Power of Execution LEVERAGING PEOPLE FOR TOMORROW... 1
Power of Execution 2
Leadership without the discipline of execution is incomplete and ineffective. Without the ability to execute, all other attributes of leadership become Hollow Larry Bossidy Chairman, Honeywell 3
Overview Organization face many challenges in today s shaky economy competitive battles, increased cost, decreased margin and host of internal & external forces Organizations are in a constant state of adaption; they are seeking new ways to achieve strategic organizational change and by focusing their efforts on execution rather than strategy is one of those ways 4
Overview Why is execution so difficult? often, it is because we, as leaders in our organizations, have been taught for so many years how to think strategically. We are not knowledgeable in the area of execution; therefore, making it difficult for us to implement Executing strategic goals is by far the greatest challenge in business today. Aligning the organization with your most important objectives is a never-ending battle Imagine an organization where all employees are totally focused on the most important priorities and committed to achieving the wildly important goals 5
What is Execution? The art of GETTING THINGS DONE Science with clear INPUTS, PROCESSES & OUTPUTS Dictates Strategy Bridges the gap between Promise & Results Walk the talk 6
Execution is not Distinct from Strategy, People & Operation, but central to them Mere Compliance & Conformity Mere intellectual capability to perceive, but the power of limbs to produce Keeping pace with the Organization, but sets the pace at which organization moves 7
Execution Then why this is neglected. Not intellectually challenging Confused with micro Management & Do it yourself Considered subservient to strategy 8
Why Execution is necessary Execution is Discipline Execution is the Major Job of Business Lead Execution must Be the Core Element of Business Culture 9
Building Blocks for Execution Having Right People in the right place - address issues of lack of knowledge & courage Creating Execution Culture New way of Thinking The way we do things Amalgamation of Shared values & Beliefs Second nature Encompasses Philosophy, Process & Practice Internalize & Institutionalize Change behavior by changing reward Shaping leader s behaviors Align People Processes/Operation processes for Synchronization 10
Execution Essentials Know Your self Know your People & Business Insist on Realism The Reality Check Set Goals & Priorities Team to be clear about expected outcome/results Follow Through Reward the key contributing/high performer players Enhance People s Capabilities via Coaching 11
The 4 Discipline of Execution Focus on Wildly Important Goal / When Act on Lead Measures Lag/Lead Measure Keep a compelling scoreboard Engagement Create a cadence of accountabilities - Ownership 12
Behavior Change is the key Behavior change leads to Strategy Achievement Strategy Business Critical Events Desired Behaviors Interventions - through levers that drive and reinforce behavior (e.g., process, structure, leadership, reward) Executing strategy is not as easy as formulating it. It is often very difficult to get people to change existing behaviors that are deeply rooted in workforce culture 13
Top Challenges in Execution Driving Horizontal Alignment Adapting to Dynamic Circumstances Communicating Strategy Effectively Looking beyond the Performance Metric Breaking away from Top Down Approach Lack of leadership skills 14
Important Execution Skills Critical & Strategically Thinking Planning & scheduling Leadership & Influencing skills Effective Communication Negotiation Team Building Cost Management Quality Management Diversity & Inclusion Risk/Contingency Management Conflict Management Mentoring & Coaching 15
Execution is more of a People Problem Execution is a People Problem and not a Strategy Problem Define the Big Arrows Identify the highest Impact People Determine what they should Focus on Hold laser focused coaching session Collect & share the Data Amplify Performance 16
In conclusion. Execution is everything Without strategy, execution is aimless & without execution strategy is useless Strategy Execution is the responsibility that makes or breaks executives Complexity is the enemy of execution Average people have great ideas. Legends have great execution 17
Just do it.. 18
The Journey must Continues... to transform People, Communities & Organization
