aggregates which also produce a good quality concrete. Finally, in many cases the energy required to produce certain cement or concrete mixes will be positively impacted with the use of admixtures or other materials that follow LCA. SIKA SUSTAINABILITY PERFORMANCE-EFFICIENCY APPROACH All spectrum combinations of these properties are optimized in. The polymers consist of backbones with carboxyl groups and side chains. The first component backbone with carboxyl groups is responsible for the attainable water reduction / initial slump and mixing time respectively. The second one side chains determines the slump keeping capability of the superplasticizer, affected by an increasing number of side chains. The crucial factor is the limited space for carboxyl groups and side chains along the backbone. Either a carboxyl group or side chain can be attached at a certain location. This leads to the technological limitation that there are essentially three different types of polymers water reducing, slump controlling and slump retention polymers. 6 CONVENTIONAL VS. SUSTAINABLY DESIGNED GREEN A JOINT STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN between Sika's research and development centres in Dubai and Zurich. In these studies both centres carried out tests to evaluate the saving in the Cumulative Energy Demand and the Global Warming Potential that can be brought about by the use of this new generation admixture, Sika Viscocrete GR Different mix designs (Fig.1), raw materials & test results typical of those used in the GCC were analyzed and compared. The main target was to calculate the benefit from use of mixes that followed sustainably designed versus conventional ones and quantify in real life and at any time the exact technical/environmental benefits and their contribution to sustainable buildings.
