Goals and principles The following goals and principles have been the basis of product development at Hydro-Engineering: Reduction of costs and competitive equipment prices; Reduced shipping times; High energy and cavitational performance; Modular technical solutions to reduce the number of parts ; Use of standardized synchronous and asynchronous generators; Reduction of foundation and civil construction costs; Short terms for mounting and PIF; High reliability; Low maintenance cost; Optimizing the equipment for reduced water consumption and increased energy output; A faster return of investment.

Goals and principles The products developed by Hydro-Engineering can be mounted on: Classic SHPP s for green energy; Drinking water pipes of the city s water supply ; Industrial water pipes for various uses. Small hydro-units have a high energy efficiency, low investment costs, and optimal operation.

Choosing the optimal configuration for the SHPP The main points that must be taken into consideration when choosing the configuration for a SHPP are : use of one or more standardized Francis turbines; use of standardized inlet valves electric actuated at 24 V c.c.; use of standardized hydraulic units for actuating the wicked gate with pressures between bar; use of standardized synchronous and asynchronous generators; use of flow measurement systems and standardized flow levels ; use of standardized automation, measurement, and control systems; use of standardized scheme for HMI system (SCADA) for parameter monitoring and process control; use of standardized step-up transformers.

Choosing the optimal configuration for the SHPP In choosing the main components for the SHPP (turbines, generators, transformers) the overall efficiency must be taken into account. - usual values for efficiency at nominal output are: The efficiency curves at partial loads between (0.6 1)xP nominal are relatively flat, case in which the average efficiency will be at a maximum

8 2. Choosing the optimal configuration for the small hydropowerplant The functioning of the small hydro-unit is optimized depending on the flow through turbine and the water level of the dam. The anual energy produced is: Q i - monthly average debit; H Ci - monthly average head; - turbine efficiency at partial loads; - generator efficiency at partial loads; - transformer efficiency at partial loads; - monthly average time of operation. t i For net heads (H n ) between m the optimal solution for SHPP is the standardized Francis type turbine.

Electrical and automation equipment Main components: 1.- generator power factor correction and supply cabinet (G-1,G-2) - 2 pcs. 2.- unit control cabinet (DCA-1, DCA-2) - 2 pcs. 3.- general service cabinet (DSG) - 1 pcs. 4.- control room - 1 set /0,4kV station -1 set The automation system is managing the startup process, network connection, energy output at 0,4 kv, automatic compensation of the power factor, normal or emergency shutdown of the small hydro-unit.

13 4. Application: 2x800 kw micro hydro-units mounted on the drinking water pipe of Cluj-Napoca city, Romania. The energy produced by the hydro-units is delivered to the grid through the 0.4/20 kv step-up transformer.

The SCADA screens permit: Monitoring of process parameters for each hydro-unit; Starting and stopping the hydro-unit in normal or emergency mode; Switching from automatic to manual operation.
