2 Programme Objectives 1 The graduates will use the latest knowledge and techniques in developing, maintaining, servicing, sales and marketing, and research of electrical and electronics technologies. 2 The graduates will assume technical, managerial and ethical roles effectively in the organizations they work in. 3 The graduates will be involved in the affairs of professional institutions and keep abreast of the nation s needs and developments, and provide services to the engineering communities and the nation.
3 Unit Outcomes 1 Acquire and apply knowledge of engineering fundamentals. 2 Acquire in-depth technical competence in the specific engineering discipline during the industrial training. 3 Demonstrate problem identification and solving skill. 4 Apply the relevant references, guidelines and code of ethics related to engineering practices. 5 Apply systems approach to design and evaluate operational performance. 6 Apply interpersonal communication skill with technical or/and non technical staff in the work place. 7 Work effectively as an individual or team player. 8 Recognize the need to undertake life-long learning.
4 Why Industrial Training? 1) Part of the EAC requirements for the accreditation of all engineering programmes. (EAC also specifies that such programme must not fall in the final semester of study.) 2) An opportunity for University and Industry to measure students achievements of unit outcomes and programme objectives. So, you should understand these requirements and work towards that.
5 Credit Hours: 4 Unit Details Eligibility: Students who earned 60 credit hours in the previous sem. (You may appeal to go industrial training if you can earn 60 credit hours after September exam results released.) Not eligible: Under probation, CGPA < 2.0. Students are NOT allowed to defer industrial training till the final semester. Training Period: 1 Oct Dec 2012 (minimum 12 weeks) Assessments: Pass ( 50 marks) or fail - Report, daily records (70%) - Oral presentation - Industrial appraisal form (30%)
6 What You Have To Do? (A) Obtain an industrial placement before October. (B) Undergo industrial training during the Oct semester. (C) Submit report and appraisal form after training. (D) Give an oral presentation after training.
7 A Industrial Placement 1) Update your particulars and resumes Log-on to industrial training management portal Login: student ID number Password: IC number this is temporary, please change it Update your particulars and resumes as early as possible. 2) Select companies for practical attachment You can find companies from Jobstreet, Jobsdb, newspapers, etc. The coordinators may have a list of companies actively looking for students. Please refer to your coordinator. Call the company to check for internship availability, and find out who is the contact person in charge (get his/her title/name/ /fax). Then, decide carefully on your company preference (ignore companies that has no openings or opportunity).
8 What Are The Suitable Company s Fields Of Industry? The environment should be engineering, or technical managerial, under the various fields of engineering, e.g. electrical, electronics, computers, telecommunications, etc. The training nature could fall under: a) System analysis, design, development, implementation, installation. b) Technical marketing, documentation, presentation, consultation. c) Planning, scheduling, organization, execution, management. d) Machine operation, troubleshooting, verification, service and repair. e) Learning, discovery, investigation of technical skills and knowledge.
9 3) Send an application to the company You may request a pdf version of your resume from your coordinator. Apply by or fax to get a quick response. A sample letter/ is: [Student name] [Address] [Tel]/[ ] [Date] [Title, Name] [Position] [Company name] [Address] [Tel]/[ ] (For , this part is not necessary) Dear [Title, Name], RE: Application for Industrial Training Attachment I am a year 3 student pursuing the B.Eng. (Hons) Electronic Engineering at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), and wish to apply as a trainee for Industrial Training at your company. Our industrial training period is from 1 Oct to 31 Dec I enclose herewith my resume. I shall be most grateful if my application is considered favourably. Please contact our industrial training programme coordinators Mr. Francis Lau (laukh@utar.edu.my or ) or Mr. Ng Choon Boon (ngcb@utar.edu.my or ) for any inquiry on the training programme. Thank you very much. Yours faithfully, [Student name], [IC]
10 4) Wait for the company s response Once applied, wait for 2 to 3 weeks, then call the company to check on your application status. Only if no hopes, then target another new company. Do not apply to too many companies in one go, because then you would have to reject many possible offers, giving UTAR a bad image. 5) When a company has confirmed your placement Fill in and submit the Letter of Undertaking and Indemnity (from website) to coordinator. Submit company details (company, address, contact person, position, Tel, Fax, , nature of work, site location, availability, allowance) to coordinator. Once you have accepted a company placement, you are not allowed to change without university s approval. Company placement should be obtained before 15 Sept 2012, after which, the university may place you in any company available. 6) Register for the unit and pay fees
11 B Undergo Training 1) Undergo industrial training at the registered company - Be present and punctual at the company - Take part in team works and projects - Willing to take up new challenges (with adequate safety measures) - Demonstrate technical/soft skills - Learn new skills/knowledge (by asking, observing, reading) 2) Keep daily/weekly records of what you do during the training (records must be signed by the industrial supervisor). 3) During your training, an academic supervisor lecturer will be assigned to you (constantly check the website). Please contact him to update regarding your training (e.g. which department you re assigned to, who is your industrial supervisor.)
12 4) The academic supervisor (or another lecturer) may visit you at your company during your training to monitor your training progress. 5) The following will result in heavy penalty or possible failure: - Unapproved change of training company - Absence without notice - Late/no submission of report - Incomplete report or appraisal form - Inappropriate company (unrelated field, or the parent is the supervisor etc.) Applying for leave without valid reasons during training is discouraged.
13 6) SAFETY ISSUES! If you feel you are being exposed to dangerous situations during training: - Reaching high-up places without safety harness - Put in a challenging environment without an experienced supervisor - Poor working conditions, extreme heat, fume, darkness - Under mental stress Please inform the coordinator immediately for advice. But do not abuse this by taking it as an excuse not to perform your duty during training. UTAR insurance does not cover risks in construction sites. Students who are required to enter construction sites need to have a Green Card from CIDB. Students should ensure their employers send them for 1-day course to obtain the Green Card (fee is RM50).
14 C Submit Report And Appraisal Form 1) Towards the end of your training, give the Student Appraisal Form to your industrial supervisor/manager for him/her to evaluate your performance during the training period, and get the completed form back in a sealed envelope. 2) Write up the Report (should follow guidelines and formats available on the website) and submit it together with the Student Appraisal Form to your academic supervisor (check the website for submission due date).
15 D Oral Presentation 1) After completing your training, you are required to prepare and give a short oral presentation on your training experience to your academic supervisor. (The End)
