5 Pink Hill Park Recycling Center Scheduled to open mid to late summer Materials accepted: glass, plastic, aluminum, tin, paper, newspaper, cardboard, & office paper
6 Pink Hill Park Recycling Center Facility is anticipated to function similar to the Independence Recycling Centers. Staffed facility, locked when closed Open approximately 28 hours per week Initially anticipated to be open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
7 Pink Hill Park Recycling Center Volunteers will be sought to help with unloading cars and ensuring proper sorting of recyclable materials. Volunteers during 2010 will be eligible for a free day at a Disney theme park through Disney s Give a Day. Get a Disney Day. program.
8 Recycling in City Parks The City submitted a grant last week for recycling bins to be located in City Parks. If the grant is awarded, three parks will receive recycling bins: Hidden Valley Park (22 bins), Pink Hill Park (10 bins) and Wilbur Young Park (9 bins). Bins will be located near existing trash bins, especially near picnic shelters and athletic fields.

10 Recycling in City Parks Results of the grant should be available by March. If awarded, the program would begin in July or August to coincide with the Recycling Center opening.
11 Household Hazardous Waste Blue Springs hosts an annual Household Hazardous Waste Event. On alternating years, the event switches between an ABOP and a full HHW event.

13 ABOP Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event (Automotive Fluids, Batteries, Motor Oil, and Paint Only) Sat., April 17, :00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Pink Hill Park in Blue Springs (1-1/2 1/2 miles north of I-70 I off 7 Hwy. Enter off of Park Road) Items accepted: ONLY automotive fluids, batteries, motor oil, paints, & related products.

Other Community HHW Events Independence April 10, 2010 Other community options available, also at no charge for Blue Springs and participating community residents.
16 Household Hazardous Waste For additional information, call Nadja Karpilow at the Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District at Explosives, tires, asbestos, and yard, medical and commercial waste will not be accepted at any HHW mobile event.
17 Recycle Spot Website The Recycle Spot Website allows searching by material type. It provides locations to recycle all materials.

19 Select any item by clicking on the plus sign in front of any listed item, such as Building Materials or Electronics Items A sub-list will appear providing options that can be checked. Click search to see locations to recycle all checked items.

21 Green Building From the MARC website: MARC supports local green building efforts because of their significant ificant impact on protecting the environment. A green building is an environmentally responsible and healthy place to live and work. Architectural design and construction practices can significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of a building on the environment and its occupants through: Sustainable site planning Safeguarding water and water efficiency Energy efficiency and renewable energy Conservation of materials and resources Indoor environmental quality Green building efforts exist both at the local and national level. l.
22 Local Green Building Efforts Heart of America Green Builder Program The Metropolitan Energy Center's (MEC) mission is to promote sustainable, efficient, and environmentally healthy communities in the Kansas City region. Through this program, they bring together a multitude of stakeholders from a variety of professions in the interest of promoting support for, and development of, green building practices and projects in the area. Build Green This voluntary program developed by the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City aims to bring together local buyers interested in green homes with w the local builders that construct them. Members of the Build Green Council C are homebuilders who have made a commitment to encourage homebuyers to build their next home with Build Green elements in mind. Heartland Green Sheets This Web site provides useful information about regionally-produced, recycled- content building products to architects, contractors, developers and manufacturers in the Kansas City region. It features a searchable database of recycled ycled-content content building products within a 500 mile radius of Kansas City and evaluates the products according to 10 specific criteria.. The project can help local builders meet certain LEED certification requirements, a rating system for green buildings.. The project is supported by the Kansas City Design Center with faculty at the University of Kansas School of Architecture and Urban Design.
23 National Green Building Efforts U.S. Green Building Council This coalition of leaders from across the building industry promotes otes buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. Council members work together to develop LEED products and resources, the Greenbuild annual International Conference and Expo, policy guidance, and educational e and marketing tools that support the adoption of sustainable building. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System provides a complete framework for assessing building performance and meeting g sustainability goals. LEED recognizes achievements and promotes expertise in green building through a comprehensive system offering project certification, professional p accreditation, training and practical resources. American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment (COTE) provides the AIA with a body of knowledge on environmental and energye nergy-related related issues and advises them on related policy matters affecting the practice of architecture nationwide. The Committee supports cooperation with manufacturers, government agencies, environmental organizations, and industry groups in developing and testing environmentally sound materials. Healthy Building Network a national network of green building professionals and environmental ntal and health activists.
