1 Train the Trainer Programme Strengthening resilience against work Personal resilience training has probably the most immediate and sustained impact on the primary prevention of stress at work. Primary prevention is about preventing stress from occurring in the first place. Resilience is about preventing potentially stressful events causing a stressful reaction in individuals. Resilience focuses on the individual, and strengthening resilience enables the individual to tolerate and cope with adverse events more easily, without reducing performance at work. Strengthening resilience is about strengthening personal psychological immunity against adverse events. Our resilience programme is designed to add to the immunity to stress that individuals have already built up, by providing an insight into how resilience is produced and exercises to strengthen aspects of personal immunity identified from completing The Resilience Assessment Questionnaire. The MAS Resilience train the trainer programme is designed to enable trainers to deliver a resilience programme. The delivery of a strongly psychological programme requires an understanding and fluency in the underlying psychological principles on which the programme is based. Psychological Principles of Resilience Resilience is, essentially, about attitude combined with motivation. Attitudes are constructed from thoughts, emotions and feelings. Strengthening resilience is about making attitudes more robust a will do attitude, as opposed to a can do attitude. It s about regulating thoughts and feelings to arrive at a robust attitude towards a stressful event. The training programme explores, in depth, the many interpretations of resilience and helps the trainers arrive at a definition that they feel comfortable with and can justify to their audience. The programme goes on to discuss the psychological elements of thoughts and feelings, and how these help to form an attitude. Understanding that beliefs can inhibit and strengthen resilience will be part of this discussion, together with why it s important to identify core personal values that drive individuals to take certain decisions P a g e 1

2 Train the Trainer Programme Strengthening resilience against work Programme The programme explores the self, the meaning of events and the possible outcomes from an event. In exploring self, the programme examines the contribution to resilience of human capital, experiences, skills, relationships and the ability to interact with others. In exploring the meaning of events, the programme examines the stages in personal evaluation of events, the meaning of events to the individual and the information we use to help form an attitude towards an event. In exploring the individual outcomes arising from an event, the programme examines the role of key psychological phenomena in the processes of determining the choice of outcome to an event. The remainder of the programme identifies influences on behaviour, and the processes that are effective in helping change behaviour to strengthen personal resilience. The programme goes on to provide exercises that strengthen personal resilience. The exercises address the key influences that strengthen resilience, and add to the armoury of techniques and approaches that individuals can call on in times of challenge. At the conclusion of the programme participants will be given a test to establish their understanding of the programme. Successful completion of this test will enable the participant to deliver the resilience programme under licence. Duration of Train the Trainer programme The Programme takes 3 days, as follows: Day 1 Attendance at one of our Resilience Workshops where our Resilience programme is presented as a whole see page 4 of this document. Dates and Locations and seminars.html Day 2 and Day 3 Detailed training of trainers in the psychological theories and principles underpinning our resilience programme; the detail of the programme; and the assessment of participants. Costs Day 1 Attendance at one of our Strengthening Resilience Workshops. This provides the opportunity to experience our Strengthening Resilience Workshop as a participant. Earlybird Rate VAT Days 2 and 3 Train the Trainer Workshop VAT What is included in the Train the Trainer Workshop: 2 day workshop plus lunch and refreshments. Materials to take away re badgeable workbook, Powerpoints, Resilience Q, access to on line version of RAQ, background papers, videos. Successful completion will lead to the awarding of a licence for 12 months which includes: support for problems and queries which can be sent in by , ability to set up a tel call with an expert if required plus access to forum of other resilience trainers. Opportunities for independent trainers to become an Associate of The Wellbeing and Performance Group and to deliver the resilience training programme on our behalf. Notes: Accommodation and evening meal are not included in these costs but will be available at the venue attendees can either stay there and take advantage of the overnight package for dinner, bed and breakfast or are free to make their own arrangements. On going annual licence. The annual licence is renewable to provide access to new training materials, revised annual programme, support and access to the forum. Accommodation The George Hotel offers a bed and breakfast rate of 90 for bed and breakfast (mention that you are attending the workshop when making your booking to get this rate). 4 Background to MAS Resilience Training: Our Resilience Training Programme was developed originally for Roche and Openwork (part of Zurich). The purpose was to introduce and facilitate the adoption of approaches and techniques to building and sustaining resilience. The programme was initially piloted and delivered to separate groups of managers and staff. At Roche, the programme has subsequently been going for 2 years with the sessions delivered to separate audiences of staff and managers and in 2011, it has been rolled out globally with workshops delivered in San Francisco, New York and Switzerland. Evaluation has consistently been near to 5 on a Likert Scale 1 5. 5 The notes below refer to the outline of our Strengthening Resilience Programme which is the deliverable from our Train the Trainer Programme. The Strengthening resilience against work Programme Organisations and individuals face a number of risks at work that include changes brought about by the economic climate and the ripple effect that has on the workforce, individuals and their families. Building resilience will help ensure that your workforce is motivated, engaged, committed and maintains performance through periods of uncertainty and change. Resilience is about building personal capacity to tolerate excessive stressful events without experiencing symptoms of personal stress. Resilience is a key aspect of Wellbeing and Performance as it focuses on personal prevention techniques, approaches and behaviours, and builds these into a corporate resilient workforce, with the additional benefits of better staff retention, low sickness absence, low presenteeism and low staff turnover rates. Clarify personal vision and goals o Building your strength and determination to succeed in difficult times o How can you best demonstrate your talents, skills, knowledge, experience and personality? o Building the relationships with people who will help you succeed o Developing the capacity to solve problems and rise to challenges o Organisational skills when chaos is all about you and you can t think clearly o Building and demonstrating your personal self confidence Improve coping and manage stress more effectively Enhance physical and mental wellbeing Boost personal control and flexibility Assess and improve behaviours that increase resilience Improve life balance P a g e 5

6 Delivery Styles for Strengthening resilience against work Programme The content for our Strengthening Resilience Programme can be delivered in different formats: an indepth interactive workshop for senior management teams, line managers and staff suitable for a maximum of people, utilising the exercises and Resilience Questionnaire an awareness session for larger groups delivered seminar style less interaction but still using some of the exercises and the resilience questionnaire but without the individual feedback. Ideally, a full workshop should be followed up by a further session to embed the learning and deal with any issues arising. Usually a half day workshop is sufficient. Sometimes work of this nature identifies people in need of individual coaching. Outcome from this programme for the participants: Participants will learn the techniques and approaches to building personal resilience and will build a reservoir of resilience against stressful events. The programme will provide them with exercises and routines that can be adopted on a daily basis. Participants should also gain an insight into helping build resilience in others. 7 The Facilitator for the Train the Trainer Programme Derek Mowbray Derek Mowbray, is a Chartered Psychologist and Chartered Scientist, with a doctorate in leadership. Dr Mowbray focuses on the behaviour of leaders and managers in relation to their employees, and helps them to develop the behaviours that encourage commitment, trust and staff engagement. Derek s techniques include problem focused coaching, cognitive coaching, group work and consultancy. Professor Mowbray combines the unique features of working on the big picture as a strategist as well as facilitating effective leader and manager performance. He is a visiting Professor of Psychology at Northumbria University, and works for the European Commission as an Independent Technical Expert. Derek is a regular contributor to HSJ, HSE, CIPD and LinkedIn communities, and has made national presentations at the International Stress Management Association, NHS Employers Conference, HSJ s World Class Workforce Conference and HSJ s Tackling Staff Sickness and Absenteeism Conference. In 2011, he has been invited to speak at Health and Work at the NEC; SOLACE South East Conference; HPMA Wales Conference; Public Service Management Wales Summer School 2011; RCGP Primary Care Conference and the CIPD Annual HR Conference in November Facilitator for Resilience Workshop Gary Hogman Gary Hogman is an Associate of the. He is focussed on supporting organisations to improve their peoples mental health by building resilience and developing creative people and organisations. Gary is a psychology graduate with 20 years experience working in mental health in the areas of research, policy, communications and campaigns. After three years at the local health authority level he spent 12 years working at the national level in the third sector before joining the National Mental Health Development Unit to run the Department of Health s national programme, Shift for five years. The Shift programme was aimed at tackling the stigma and discrimination that surrounds mental illness. The main audience for the work was employers. Gary worked very closely with Dame Carol Black and her team on the Government s health and employment review of which the Shift Line Manager s Resource and Shift Employment Films constituted a key part of the Government s response. Gary has worked with a wide variety of individuals and organisations including Government departments, national charities, professional bodies, research institutions, media organisations and national businesses. Gary also takes a keen interest in digital communications with a competent working knowledge of audio visual hardware and software P a g e 7
